With the connections we have in that state on staff between Leach, Jason Washington, McBath, etc. we need to be recruiting in Texas like crazy right now. We were never going to beat out Texas or OU for the blue chip types, but we compete with TCU, Baylor, and Oklahoma State for the next best guys.

The Big12 is dead and those schools have no clue what is next. OU, UT, A&M, and the other blue bloods will duke it out for the top 40 or so players and then go to other states for the rest of their classes, but there are a lot of good prospects from Texas in the 40-60 range. We are part of the undisputed best league in America. Texas and OU joining the SEC raises our profile in Texas big time and cuts down on the competition in that state, IMO.

There are tons of players who already play a offense similar what we run or at least we would be able to see if they have the skills necessary to run Coach Leech's offense. Better hunt someplace else if you're looking for defensive players unless it's defensive backs. I've been here since 2007 and high school teams in all levels just score more and more every year.

Texas is SEC country now… and with Leach’s history in Texas, I like our chances to increase our pipeline there.

Great take here and I agree completely. The only thing I’d add is that if you consider the transfer portal combined with the OU/Texas move to SEC, you can easily imagine State having more access to very good four star athletes who may not be happy with where they are slotted and who with today’s free agency can just move to another SEC school (like State) and enjoy the visibility and benefits of playing for another SEC team. Leach made a good living with such players when The Big 12 South was very good in the early 2000s— got Tech in the top ten for awhile and it wasn’t a quirk.

I feel fairly certain this group is already working Texas where they can. As you know, lately we have got a few recruits from Texas and really other states that Dan did not seem to scout.

They are unlike previous staffs but they have more areas here that will open up especially here in Austin which has several 5A and 6A programs that are really good,

I really like the fact that this group has grabbed a few Florida players and Texas players and don't seem scared to go to other states. Of course I love the home grown players but I prefer going after the best ones you can get regardless of where they are.

When it comes to QB and WR, sure. But there's nothing inherently better about the athletes in TX, except they are generally coached better and therefore closer to peaking out.

It's an urban legend that TX has some different brand of athlete. Per capita, we out-do them in MS and the surrounding areas. That's why Jimbo has left TX to bring in some higher quality DL.

No one is suggesting that Texas produces better players pound for pound than MS, especially defensively, so you are making a straw man argument.

There are over 2.5 times as many people in Texas as there are in MS, Louisiana, and Alabama combined. Even if the HS talent in Texas produced only half the SEC caliber players per capita, there would still be more in that one state every year than in our entire traditional footprint.

Combine that with about half of the existing local P5 schools taking major hits, and there are a ton of quality players who used to go to OSU, Baylor, TCU, or TTU that we now have access to. Those schools were always our competition for players anyway- not UT or OU.

Texas HS football at most large 6A schools does not appear as physical in the trenches to me as most MS/AL large schools. Not a lot of pads popping. Most of the schools in our district run some type of spread offense with the QB always in the shotgun. As someone mentioned, there are a lot of good QB's and WR's, and I'm sure just because of the numbers of people playing there are a lot of D1 good players, but pretty boring where we live. I say that as a father of a son that just played 4 years.

One of the old FOX Pacific stations on the old sports pack on DTV carried a live game from SOCAL every Friday Night. Because of the time difference I'd usually be getting in from my game by the half or so out there. I watched it a lot. The Trinity League is mostly big private religious based schools. Public and Private play in the same association though. The schools in the Trinity League are always some of the best out there. Take a look at the list of ex players here.....
