We looked sloppy in the 1st half. That missed field goal and letting that punt hit our guy in the leg were 2 bad plays that gave them quite a bit of momentum.
Our defense had nowhere to go but down from last year. Losing 3 players to the first round of NFL draft will do that. The suspensions also aren't helping. It's exacerbating problems on the d-line which will already be a weakness on our team. Your average freshman/sophmore is going to get pushed around and this will only be worse against better competition. If Autry is suspended against K-State expect them to have huge day rushing the ball and it will get worse as we head into SEC play. He is really needed on our young D-Line and think his suspension will hurt the most. Willie Gay being suspended also hurt, but we actually have some depth at linebacker so I don't think its quite as impactful.
Errol Thompson led the team with 10 tackles. That's a solid performance. Brian Cole was also stepping into box and making some nice plays. Our defense got five turnovers, which is impressive. Several of those turnovers seemed unforced, but we still managed to recover which isn't always a guarantee.
Tommy Stevens fumble gave me flashbacks to Kentucky last season. Sometimes I feel like this RPO leaves the QB standing in backfield for too long and it allows defensive ends to tee off. We may end up needing Keaton before the end of the season and I am really glad he still on the roster. He will get his chance next season. This is probably why he decided to stick around. Kylin looked like Kylin. No surprise there. He will have historic year this year if he stays healthy. Tommy Stevens looked good. He hit 10 different receivers, competed 66%, and 2 pass TDs and 1 rushing. Definitely a respectable performance, but nothing mindblowing. The jury is still out on the offense. We looked great vs weaker teams last season too.
We are going struggle against K-State. Their offensive line is 5 seniors. They rushed for 361 yards last week and we will probably get run over, plain and simple. I am glad this is a home game, but anyone who thinks this game is a gimme will be sadly mistaken. If we win it will be a close one.
The jury is still out on this team. I think without suspensions we would be okay, but our d-line is going to struggle. We have talent and in a few years when they bulk up the early playing should pay off.
Unfortunately, I think this is a 6-6 rebuilding year at this point.
