Even now he won't bash Harbaugh.

Also doesn't sound like he's a lock for NU at all and no indication that he's even considering us (or vice versa). He called up ND and dOSU (who don't have room for him). There is plenty of interest from UCLA to Oklahoma. Hopefully the family voice and the distance will help, but who knows.

the latter one from a UM blog that puts some of the blame on Swenson. Interesting to note that UM's class includes two other tackle prospects that are rated considerably higher than Swenson.

His solicited interest in Notre Dame and Ohio State, neither of which has room for him at this point, suggests he's hard set on playing big time college football in the Midwest versus somewhere out West or Southwest.

It would be great if he came here developed into at productive starter, but if he elects to go somewhere else so be it. What happened to the kid is despicable. We got solid O line prospects and Swenson would add to the group. I just hope wherever he goes this drives him to show up Hardballs and that school plays Michigan at least one in his career. Might as well be September 29, 2018 in Evanston!

Here's a story based on an interview with Swenson that was posted this morning by TheWolverine.com. It's hard to read this and think very highly of Coach Harbaugh. Give it a read and ask yourself: if you were a prospect, what would you think about Michigan?

17 or 18 year old kids think they are the best. They want to go where adulation and championships will follow. What happens to someone else is irrelevant, it won't happen to "them".

Eh... This kind of situation makes it pretty easy to negative recruit against Michigan.

Erik - if you are reading this, you absolutely can NOT go wrong with committing to Coach Fitz and NU. You will not meet a better group of players and coaches. The education is second to none and the location is the BEST. It is truly a football family.

NU players and coaches pride themselves on integrity, and I do not think that is just lip service, they actually live it.

Would love to see you in purple !!

Go Cats !

Kind of annoyed...

I just read an article that basically trashed Erik Swenson (link) with comments like

...Swenson, a four-star recruit, "played not to get hurt instead of playing to show that he was dominant and the best player in the state."

Swenson's high school coach told the Detroit Free Press that the scholarship offer's disappearance wasn't abrupt. Perhaps this situation is simply another example of how leaping to judgment without all the facts isn't a good idea.

According to The Wolverine, there were rumblings for some time that Swenson would not be heading to Michigan.

These quotes imply that Swenson has known for a long time that Michigan was going to rescind the offer and that his stating that he and his family were surprised is a lie.

But his high school coach's actual quote (link) is:

Mark Molinari, Swenson’s coach at Downers Grove South, told The Detroit News on Thursday he knew something was not right with Swenson’s Michigan relationship within the last month.

“It didn’t just happen yesterday,” Molinari said. “We got some red flags three weeks ago, just comments made from coach encouraging Erik to make all five official visits (to other schools). That was the first indication it wasn’t heading in the direction we thought it was going.”

Molinari said he told Drevno, who he described as a “nice man” Swenson was not planning to make any official visits. But Molinari has since called other schools only to find that with so little time before signing day, there are few openings and Swenson has no relationships with other coaches because he has been committed to Michigan. Molinari said the situation did not become clear until Monday.

The fact that there were hints from the UM coach three weeks ago (roughly early January 2016) after Swenson had been committed since 2013 is a LOT different from the implication that he has known for a long time and is responsible himself due to his refusal (their word) to attend a camp last summer. This article also says that there were "hints" given to him in November.

Pulling the scholarship was low but something I accepted as being a part of the win-at-all-costs attitude of those programs that tout win percentage above integrity. But by participating in trashing this young man's reputation with a very careful crafting of words means that they have transcended the Alabama/Ohio State level of bottom feeder.

I can understand the whole bit about pulling a schollie after seeing the kid's performance (though "playing soft" seems a bit of a stretch), but the kid's season ended in late October, and they pulled it on January 19--after an assistant told him in December to get "ready to play for Michigan."

WTF? Does not compute.

The article should have been titled "CYA". It's a pathetic attempt to spin control ****** behavior that Michigan doesn't want to own.
