So, you're saying that in a place like Memphis, which has had a mask mandate for more than a month, if 20% of the population doesn't wear a mask that explains why cases continue to rise there? What you're saying makes absolutely no sense. If a higher percentage of the population are wearing masks than it was a month ago, then it stands to reason that there would be some measurable improvement seen in cases if masks are effective at stopping the spread. It's the mother of all retarded arguments to say that overall case counts continue to rise because a small percentage of the population doesn't comply with the mask mandate - because a large portion of the population does.

The deal is, neither you nor I know exactly what percentage of people are complying with the mask mandates. I base my reason to wear a mask based on information I have gotten from John Hopkins School of Medicine, The Mayo Clinic, M. D. Anderson Medical Center, UCLA school of Medicine. I go to these places because they have established themselves as some of the premier medical facilities on the face of this big old blue green ball of fun we call planet earth. I am NOT basing my decision to wear a mask on what is said on here nor would I base my decision to not wear a mask based on info from here. SPS is great for mole crickets and killing weeds in my yard but when it comes to possible life and death issues I get info from people with an established reputation for giving sound medical advice. This is America and you may do as you please I guess but I would respectfully ask that you go read the info from some or all of those organizations before making a possible life altering decision.

He seems to be doing everything too slowly.

That said, I'm all for it. Slow the r0 at the right time, lower the herd immunity threshold. I think we're close to that time.

It appears to be an aberration in Alabama.

Mask mandate went into effect 7/16, and cases reported peaked the next day (and we don't back date). Hospitalizations plateaued on 7/30, so given the time from exposure to symptoms to hospitalization, that would appear to also indicate the mask mandate just happened to come soon after we'd hit whatever passes for herd immunity. Assuming there's not a third wave, we can have a lively debate over whether masks made any difference (and I tend to think they help).

https://bamatracker.com/

We've had 90,000 confirmed cases, so take the minimum of 10x known to get 900,000, or ~19% of the population infected to date. High number of 25% gets you to ~47% infected. There have been indications herd immunity may be somewhere between 20% and 40% for this virus.

Keep up the Fight Drebin!!!
Don’t stop till you get enough...rail against a simple act that (for the sake of argument) could be effective in slowing the spread..

The fact is, MS is heading towards a prime example of ‘what not to do’...I believe they’ve passed Florida in cases per million?

I just hope MS isn’t getting into a ‘Lilly Pads in a Pond Scenario’..
My sister in law in MS is awaiting her test results btw.

Instead of trying to shame people who dare to use logic and reason to question the legitimacy of masks, how about you provide some data that shows they're effective? All I'm hearing is "you're an idiot if you don't think they help." I think you're an idiot for saying that without evidence. Answer my question posed earlier: why do we still have issues with positive cases where there have been mask mandates a month or longer? You can't. So shame away.

People think masks are a cure all, you still have to social distance.

And links for you to read.

TL;DR

Use of masks by healthcare workers (HCWs) and non-healthcare workers (Non-HCWs) can reduce the risk of respiratory virus infection by 80%

Wearing a mask has about the same effectiveness (80% ) from getting an airborne respiratory disease as wearing a condom does to prevent pregnancy (85% ).

Ok. How about this? Pretty please, with sugar on top, where a 17n mask. Even if it doesn't help (it does), it definitely doesn't hurt.

There is a false equivalency going on in this thread. Some of you are saying that since place A has had a mask requirement in place and since COVID continues to rise in place A therefore mask are ineffective. That is bovine scat. Having a mask requirement in place Does Not = everyone wearing mask. I’ve seen lots of you brain dead mofos without mask on in places where mask were required. This incorrect assumption that mask are ineffective is mainly due to folks who simply refuse to abide by the mandate.

So why did the CDC in the initial stages of this pandemic literally say to leave the masks to the surgeons?

And even Fauci hemmed and hawed over it for a while. And now says wear not only masks but goggles. And then after he gets out of camera range, he can't get his mask off fast enough

I'm not going to speak for him, but given that covid cases continue to be a problem in locations where mask mandates have been in place for sometime, there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that they are effective. If wearing a mask was a gamechanger, there would be no need for lockdowns, empty baseball stadiums, or school delays, and we'd be seeing cases, hospitalization rates, and deaths plummet in places where there are mask mandates.

I still haven't heard a rational answer from anyone as to why cases aren't coming down in areas where there have been mask mandates for a month or more.

Hawaii has had a mask mandate for months and had a pretty big spike in July. You won’t get a straight answer. They will just tell you that you aren’t a Dr and you should trust the people who have been as wrong as you could possibly be on this for 5 months. A couple of months ago masks were completely ineffective per the same people they are slob knobbing over currently.

I heard something different in today's presser from him. I will go back and listen again. Regardless, if you think the case count is accurate, you're fooling yourself.

You heard wrong then

And you think there are more cases ( lots of missed people) or fewer cases (many repeated positive tests?

Did he not admit that people were going and getting a 2nd test at another facility, while waiting on results from an initial test? I was working, but I heard that clearly.

Because of they same issue as here. People just aren't wearing them. You seen anybody at the beach with a mask on? It's also a tourist destination which makes it easy for an asymptomatic person to spread it. You also have a lot of families living closely together.
Plus, masks don't stop it. It only slows it down.

Because the government was hoarding PPE for the doctors, so they claim. Their weren't enough for what they were expecting.

Perhaps a visual guide with a simple explanation can help with how there are less particles to breath in if everyone is wearing a mask and social distancing.

View attachment 17105

Careful with this example... campshelbydog will accuse you of pissing on people. I used an example this weekend how wearing a mask and spitting, the mask would keep the spit in the mask rather than out. His brain could not comprehend the analogy, so he proceeded to hurl insults at me for about 5 or 6 more post.

