No reason he couldn't come in for an inning today. It's not against the rules to throw him on back to back days.
With the number of pitches he threw yesterday, it’s not wise to do that much on back-to-back days. Can you? Of course you can. But we are playing the long game. We are cruising to a national seed. So why risk wearing down your staff now? And Lemonis will have a lot of credibility recruiting pitchers that he is going to take care of and protect elite arms. The data will back him up unlike many in our conference. We aren’t chasing an SEC Regular Season championship. We are chasing Omaha and the big one. Lemonis is managing our staff exactly right. If we need Sims for 35 pitches a night on back to back days come June, you can rest assured you will get them. Just relax.
I think you are right but I wonder about two things. Could we get another inning yesterday before going to Sims. If so back to back may have been possible. Also, if Foxhall is not ejected (still weird), does he suggest doing anything different in 9th. I am not sure. Real problem today was not getting more runs early in ballgame. One was a bad call but got to score more with bases loaded.
There is a very intentional strategy with Sims. We are simply not going to throw him on back to back games in the regular season unless our postseason life depended on it. Just like you aren’t going to see 110 pitches from Bednar regardless of circumstance right now. You want your premier elite arms to be 100% rested and healthy come June. And come June, the kid gloves will come off to a certain extent. You’ll never see us pull a Skip Bertman/Lane Mestepey deal where you’ll throw a guy 300+ pitches over 8 days. But we will increase all their workloads as needed.
And I always love to bring up how Skip Bertman criminally abused Lane Mestepey’s elite arm. They should’ve passed laws to criminalize what he did to that poor freshman. If winning a national title required that kind of abuse, I never would want to win one. I think it was something along the lines of 125 pitches on a Friday, 90 pitches on Sunday, and then another 110 pitches on the following Friday or Saturday, depending on when the Super started. He never was the same again. It was so absurd.
153 pitches in a day after throwing over 200 pitches the prior weekend!! You can’t even credibly remember how bad it was because it’s that unbelievable.

Lemonis made the right call. One game isn't the season. I'm all for not babying pitchers. But the announcers said Sims availability today would depend on how he felt. And you don't bring in your closer after 30 pitches less than 24 hours later unless he's 100% ready. Obviously, he wasn't. Frustrating game to lose, but you don't risk it for a regular season game.
We were also victims of our own success a bit. We got out to such big leads in the first two games that USCe didn’t bother throwing their best bullpen arms, so they had their best stuff saved for today and we still almost beat them.
If today were game 3 of a Super Regional, Sims would have pitched.

Yeah, an SEC championship and 1 seed is better than a 3rd/4th place finish and tougher road. I never expect us to try to win big. This is why. We can screw around and rest everybody in the SEC tournament if we win the regular season and are a one seed.
We had the lead going into the 9th so all we really needed from Sims would have been 1 inning. I don't really understand why he couldn't come out for 1 inning today knowing that he wouldn't pitch again until Thursday AND there is a decent chance that he will not even be needed against Missouri at all, they are really bad. Also, if we are being that careful with arms then Lemonis should not have brought Sims into the game yesterday in the 8th with a 3 run lead unless SC got the tying run to the plate.
If we would have got some hits with runners in scoring position we would have swept regardless.... we didn’t lose today because of pitching
If you are a national seed, whether or not you get a "tougher road" is strictly luck of the draw. You think you get an easy road with a 2-seeded Arizona team coming to your super regional in 2016, and they turn out to be the team that plays in the CWS Finals. There is zero evidence that being the top overall seed gives you ANY kind of advantage to winning a national championship beyond the inherent advantage you have in having a roster of really good baseball players. I'll take a #7 national seed and a healthy and rested roster over the #1 national seed and a roster you really pushed to the endurance limit every time. We are going to be very well-positioned going into the postseason this year.
Keep fighting the good fight dude. There are so many people that are flat clueless on this topic. Those MLB pitch count rules are there for a reason, put together with years of research. Over 30 pitches you take a day off, especially during the regular season. Lemonis, thankfully, is well-versed in this.
We pitched Sims in Game 2 because it was getting dicey, and we wanted to assure that we won the series. If you save him for Game 3, there is no guarantee that Game 3 is competitive enough for Sims to be the difference. Our strategy with Sims in the regular season is this. At any point late in the game you can use him in a game you are ahead or tied, and he pretty much guarantees you a win. If that happens to be on Friday, then you get the option for him again on Sunday if his pitch-count was reasonable on Friday AND the situation warrants using him. But we simply are NOT going to use him on back-to-back days in the regular season right now unless we viewed the game as THAT SUPREMELY CRITICAL to our postseason success. Today versus South Carolina was definitely not that. We aren't going to over-extend and wear out our staff prior to the postseason.....not even for an SEC Championship. In baseball, this is the right decision. We've won the SEC plenty of times enough. I want the big one. This gives us the best chance at that. I don't think you realize how someone like Lemonis can use decisions like this to win some big-time recruiting battles for premium arms in the recruiting cycles to come. The long game isn't even about this year, although i think it helps maximize our chances this year too, but it's also about the future of the program.
Yep, pretty simple. If the SEC title is important to you then Sims should have pitched the 9th today. If the SEC title is not important to you, then Sims should not have pitched. He won't pitch again until the earliest Thursday night anyway and, as I said, may not even be needed at all against Missouri because they are the weakest team in the SEC. We had a chance to stay with the SEC leaders today, and for that reason I would have pitched him one inning in the 9th to try and get the sweep. I don't think one inning today would have been detrimental to any post-season chances but Lemonis has shown that he is going to be ultra conservative with pitchers. And I'm not sure that is limited to just the regular season. I'm not convinced Lemonis would pitch Sims on back to back days in a Super or a CWS either.
This is the right answer. If this is game 3 of a super or the CWS, you definitely send him back out today. No need to do that today. The win would have been nice but not worth pushing a pitcher in a way he’s has not been pushed.

This is smart coaching. Not only do you protect your best arms you give the rest some time to develop. We learned A LOT about our closers today and what they need to work on before conference and national tourney time. I hate to lose like that but we were do and that closer for them was throwing BBs.
We have got to find a way to use Cumbest and Skinner at LF or find someone else that can fill that spot in the lineup.
1. We would love to win the SEC. But we aren’t going to alter our pitching plans and preferred pitch count limits to win it.
2. Lemonis will absolutely pitch Sims on back to back days come the postseason if the situation dictates it unless there is some other factor beyond simply pitch count preferences that would keep him from being able to do that.
