These can be the best games lol. Football brawls are pretty harmless. The flag stuff needs to be reigned in though no doubt.

I have coached several youth sports (currently a hockey coach), and I'm actually surprised this didn't spill over to the parents. I see some weird stuff (like a parent fight at a mite hockey game [7-8 year olds] last week), so in my opinion the big story is how quickly this was mitigated.

Craziest adults, in my opinion:
1) Hockey
2) Baseball/Softball
3) Wrestling
4) Soccer
5) Basketball

I don’t think you can ever justify or understand fighting on the field.
I don’t care how big the rivalry is.

In a million years, even in the tumultuous, riotous 60’s...it would never have happened to a Clary Anderson coached Montclair team.

Yet it easily could happen today.

Ultimately the coaches have to have control over the players. They are the adults in the room. Thug has now been identified by some people as being code for someone who is black. It is more readily used when things like this fight happen than if it were white kids. Just the times we live in.

I have seen kids get completely run over during lacrosse games and have the parent of the kid delivering the hit cheer wildly as the other kid gets up slowly or leaves the field. Not sure that I would appreciate that if it were my son and would have something to say to the cheering parent.

I wonder if the fact that neither team was in the playoffs had an effect. In fact, both programs have declined over the last 10-15 years. I wonder to what degree that's caused by the parochials coming in and "stealing" some of the best talent.

And demographics is by no means dispositive. Ridgewood almost lost their lacrosse program the first year it played at the varsity level due to a major fracas during a game against Nyack. Stemmed more from the fact that both teams were mediocre and tried to use physicality to overcome their lack of talent than what their backgrounds were.

I don't think anyone's bringing in race.

There are never brawls when Weequahic plays Shabazz.

Speaking of that Newark South Ward rivalry, who won the game today?
When I went to South Side H.S. 1938-42, now Shabbazz,Weequahic was the number one Rival. On 11/11/1941 two of our kids got injured, and taken out of the game. That evening a group of us gathered at the high school to find out how Erwin"Bullet" Winklereid was.He played at RU post war.Turned out he had a broken arm. The other player,Walter Eisele, was in serious condition in the hospital. He died three days later.Walter was a hemophiliac and had signed the parental permission slip so that he could play football. The game that he loved and for which he gave his life.Sad story.A tree was planted at the School in his memory.

Vitales is one of my favorite restaurants. On the border of Bogota on Queen Anne Rd.

That's most definitely NOT Teaneck.
Empire Hunan is OK. And the Italian restaurant is Amarone.
Sorry, but I'm talking specifically of Cedar Lane. Big disappointment.

Huh. You're right It IS part of Teaneck.
I'm wrong. I never thought of this side of DeGraw Avenue as being part of Teaneck.
Nevertheless, it's far from the downtown area of Teaneck....which is what I was talking about. Cedar Lane.
Vitale's is just OK.

You never want to see this stuff but it wasn't that bad. What I don't like to see is all the adults coming out on the field.

So I'm a thug because I'm from the Sack? Off the field there is no issue between the towns. This doesn't carry over to other areas of life. I played for Sack and coached there as well as coached at Teaneck.
they're not thugs just misunderstood lads, letting off a little good natured steam. are you shittin me, they are thugs

There's no centralized "downtown" area in Teaneck. It's a large suburb that was specifically designed NOT to have one. They've used strict zoning to maintain that.

Next time you drive on route 4, take a look around. You'll notice as soon as you cross the border, there are suddenly no businesses on the highway... just trees. The greenway was very intentional.

There are plenty of nice restaurants scattered around Teaneck Road, Cedar Lane, Queen Anne, and Degraw.

@Jim_from_RU Vitale's - Good food, but they need to clean their taps once in awhile. Beer on draft is gross there.

NO its not. Here's a story that goes with this. Many years later when the new Shabazz building was built, a maintenance man told the AD about finding an engraved foot stone near the old building. It had Walter's name on it.The AD,an old friend of mine called me and I told him the significance of the marker.I honestly cannot recall what was done with it but I can find out.You know about Johnson ave,. do you? Thanks for asking.

That wasn't that big of a deal. People in social media like to make grand statements about kicking kids out of sports indefinitely and other ridiculous things, but this was over in two minutes and nobody looked to be hurt. If a kid is suspended for a game that's fine, but get a grip--this was lightweight stuff.
Seriously, I've seen worse in adult rec hockey leagues, many times with no suspensions given out. Ban them from interscholastic sports? Give me a break.