What the anti mask crowd will refuse to admit is that a mask without question will keep stuff from your nose and mouth in the mask. That can’t be debated. To debate the fact of that is ludicrous. The anti mask crowd has it in their head that someone sad the virus would disappear of mask were worn. All a mask is doing is lower the chance of getting spreading droplets, which again can’t be debated. It’s like using an umbrella, you still likely will get water in you but a lot less than without the umbrella.

That’s basically what you’re arguing with, someone who refuses to admit if you put any type of material in front of your face, it’s going to reduce stuff that spreads out.

Unless the circumstantial part is whether he is positive or not. The case count is inflated. Dr Dobbs himself said people are getting tested more than once during a 14 day period and it's counted as more than 1 positive per person. People look at the number of positive cases being reported and think that is number of different people infected. It's not.

Donna did not say that. He said just the opposite.

Because they were very short supply and we were being told by the Chineses that it didn't spread in the air. Why are you still a slave to what the Chinese wanted you to believe? It's been proven wrong.

You still can't buy a genuine N95 mask, or at least I've not been able to.

You can get them, in limited quantity if you are in a legitimate healthcare business. I can get them, sometimes. I can't get enough that we aren't having to reuse them.

I meant the average, non-medical person.

Wasn't 3M (I think that was the company) supposed to ramp up production to meet the demand? I suppose with the summer spike we're having that's impossible though.

Another one who believed China and won't back down now in the face of evidence. Nobody has ever said masks will completely stop it. A vaccine won't do that either. Neither will universally adhered to and neither is 100% effective. They both will reduce the spread quite a bit. For someone who wants to get back to normal you certainly don't want to do anything that is actually effective to get there.

Nursing homes no later than the first of April were requiring their staff to wear masks and they have been on lockdown for that long. For all of you that swear by the effectiveness of masks, if masks work so well, why did we see severe outbreaks in nursing homes, and why are we continuing to see new nursing home cases? If they worked so well, why aren't we now see zero new nursing home cases?

Patients going back and forth to/from hospitals are spreading it. So are workers who aren't tested everyday. And again, mask do not stop it. It just slows it down.

I believe others have answered sufficiently in regards to possible hoarding and shortage of mask. Another thing we overlook here is that this is a NEW disease. We respond to it based on our knowledge of previous, similar diseases. Being a NEW disease it sometimes doesn't behave like what we have experienced in the past. We are, just now, learning a lot about how this thing operates and how we can combat it. If you want to keep taking advice from conspiracy theorist and your buddy that barely graduated HS then by all means be my guest. I am going to seek advice from proven, reputable medical experts.

You don’t know how strict the staff actually follows it and I know for a fact some employees refuse to wear a mask when not at work. I saw a woman I know that works in a nursing home at Walmart in a group of 4 people chit chatting and laughing up a storm just 2 days ago, none of them had a mask on.

I have a friend whose kids go to school at Presbyterian Christian school in Hattiesburg Mississippi. It’s located in Forrest County. They’ve already gotten an email from the headmaster stating they would be starting school next week as scheduled because the rules don’t apply to them since they are part of the MAIS.

Which hospitals are sending contagious patients to nursing homes? If you have knowledge of this and if you are truly concerned about the spread of Covid, you should do you civic duty and report this to the Mississippi State Department of Health. Hell, with this expose' you might end up on CNN.

The US had about 1/3 the current population.

It was also way less dense and way less interconnected. I think the higher density and higher interconnection will result in the virus burning hotter than say the Spanish flu would have. I think the places where it took off on the tail end of cold and flu season may see it burn out more quickly than 15 months because they will have a full cold and flu season and then some before 15 months is up.

Masks or no masks something needs to be done because MS is about to become #1 in the nation for Covid based on per capita, according to a Harvard director of global health. Per Dr. Jha, "testing is down 8% while cases are up 37% which means test positivity is up, way up. Actually the highest in the nation 22%. Hospitalizations are way and the daily death toll is up nearly 2x in the past 2 weeks". He goes on to say schools shouldn't be re-opening until the state stops indoor dinning/bars/gyms, issue a statewide mandate for masks (in effect) and fix testing, if not they'll just shut down again.

Mask mandate. All kids in schools must wear masks. 8 county districts start dates pushed back.

I'm in favor of the masks, but not so much pushing the start dates back. There's no guarantee that waiting 2 weeks is gonna make anything any better for them. School systems simply have to get back to work. Yeah, there are going to be kids and teachers who will catch it. Folks who claim that it's going to be a petri dish environment need to head down to the local WalMart/Lowes/Kroger and watch folks pile into those businesses every single day. i can almost guarantee those crying the loudest for us to keep the schools closed because it's "too dangerous" are rolling into the Dollar General and Piggly Wiggly on the regular with a car full of folks in tow.

The push back is less to do with getting the numbers down than it does for the school districts to adjust due to the number of students both attending class and working remotely. From what I have heard, districts were looking at 20% remote and then once they finished their surveys they realized that 40-50% of the students were electing to learn remotely. That requires switching teachers around, getting IT set up, and get the workflow training they need.

How often are you farting with droplets coming out? Thats actually just sharting.

Our school district delayed a couple weeks because it is giving the district more time to onboard teachers to teach and use the virtual learning platforms. The school district gave the governor a big 17U by declaring it would go full virtual. Another local school district did the same thing yesterday.
Delayed start dates arent just because 'coronabros' want school to start late. There are actual reasons and benefits to a later start.

The testing in MS is still so poor. 10 days to get results at this point is unacceptable. There are only a few areas in North MS where you can get rapid testing.
