That is a fireable coaching decision

There have been a lot of bad halves and full games of football under Kirk, this first half is up there with the worst of them. We looked so bad in 2 facets of the game and mediocre on defense. The first TD for PSU was atrocious defense and lack of tackling.

I think Kirk finally started listening to all the idiots on this board who think we should always go for it on 4th down. Try long FG’s, what could possibly go wrong?

That’s what could go wrong.

So now, are we going to stop giving them points and play Hawkeye Football in the second half?

The absolute worst coaching decision I’ve ever seen.

completely unforgivable. Just mind boggling.

Overreact much?

It's easy to criticize the FG attempt decision AFTER THE FACT but Drew has shown to be good from at least 65 yards, as shown in what follows.

LeVar Woods, Drew's position coach, obviously signed off on the attempt. And then Kirk signed off on it, too.

Some context & facts, from this season:

17-21 is 81%.

From Aug 30 (GOOD from 65 PLUS):

From Sep 6:

From Sep 13:

This FG, too, would have been good from 65 yards.

Stop it. He was 7-8 yards short on the 1st one.

it’s inexcusable, Mary.

You can point to many mistakes.

Here's just 2 of them:

(1) How about our WR catch the damn ball? On Iowa's opening drive, the ball went off Jacob Gill’s chest, went up in the air and was intercepted.

(2) A huge mistake by the D then cost us 7 points.

On Penn State's next drive, the Iowa D held Penn State on 4th & 1, but an offsides penalty gave them another shot and they cashed it in for a TD. Instead of a 0-0 ball game, Iowa trailed 7-0 with 8:45 remaining in the first quarter.

Stop, he let up at the end and clearly didn't go through with a full strength kick.
Chrissakes.

Do it again next time.
The threat of a blocked kick returned for a TD should not a factor any more than normal.
Sure, the kick is gonna be lower, but that ain't a TD return 99/100 times.

IowaCityLit does a good job of hitting your list. That first PSU drive and the blocked FG were certainly maddening, but beyond that I can't complain about this game.

What do you have?

Don't attempt to get 3 very valuable points on account of a very low risk fluke block to TD?

How many 50+ yd FG attempts are blocked for TD returns / not TDs
How many 60+ yd FG are blocked for TD returns / not TDs?

Our WRs still struggle catching the ball.

The blocked FG & return for a TD sucked, no doubt.

But:

(1) I can see why they tried it, based on Drew being good from 65 plus throughout the season.

(2) I can see why they'll never try it again (unless they are up 30 or more late in the 4th qtr).

We win by double digits if we don’t try it. Funny enough fg try should’ve never happened if psu made smart decision to almost run clock out or rb doesn’t run OB. Difference is he’s an interim and KF 27 yr vet. Luckily gronowski and D bailed him out with help of that awful 4th and 1 attempt by psu.

Yeah, after KF’s poor decision, PSU’s coach says hold my beer by going for it on 4th down on their own 40.

We win by double digits if our DL was not offsides

So, that means fire Phil?

Which decision, the 66 yard FG try? we have seen Drew knock 55 yarders thru the upright that hit 20 feet up the net. He has the leg.

The chances of a block are pretty low

What bothers me is that every PAT and FG kick we tried had a lot of penetration right up the middle. We might want to put our whole offensive line in there minus the center to keep the penetration down.

If you rewatch those kicks they could have all been blocked. I hope the special teams works hard on that because it is on tape now.

Comparing kicking a 55yd against UMass and attempting a 66yd field goal against PSU is beyond laughable.

The chances of the 66 yder getting blocked are extremely high because you're kicking for distance and you can't afford elevation.

It was an absolute asinine decision...every day of the week, unless it's the end of the game.
