I know there is a some type of rule preventing you from being on the practice squad once you have played a certain number of NFL seasons. He was not playing on the practice squad anyway. Lets be real.

There are 16 practice squad guys. There is no limit (up to 16 obviously) of how many of those guys can be 2 years in the league or less.
Each team can have up to 6 guys on the practice squad with more than 2 years in the league.

He picked a strange time to decide to try tight end. They tried to get him to play another position and he refused, only to wait till he's 34 and been out of the game for 9 years to say OK, I'll give it a try. This had zero chance of working out and why would you waste time trying to teach a 34-year old player how to play the position on the practice squad?

Holy Moly was it ugly. Makes sense though. QBs don't get much blocking practice. It is pretty important for a tight end though.

The one clip that went viral wasn't as bad as it looked. He tried to block his man to the inside, but his man went even further inside so he fell down. The next play was the really bad one. He got beat badly pass blocking. But yeah, when you've never blocked before in your life, trying to learn in the NFL probably isn't going to work. Certainly not if you're 34 and not 24.
