System vs Players

Many on here including myself have at least some doubt about the Leach original air raid working in the SEC. These first 3 games on the surface seem to justify that doubt. However, when we have actually had to have points and stretched the field, the system has worked very well - 20 point comeback with LaTech and 2 play touchdown yesterday. So, is it the system or the current players/decision that aren't working? If it's players/decisions, then we have a couple of young guys that will be able to stretch the field when they are up to college speed. Maybe I'm just looking for a reason to hope.

We seem to only stretch the field when the defense allows us too. Both times we got longer chunk plays - we were down multiple scores where I believe the defense is playing differently. We are 14 games into this and I don't see much hope.

IMO, "wait till he gets the right players for his system" is loser talk. A good coach will improve a team almost immediately. He works with what he has and figures it out.

Member when Mullen first got here? He immediately made us better. Admittedly not hard to do after Crooms level expectations.

Same with Jackie. It was immediately obvious from the first game that the team was better. The average lifespan of a college football coach is about 4 years. If you're hiring a coach that takes 3-4 years to "get the right players to play his system," you're hiring the wrong coach.

I don’t camp out on here as I did years ago so this may have been discussed before, but my thought is that when we have pushed even a little tempo (snapping the ball with the play clock above 10), we have had real success. Just look at the end of la tech and Memphis. If we play aggressively and relatively quickly, we will score oceans of points.

Go watch some Minshew highlights, he gets rid of the ball fast. That's what we have to do while our OL is still in development. You can't stand around back there forever like we do now.

We need to 'hit faster' whatever that means, and get more downhill. We just aren't doing that, it seems we are playing uphill, and every yard is a struggle.

Well - I would also say that the team is better than the Slophead years, as far as results vs. expectations. No question that Slophead likely goes 1-9 or so last year, and probably is 0-3 now so far in 2021. Just to note the positive side.

Personally, I think the system and the players are sound. I'm just concerned that we are being too conservative with the play calls. We're not letting the WRs go after the ball down field (except on the last possession as you said).

From what I’ve seen, I think you all are spot on about tempo being a primary issue. I don’t know why Leach isn’t using it more, but you have been phenomenal when you have.

I understand that Corral is playing out of his mind, and you’d obviously be better with him over Rogers. But, I think our tempo plays a significant role, as well.

Yeah if you hire a coach that needs to “get his players” you hired the wrong coach. We ran off a perfectly good experiences qb and are now on our 2nd qb in 14 games that cant find all these alleged open receivers.

Don't agree with this. It makes no sense to have more success throwing deep when down in a game & the defense is playing to prevent big plays.

It's a mentality change, not them letting us. In both situation where the offense has been good at the end of games, short routes should've been open much more than deep ones

I think the fact that the offense isn't working against CUSA and a so/so ACC defense just shows that there is something wrong with these players and/or Leach. Maybe the air raid won't work against the SEC, but we know it will work against CUSA and ACC defenses.
For whatever reason, we suck at running the air raid. I'm not sure if we suck worse at the air raid than Leach's previous two teams after basically a year's worth of games; I'd be interested to see the stats. Just based on record, it looks like TTech started off ok and got better starting his third year. It took him until his fourth year to get WSU going. I think recruiting will kill him before then if he doesn't have us looking at least decent at the end of this year and good next year.

Surely you can see how the overall talent level of the team plays into the record? If you can't, there's no use in having an educated discussion on this.
