I was given a pellet grill/smoker for Father's Day and used it for the first time on Sunday. What started as as trial run on a couple racks of ribs turned into more family a d more food. So ended up with 3 racks of st louis ribs, one pork loin, some sausage, and 5 chicken thighs. Turned out pretty well for a first time pellet smoking thanks to some tips I read on here and elsewhere.

I went from a stick burner to BGE to a Traeger. IMO, your product ends up being better because its so easy to be consistent. Not to mention, the added wifi doesn't keep you tied down all day (and night) when you are smoking.

I still use a stick burner for pork butts but practically everything else goes in the Traeger. I even use the Traeger to finish steaks after I sear them. Keeps from heating and smoking up the kitchen.

Yeah I never got the pellet hate. I guess some would rather rub 2 sticks together and cook their food over hickory chunks that they cut themselves controlling temperature by blowing on the fire and moving the food closer and further away from the fire.

Not a pellet, but I’ve been wanting to get a Masterbuilt Gravity Series Grill. Basically the charcoal equivalent to a pellet grill.

Have you checked out the Char-Griller Gravity smoker? Also seems like a good choice. I'm kinda leaning that way.

Just because you never learned to use a stick burner doesn't mean everyone's as inept at it as you apparently are

Had my first experience with one this weekend at a Buddy’s house. He bought it last week. I started out impressed. But It flamed like a mofo. We had HELL keeping the flames down. Turned the temp all the way down and it was still in Flames. . Once the flames died down, we turned it back up to 350 but the temp never got above 238 degrees after that. Seemed way hotter in the center of the grill than it did on the sides. We ended up moving chicken around to different places on the grill to cook it. End result - some chicken was burned. Other pieces undercooked. Not sure where we went wrong but I left unimpressed. For the record it was a $700
Oklahoma Joe brand. Nice grill that looked like it was worth the money and had impressive features but they didn’t cook worth a damn

Problem with getting one has been “dad can you smoke salmon for us, dad can you cook ribs, dad can you make us a pizza?? etc”. Pellets have went up too but I’d be in the doghouse if I got rid of it.

I’ve got the smaller traeger but I stole two cake cooling racks (fold out legs) and can get 2 ribs on the bottom and 2 ribs on the racks, that’s come in handy.

Not inept at all. I used stick burners. I like using my Rec Tec now and don’t degrade people that use BGE or Electric or water or whatever. It’s whatever you want to do.

That’s odd. Mine has never flared up. One time when I didn’t clean it forever it would go 30 degrees hotter than I had it set for a few minutes but it always corrects itself. It did this 2 or 3 times during a 14 hour cook that I noticed. The butt came out fine and I cleaned it up and it never has had
that problem since.

My Primo (Kamado style) with a wifi fan on it is the best of both worlds to me. It might not be quite as easy as a pellet smoker, but it isn't much more trouble since I can set the temp with my phone or the control box. If you have a Kamado, definitely get a wifi controller/fan for it.

I've used regular propane grills my whole life (usu. Webers) and have always been really happy w/ them, but I've toyed w/ getting some kind of a smoker, too. Got a pellet grill for Christmas and it's become one of my favorite material possessions. Has all the convenience of propane - if I just want to do some burgers I go set it on 400, go inside and make the burgers out, come back out and it's ready. Then on the 4th I used it like a smoker and did two whole chickens all afternoon. Either way, the burgers, steaks and chicken I've done are consistently tender and juicy. It's amazing.

Have never had any flare-up issues unless I've let it get really dirty, and even then I could get through whatever I was grilling.

I use a Kamado Joe for all my bbq needs. Lump charcoal and wood chunks (usually hickory) gets the job done. Holds temp for hours. I have never used a pellet grill, but to each his own.

People don’t understand until they get a Traeger. You will never go back. Or you can keep texting on your QWERTY keyboard flip phone!

I bought a 36” coyote pellet smoker for my back porch kitchen. I will never cook on my green egg again. Plus it looks great
