I think it's very telling Hayes discouraged Herro from attending Wisconsin. Makes me think something is amiss within that program. It could just be that Bo Ryan was gone and Hayes knew it just wasn't the same. Ryan was a very good coach and Wisconsin may never reach his level of success again.

Having said all this, I have a feeling that Herro would have eventually come to the same conclusion, leaving the Badgers for the Bluegrass. He committed to Wisconsin before his game really took off. At the time, it was probably a dream to play for the home state team. But once it became clear to all that he was an NBA talent, he knew his path needed to be different. It made sense. It was similar to when Malik Monk left Arkansas. I'm sure there are multiple players UK has had under Calipari who fit this same description, a home state kid who ended up committing to UK because they knew Cal could get them where they needed to go. I know this infuriates the home state fans, but the track record proves it's true, and there is no denying it worked in Herro's case.

If Hayes did recommend this, and I have my doubts, it was 2 years after Bo Ryan retired. It was also after Hayes had finished playing for Wisconsin. So I'm not sure if there was something amiss. Toward the end of Hayes college career he became very vocal for player's NIL rights. It's possible this got him in hot water with coaches, admins, fans, etc. More likely I think he just started looking at college sports more cynically, and advised Herro to look out for his own self interest. Again, I'm doubtful Hayes ever said this.... perhaps it is true, I don't know. As you said, Herro is a very confident individual and knew he needed to play with the best to become the best. He would have found his way here on his own.

When I read this all I could think was "Imagine if Wenyen Gabriel actually convinced Herro not to come here" and how crazy this board would have went.. and rightfully so.. if I'm a Wisconsin fan, you have to think of disowning Nigel for this. Glad it worked for Kentucky, and Herro.. but man, what a dick punch from Hayes..

This is the attitude of every major D1 fanbase. They don't need any proof of the accusations to state it as fact, either. I get it though, Calipari isn't everyone's cup of tea. He's got that swag that rubs people the wrong way, though they know they'd love to have him as their next coach if the situation worked out. (but they'll never admit it) UK fans were the same way about Cal when he was at UMass and Memphis. With some exceptions, most of our fanbase disliked him and said we'd never want him as our coach. That was part of the reason we ended up with Billy G, which was a disaster. Once that debacle was over, we wised up a bit. People will always bring up Cal's past, though they have ZERO understanding of the situations involved. Oh well.

Nigel Hays understood what Wisconsin basketball is, and he understood Herro's talent, and that's why he pointed him away from Madison. I'm sure Wisconsin fans hate Hays, Herro, UK, and Calipari for this, but they can't deny that it worked out well for Herro and it was obviously a good decision.
