Do you really think, if this panic continues, that anyone will have any money to spend on sports, 200$ shoes, and merch? If this country is shut down to the point that we don't have college football or basketball next school year, there won't be enough money to support the pro leagues either. You insinuated they are connected by saying if there’s no college sports means no pro sports.

I also think you are being a bit misguided or short sighted by not realizing the revenue opportunities for professional sports with TV revenues alone. No matter what until there is a vaccine no venue is going to have much turn out. Would benefit pro sports to get out of the big stadiums and into smaller venues with less overhead and bank based on TV revenues. Pro leagues can change up their model to fit an economic downturn. It’s been done many times before.

Ummm they can’t do that. If he goes G League he has to spend the whole year in it and then get drafted in the draft. That’s how the high school to G league system works.

He can't get "called up in 10 days." The one and done rule still applies, he won't be eligible to play in the NBA until the succeeding season after going through the 2021 Draft.

But he can spend all of next season in the G-League instead of at UK.

People are freaking out way more on RR then HOB . It pays to pay for HOB IMO . Could this happen? unlikely but if you read this RR thread you would think it was. There isn't a single person I trust who thinks it is . Just that is is a possibility but as everyone in the know as said it makes zero $$$ logic as he is taking 200-500 k where if he comes here he will get 5-10 million in 14 months. No kid who is a top 15-20 recruit should be that dumb. Now if you want to do what kids like the Green and the kid who was committed to Michigan did that is different . Going making some better money overseas for a year and improve your hype is different . They will make a lot more money and live a better life . Life in the G league sucks .


With that being said if it did happen we go from being a top 5 team to barely a top 20 team. I mean Cal could find a replacement and get us back to a top 10-15ish team but with Boston and Clarke ( given we add Haarms) I fully expect to make a final 4 next season as we haven't had a duo like that since AD and MKG . So even though this is unlikely I will sleep less well tonight for sure.

From what I can tell, there's no guarantee on that yet. The assumption is yes, but the NBA just recently guaranteed their most immediate game checks to players.

If we don't finish the current season and things are still on hold in the fall, there's a very real scenario where those guys don't see a check.

But even if that transpires, it likely means no college season either. In which case you're still much better off because a projected top 10 pick is going to be able to get plenty of money fronted from their agent.

G League can offer players coming out of high school a select contract which is 125k for the 5 month season. That player can choose any G League team he wants (assuming they want him and offer him the contract). He can't be called up or have practices with the NBA affiliate of that G team. Once that season is finished, he will be viewed just like any other prospect entering the draft, any team can select him.

Also Bazley didnt end up playing in the G League. He did an intern at Puma or New Balance or something like that. I forgot the name of the player, but a high school player that was ranked like 25th or somewhere around there went straight to the G League back in like 2010. He ended up getting drafted by a different team than he played for in the G League.

This is clearly fixable. Just know you aren't going to get elite talent and have CBB adopt the MLB rule of 3 years. Just effin do it and get it over with that is the future.

Last year or the year before the nba allowed the G league to pay players direct from high school up to 125K. This rule isn’t new but the economic circumstances have changed immensely in the last month. I never thought Todd was headed over seas felt like he was g league bound all the way. No way is it going to be easy to just move over seas in the next year. I wouldn’t be surprised if the G league sees a mass influx of college freshman this year. This moment has been inevitable. You continue to live and die by the OAD and sooner or later it was going to burn you big time.

Sure, but there still isn't anywhere TO go to for those lower recruits. Some other league or expansion would need to happen. I guess greater emphasis on euro leagues?

But the minutes we allow kids to go right out of HS, I think the college game will create a bit of a buffer as a result. Yes, we won't have the superstars, some could argue the game will be watered down in some way.

But guys like Juzang, and Matthews, and Lee, and Green.. they all left because of higher recruits coming in that were better. You won't see the transfers and there just won't be enough professional spots for these lower recruits.

IMO anyways.

if this new transfer rule gets voted on you are going to see many many more transfers
it will be free agency

then that player will spend one year at a blueblood and go pro

The other issue is with a top recruit a guy projected as a top 10 pick in 2021 that player can also make a ton of extra money from an agent or from endorsements on top of the 125K. The only thing keeping the g league from taking the top tier college talent is coaching. Are you gonna learn and be better leveraged by taking up front money and playing for a second rate coach or taking the best coach and learning the game and how to handle life?

Endorsement $ is key because once you turn Pro, you get taxed and what athletes never understand is you get taxed in each state you play in. Rather make that college tax free $ which is what G-League has been up against. IRS can't tax what they don't know about. lol

one thing nobody is mentioning is the extra money a top recruit will get by building his brand at a school like UK
500k seems like a lot of money until you see the huge figures players get from endorsements

I mean anyone following recruiting knew there was always a ton of talk about Isiah Todd going overseas. He never even signed with UM so I knew he was gone. Suggs and Green were 2 that were constantly talked about as overseas options. I assumed that is why we never really went after Suggs and dropped out of the Green race. The ones going PRO were always talked about as doing so. Now if Clarke does that it would be a different story. He reclassed as is and I can't imagine him skipping Uk with all the hype he has done about it.

The NBA is helping to ruin college BB. The NCAA is doing a good enough job themselves without any help. I think the NBA will look back in 10 years and realize by ruining college BB they watered down their own league. They just aren't looking at the long play, just the short one. The greats in the NBA that spent 3-4 years in college will start to fade. Sure, there will always be some crazy amazing kids, but you are starting to see it now compared to the greats that played college BB 20+ years ago. In my opinion, the NBA is becoming a weaker and weaker version of itself.

I think a year of college is worth way more than a year of G-league for developing a fan base, exposure, starting to build their brand. It is hard to put a dollar figure on that because it pays back over time in endorsements and such. If the G-league can start offering some of these top guys more serious money such as $500k then watch out. It would be very hard not to take $500k in hand.

For all we know, Clarke and his camp might just be exploring it. Really doesn't seem like the G-league is a smart move, not only for money, but the chance at exposing a player. The G-League will KILL some player's careers that would otherwise be fine with a year or two in college.

Overseas? Maybe. Seems kind of late to be deciding this, for a kid who never had any inclination of doing so (unlike Green and Todd)

For teams like Kansas, UK and Duke it will be tough to recruit a kid, get a commitment and then lose them at last minute with nobody left to replace them. Their only hope is to cherry pick kids from other teams with the grad transfer or possible new one time transfer rules.

These G league deals aren’t being offered to everyone. We are talking a handful or two of the cream of the crop high school players. So even if it becomes the norm you will only be losing 4-5 top 10 recruits. Not the entire top 40.

and ironically it is dragging down the NBA too because they are loading up with too many young and unproven talents that either never pan out or it takes them 2-3 years to make an impact because of inexperience. Are their some that do make an immediate impact? Sure but it is only kids who would be elite NBA guys regardless of straight from high school or one year of college like Durant, Davis, Townes, etc.
