Tearing down the goal posts

Back in the day winning was the norm for Nebraska. I am not sure if we have ever brought them down, not that I can remember. I am guessing we never had an upset big enough. We were always the ones on top. Now that times have changed, could it/ should it happen here? Or are we too classy here?

First, I'm not sure that is even done anymore. The last I could find that it was done was in 2014 when Ole Miss beat Bama.
Second does Nebraska deserve a good tear down if we can pull off an upset over someone? A way to symbolize destroying the old way and bringing the new. Or I guess re bringing in the old way.
Third, if yes, what game would it take us winning to justify doing it? I could see it if we could beat Ohio St. Maybe Wisc, they have been the monkey on our back since joining the BIG10.

We had a pretty good win against Mich St a few years back and tear down did not occur.

I can't say that it was the last time but the goalposts in Memorial Stadium were torn down when we beat Oklahoma in 1978. It was Osborne's first victory over Oklahoma after (I believe) six losses. I was there, watching from the south stands.

Regarding tearing down goal posts this year, maybe beating Ohio State would be good enough but that game isn't in Lincoln.

Schools like Iowa State celebrate every first down and tear down goal posts after beating lower tier teams. Nebraska doesn't do that. I understand that we are not beating even the lower tier teams right now, but when we do, that will be a good thing but it will only be the first step along the path to beating Ohio State caliber teams.

They came down after beating OU a few times in the early 90's. I believe they came down after beating CU Frazier's freshman year and the very next week they against KU. Problem was they greased them up against KU and everyone just fell off. Lol. That's the last times I remember.

I have been wracking my brain. IknoI they came down against cu and ku even with the grease in 92. I just don't think they have come down since. Hopefully my brain hasn't walked off the cliff

I’ve experienced numerous tearing down the goal posts when Nebraska has lost and were at opposing venues..

1981 at Iowa
1986 at Colorado
1996 at Arizona St
2000 at Kansas St
2002 at Iowa St— I believe they tried but back than Iowa St had some kind of goal post that couldn’t be torn down... they worked at getting it down but never had then torn down by the time we left our bus to go back home..

In Lincoln it was usually beating Oklahoma and of course the 1992 game against Colorado..

I still think that 1992 is the last time they have come down.

1994 vs. Colorado. Vaulted us to #1 in the polls.
At about 2:10:30 the game ends, you can see at 2:12:35 or so the south goalposts had been torn down...


The Omaha World-Herald also talks about it, both were torn down "for the eighth time in stadium history".

That's the last I remember it happening, so what are the other seven?

1993 Oklahoma (Clinched a shot at the national title in the Orange Bowl)
1992 Colorado (First home win over CU since 1988)
1991 Oklahoma
1989 Oklahoma (First home win over OU since 1982; OU was unranked at the time (probation))
1982 Oklahoma
1978 Oklahoma (Osborne's first win over OU)
1959 Oklahoma (Broke OU's 75-game conference winning streak)

Sipple was concerned they might be torn down against USC in 2007.

So the final tally is 6 times against Oklahoma and twice against Colorado.

Seven happened during the Tom Osborne era before he won his first national championship. The other was in the midst of Bill Jennings' 3rd season that brought Nebraska's record to 3-4 on the year (finished 4-6 with a loss in front of 8300 fans at Kansas State).

there's not a really peak moment at home during the season like the old big 8, championship games have done away with that.

it's not like you can beat a team at home then be guaranteed to play in the national championship game anymore.

Late November. Day game. Probably started at 2:30. Ended around 5:30. Plus, the stadium is older. Permanent lighting was not installed until 1999.

Remember the 2002 Husker road show? Seemed like every other road game, goal posts were being torn down. Okay, maybe just Iowa State and Oklahoma State. KSU didn't even bother tearing them down after blowing us out in 2002 and having torn theirs down in 1998 and 2000.

According to Wikipedia, the game started at 1:30 PM and was not on tv. I guess the game was over at about 4:30 pm. Networks pay for temporary lights not Nebraska.

Good point. And with the lack of a historical rival I can't imagine what it would take to see them come down again.

That makes sense as the Sooners were on probation and couldn't be on live TV. Hence, why they had a 1:30 start time.

Well we are due. lol Considering, yes we have the longest losing streak in P5 a win against purdue could be justified. Although I would like to save it for beating Ohio St next year ;)

I assume you know I’m being completely sarcastic. Get the win - celebrate a little and get on with daily improvement with hopes of an encouraging showing against Wisconsin. .

I have a section of goal post from the 1993 Oklahoma game. Plus, the video above shows the students tearing them down. Can't remember them coming down after that, but my student seats in '94 were in row 73 so I'm not sure I could have gotten down to them without trying to leave at halftime.

If the 2018 Huskers go two offensive possessions without a turnover or penalty, the students should tear down the goalposts.

The cheerleaders were leading us in chants of "O! U! SUCKS!" Gdowski was raining TD passes that day. It was glorious dominating OU. So much tension released on that game. The Game of the Century II was such an utter let down that we were after blood in 1989.

Yea I wished Gdowski had started two or three years for us.....Really thought he was a better QB than Steve Taylor..
