I worked on grounds crew at The Dude one season as a student. Working on the infield dirt was the first thing we did every morning. Baseball players are like ground hogs digging holes in the dirt with their spikes. The pitchers dig a hole to push off the rubber, batters dig holes in the box, infielders stand in the same spot and dig holes. So every morning we filled holes, tamped/packed dirt in the holes, and wet it all down.

I swear by game 2, the right-handed batters get 4 inches shorter every time they step in the box. By season's end, if you listen closely you can hear voices speaking Mandarin from that dang canyon.
