You have to think there's something else going on here. My first instinct is his winkie had some fun, but who knows.

If Leach doesn’t have 4 wins before the Bama game next year, the same thing is going to happen to him.

The Athletic has a good article about it.

The TLDR:

There’s the basic wins-and-losses answer. Texas Tech lost 17 of its 24 games against Power 5 foes under Wells. After consecutive four-win seasons, Hocutt needed to see progress from a senior-heavy squad and didn’t see enough. It’s clear now that six or seven wins wouldn’t have saved Wells. Hocutt determined a firing was “inevitable.” So Tech leadership chose not to delay, preferring a five-week head start to the coaching search.

Some of those “in the know” at Ole Miss are saying that Lebby is a very real option at Texas Tech. He comes from the Briles coaching tree, without the last name or baggage. He started his career as a high school coach in Texas, and has deep ties there. And obviously he’s had a really explosive offense at Ole Miss and completely saved Matt Corral’s career.

I know Kiffin gets most of the recognition for our offensive success. And I get it, he’s the HC with an offensive background. I’m sure he’s had a big hand in it. He sees the game better than most, and I’m sure he’s “nudged” Lebby towards certain play calls, etc. But make no mistake, this is Jeff Lebby’s offense. And he’s the one calling plays. He was a dynamic hire by Kiffin and he’s been even better than expected. Kiffin apparently learned some things from Saban because he’s actually hired an OC and let them do their job. Not sure he’d have done that 7-8 years ago.

We are likely losing Lebby after this season, regardless. So I’d love to see him get that TT job. I think he’d kill it there. But it will be a big loss, no matter how we try to spin it in Oxford.