I work at a hockey rink and I can attest to hockey parents being lunatics. Fortunately the parents we have on our travel teams are pretty good, but whenever we host tournaments there is a good chance of there being an incident with a parent. We once had a coach ejected from a game, he was escorted off the bench and around the rink, and then as play was about to start up again, he opened a door to the ice and walked across the ice to continue yelling at the ref. The kids were lined up for the faceoff ready to start playing again, but their parents were cheering this guy on for interrupting this game between a bunch of 9 and 10 year olds to berate a guy who is just trying to do his part-time job.

A year ago after a 10U tournament championship game, we had to call the police to have them drive around our parking lot to prevent a brawl from breaking out between the parents. At the same tournament at the 8U level, this one team's parents were viciously harassing the 11-year old ref. Personally, I don't think you should be able to ref at such a young age, but I felt so bad for the poor kid having to hear this nasty stuff that all of these grown adults were shouting at him. I'm surprised he still refs, I think most kids would have been discouraged and quit. Youth sports would really be much better if the parents didn't watch the games.

Shame about that marker disappearing. They could've saved it or moved it when they built the new building back in the day. Or maybe they could set something up like another marker or plaque around the new stadium area.

BTW, I lived across the street from the HS from 84-02, graduated from MXSHS in 90. I also think it's cool that they somewhat acknowledging their SOUTH SIDE days by putting that on some of their recent football and basketball uniforms, along with Malcolm X Shabazz. Of course im jealous of their '35' football uni combos compared to our gold and white jerseys when i played lol.

Sad story, but you have to be just plain stupid to play football as a hemophiliac.

I drive on Cedar Lane every single day. Tell me what is so awful about Cedar Lane.

Al....once again...slowly.
Rightly or wrongly, I consider Cedar Lane as sorta the Main Street of Teaneck. And I've found it to be virtually bereft of quality places that I wanna ever return to.
That includes bars, restaurants, bakeries, ice cream parlors, hardware stores, etc.
And that surprised me about the town in the 17 years I've lived nearby and frequently visit Cedar Lane. Nearly always a disappointment

Restaurant row it’s not, and It ain’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s harsh to say it’s awful. I’ll give you one amazing place on cedar lane - IHOP, the GOAT breakfast.

Jesus, how many do you need on a one mile strip? We already covered restaurants, Butterflake is a good bakery, and Bischoffs is the old time local ice cream shop you'll find in any decent suburb. There's a line out the door in the summer.

As far as hardware stores, the Home Depot killed them. But you must realize that's not unique to Teaneck right?

Ridgefield Park has its own hardware store and a way better bakery. As does Ridgefield.
I thought Bischoff's sucked. Try Krause's in Fairview for candy. And a ton of better places than Bischoff's for ice cream.
As I said earlier, Empire Hunan is OK. As is Amarone. But neither is worth the trip to Teaneck.
And I won't even comment on Al's IHOP reference.
Sorry, but Teaneck has little to offer. Hackensack at least has White Manna and Brooklyn Pizza and a couple of real diners and some interesting restaurants.
And even Sears...for now.
No contest.

I don't take anything you say seriously. Perhaps you just like to agitate people.
You don’t hang out on the CE board or you’d realize (a) he is being completely serious, he’s not just trying to agitate or troll (b) he most definitely doesn’t mean “criminal” when he says thug, and (c) he’s an admitted racist and apparently proud of it. o_O

I guess he’s entitled to his opinions. And we’re entitled to ours about him.

I love Hackensack for two reasons... White Manna and Cubby's, though the latter is expensive given the ambiance (or lack thereof). There is also a diner on the same road that has great desserts.

If you are a "Diners, Drive Throughs and Dives" kind of person and want to make a culinary pilgrimage, head over and get..
1. a few sliders from White Manna
2. pulled pork on garlic bread from Cubby's

The huge deep-fried hot dog at Cubby's is great if you want something fast.

While I'm at it, about 15 minutes away is The Dog House, which is a dive bar in Washington Twp (Bergen County). They sell deep-fried, bacon wrapped hot dogs as well as bacon wrapped meatballs. Awesome.

My final stop on the "shave a few years off your life" tour of Bergen County is Steve's Burgers in Garfield. Great burgers, but the absolute best French fries that you will ever have.
