Build a first class facility. There are only so many parts you can keep adding to an old car. Sinking $100+ million into a 44 year old building just doesn’t make sense especially with increasing TV revenue. Do it now while we can afford it.

Wait, the Hump renovations are going to cost 100+ million dollars? Dang, the brand spanking new baseball park was only 50 to 60 million.

Put it down on South Farm....you would have plenty of parking and you could run shuttles to/from campus.

A replacement 8500 seat arena would be nice. With proper premium suites and club amenities so we can get the high donors in them and students closer to the court.

Getting suites into the existing seating bowl without blocking sight lines will be a challenge, unless they’re at the top of the upper deck.

I love(d) the Hump, but it might be time. The men’s program needs something to spark interest.

I’m fine with just the renovation. Won’t be the same being on campus without the cake like looking basketball arena. Just keep updating the inside. It shouldn’t take a whole new basketball arena to get fans interest again. Ole miss had to build a new one, because the sad pad was so terrible. I think the roof was leaking at one point. The hump just needs some upgrades and it should be fine.

I talked to a current ole miss student this week, and although she was not a big sports fan, she was going on and on about how she LOVED going to games at the pavilion even if the rebels weren’t very good. She said it was the venue that she loved and how much fun it was going there and that it was her favorite thing to do on campus. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a first-class facility that we could be proud of again and perhaps might generate some excitement back into the program? Gotta hand it to ole miss here, that is a first-class facility.

If we were wise, we would start from scratch and save money in the long run by not have to tear down and rebuild in 15 years anyway.

The Hump is so ugly in the background of baseball games. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.

There's only one basketball program going anywhere, and that's only as long as we have Vic Schaefer. You might as well get used to the status quo in the men's program, because that is what it's going to be unless we hit the jackpot with a hire someday down the road...and he'd get hired away if so. We had a decent run but times have changed and the game has as well. It sucks.

I know the Hump is in no form or fashion in the the shape the Tad Pad was, but.. I know as an OM fan it feels different going to games now, because you are excited about going to the new arena. Now, I’m sure some of that can also be attributable to the 2-3 buzz a new coach brings. Especially when he over-achieves in year 1. But, you’re proud to go to the game, even if the game itself doesn’t really excite you.

Long term and short term, I think you’d be better off building a new arena versus extensive renovations. It’s kind of like going to pick up a date in a car you’ve had to do a bunch of work on, versus a brand new one. Your enthusiasm/confidence level is going to be different. I know the topic has been beaten to death, but the Hump used to be a wild environment for opponents. It was an event for State fans. I had State friends who were passionate about it. And something has changed. It’s just never gotten back to what it used to be.

I fully support, and even though they did their best to merge the two, walking from the practice facility over to the coliseum is like traveling back in time from the future to the 1970s.

It’s not that I think a Hump upgrade would be worthless, but it’s just time for a new arena. The best personal comparison I can give is when the Grizzlies moved from the Pyramid to the FedEx Forum. When they played in the Pyramid, it was technically NBA basketball, but it just felt like watching a loaned team. When they moved to the Forum, though, it was like Memphis’s NBA team had truly arrived. Here we are twenty years later, and the building still seems state of the art.

Granted, I get that we’re not going to be able to pump $200M into a new college arena, but I’m really having a hard time seeing the downside to a new building. They have a very real and measurable impact on a fan base, teams, and recruiting.

Weak post here. If they are going to build a brand new arena why in the hell wouldn’t the men play in it?

I’m in agreement with this thread, I don’t think the proposed renovations are going to help much at all.

What a great idea! We need to start an SPS piggybank fund to build a new basketball veinue. I think we can make it happen for 80-100 milliion - maybe 200 million, depending on how bir folks want the "Big Money" suites to be. Put me down for $5.00.

We might also want to draft a team that folks want to come watch. That would help a lot, also. Not much fun watching the guys lose, regardless of how swell the gym is.

State of the art Auburn Arena - built in 2010 for $86M

Seats - 9,100+

The arena also contains two practice courts, a weight room, 12 suites, coaches offices, the Auburn Ticket Office, and the Lovelace Athletic Museum.

Just saw a list of the top 10 arenas in college basketball. The years they were built were: 90, 68, 76, 27, 71, 86, 80, 28, 55, and 40. Point being age is not necessarily a reason to replace an arena.

Yes! I can't think of anything better than tearing down an academic building and putting one or two (three or four?) departments into limbo so we can build a gym for a team that can't win. Excellent idea. You need to start working on that today.

It's interesting that the two newest facilities in the SEC (Auburn and Ole Miss) also have the smallest capacity. They are the only two with a capacity < 10k. People just don't go to games like they used to. That's why I would favor the most cost efficient option. Where did we get the $100 million number? Can someone provide a link?

Was the Hump on that list? Some of those 10 are truly iconic arenas, but some are just on there for notalgia and at least one is a pro arena occasionally used for college games.

The ship sailed on tearing down the Hump when..

..we chose to attach the Mize Pavilion to it. Now it would probably be cost prohibitive to try to work around the MP and build something new. Without having done that the logical thing would be to build a new 8,500 seat arena in the east parking lot. Then shave off the hill where the Hump sits and be able to showcase Dudy Noble a little more.

Auburn sliced up the old Beard Eaves and turned it into a first class student rec center (And make no mistake.. we are dead last in the SEC when it comes to student rec centers)

We're talking about building it for the women's basketball team.

Six Pack Summary for Thursday, Feb 13, 2020:

1. Keep Howland because we just can't expect to do any better because our program just isn't attractive.

2. Build a completely new basketball arena.

Hell yeah! Let’s build a brand new facility for a program in an irrelevant sport and and completely ignore the second most profitable sports program on campus. That’ll show em!
