Our best guy’s demeanor on defense sometimes reminds me of how Fran used to coach last year with his hands in his pockets. 😊 Tonight, on offense, he was double teamed the whole game. Other teams are going to do the same to him. Ben Mc needs to figure out ways to take advantage of the defensive gaps double teaming him creates. The poor kid can’t just run around trying to get free. Even the tv announcers made a comment about it. And regarding IA St, either they are not good enough to be number 4, or we are way better than people think. I also think both of those cases may be true. :)

Someone else is going to need to emerge as a primary scorer to take the pressure off Stirtz but I'm not sure they have it. They're doing it by committee right now which is great, but man I wish this team had a Jok, Uthoff, or Weiskamp type player. I think Koch and Folgueras can get there, but probably a year or two out.
The last 3 games Howard has shot well from 3 and been effective at taking the ball to the rim. Whoever took the backcut pass and dunked w/ authority at the end of ISUs run to start the 2nd half. Banks competed and contributed more tonight vs a top opponent than I've seen him do all season.

And the start of the 2nd half when we were gettin' it handed to us and we had no answer and didn't really put up much of a fight.
That's because we don't have any reliable go-to scorers other than Stirtz, and he's not quick enough to get his own shot either against above average defenders.

Stirtz doesn't appear to be a guy who is going to force anything, but he's a pretty heady player and he should be taking it to the basket more and drawing fouls. He's good enough to do that IMO.

Really think Iowa wins that game anywhere but Hilton. The difference in foul calls wasn't a suprise on the road but was upset with giving Buchanan timeout when he didn't have possession and then looked like Jefferson kicked ball out on same possession. Played tough, made some mistakes which is expected against that caliber of defense but I'm really excited for rest of season.

Yeah, that big run took the starch out of their socks.
All really good teams have a way to stop a run by answering w/ points of their own or needing a score late in the game.

Find a weak defender or a mismatch, post up, show the ball and attack the rim. Get fouled, score a couple points when needed. We just cranked a couple 3's tonight and the wbb puts up 3's in desperation also. (like last nite vs ISU w/ Deal and Stremlow on the bench)

Agree, a little of both. However when ISU wanted to take the game over (start of 2nd 1/2) they did. They hustled, defended, rebounded and were focused. When they didn't contest shots, stood and didn't block out we played w/ them and were able to build a lead or make a run.
ISU has better players at most of the positions and Stirtz (Love him for who he is and what he does, but he's not a lottery pick)

The team is getting better and more confident. Stirtz is getting mugged so other guys have stepped up and did so against ISU. Objectively, ISU is far more talented and better, but it was largely the rest of the team: Sage, Howard, Cam, Banks, and Combs who kept them in it. That bodes well moving forward.

Your guy got worn down by a superior defender. He did nothing at the basket. He hit 3 shots from way outside, which most teams will give him.
You 'shut down' Iowa's best player, but only won by 4pts; at home. This after going on the road and kicking the former #1 team's azz.

.... congrats?

Not sure where the "GOTCHA!" here is that you're trying to point out. If anything, it makes your win look even less impressive than it already was.

Fully expected a letdown after spanking the best team in the B10 at their crib. Clones got the dub in spite of all the tackling the hawks did in the paint.

Will also be the last. We've done the same thing many times I'm sure.

Last time we won all 4 was in 2019. No idea how many times we have won all 4, I know in the 80’s, if we won the MBB game, we won the other 3.

This is the pinnacle of ISU athletics. With MC leaving, and OTZ in line for the next big opening (Kentucky), I’m sure the tide will turn back soon.

Tough loss to take.. Iowa had their chances. One bad stretch late in the first and first part of the 2nd half cost them, but the team showed a lot of toughness fighting right back after getting down 10 on the road, against #4.

Not a moral victory guy, but it's hard to come away from this one feeling down on this team.. Even if the outcome stung bit. The close ones are the toughest to swallow.

Hmmm.

Yeah, I see what you mean. That 17-23 (ISU) vs 3-5 (Iowa) FTM/FTA disparity really reflects that Iowa got away with "all that tackling in the paint".

Nobody said they got away with it. They rarely moved their feet to get in good guarding position and the result was a trip to the FT line. But tackling can take a toll on the offensive player, but fortunately the Clones played through it.

Coach just took the number 4 team in the country, on the road, against a tough whistle, to the finish with an MVC roster.

Hit the recruiting trail, get some B1G athletes and the future looks bright.
Iowa State just took the no. 1 team in the country and beat them handily.

Right there with ya. Im beyond pissed. We got jobbed big time. Then you’ve got dipshit clown fans texting rubbing it in. 1 had the audacity to say they quit playing aggressive defense the last 12 minutes and that’s why we didn’t shoot any ft’s after hitting the bonus 😂

Turnovers really hurt, Stirtz needs a break as I don't seem him playing 40 mintutes a game with intense ,physical BIG schedule. Wish Koch would have got some minutes the second half.

Maybe we shouldn’t foul so much

just an idea
We did foul them more, but not by that much. I mentioned this in the game thread, but at least 3 of Josh Jefferson's drives were him being a bulldozer against a legal Iowa contest. 5 pts. We also tied up Lipsey on a clean reach in, he fell to the ground and travelled. 2 more pts.

Now add up all the and1's the Iowa should've gotten. We had a dunk where their defender was late on the contest and hit the dunker pretty hard in midair, no call. That was typical on the night, Iowa should've had a few more and1s besides that most obvious one.

Or, maybe, the GD refs should call the same game on both ends. Just an idea.

A few examples: Stirtz was body checked, body checked, and then body checked flat onto his back. An official is a few feet away. Two other officials are on the scene. Nobody blows a freakin' whistle.

An Iowa player is in perfect defensive position, squared up on the ISU dribbler in front of the Iowa bench. The ISU dribbler blasts through the Iowa defender, an obvious and egregious offensive foul . . . but the ref calls blocking.

Jefferson is driving the left side of the lane, goes outta control, fires up a wild shot off the board, comes down on top of an Iowa player who had been standing along the edge of the lane and baseline waiting for a bus and, yup, another blocking call.

ISU drives and misses layups, a foul is usually called, yet replays show there was no foul. At the other end Iowa drives and misses layups, replays show plenty of contact but, of course, no fouls are called.

And, finally, ISU commits its 7th foul with 10:20 left in the game. I tell my buddy, "Watch, ISU won't get another foul called on them the rest of the game." But man was I wrong. The refs did call ONE more foul on ISU near the end to give them ONE foul in that final 10:20 after being called for 7 in the first 9:40. What changed? LOL

There are many, many other examples, but the point has been made. No objective observer could claim Iowa got a fair shake in Ames last night or in East Lansing ever or in Iowa City either. Look at that Maryland game . . . It's bullshitt, and Ben needs to get a T or two. If Iowa ever got just an even break from the whistlers, they'd be damn difficult to beat at basketball.

This is the first time ISU has beaten Iowa in FB, wrestling, WBB, and MBB in the same season.
And look how it happened: Deflected pass in football, screwed by the refs in a 5-point women's B-ball loss, and screwed by the refs in a 4-point men's basketball loss. Well done, Cy. See ya in Iowa City next time around. Let's see how that goes.
