All that happened here is Gonzaga grabbed the OAD hot potato. Good for them.

It’s the system that’s broken and the effects are just spilling over to other teams now. First it was UK and Cal was revolutionary. Then Duke started and then Cal was behind the curve. Now Gonzaga is grabbing OAD talent and they’ll feel the effects in about two years.

The only question is will Cal be able to adapt. If he can we’ll be fine and if he can’t we’ll flounder until someone else takes over. As long as they can adapt, too.

The brilliance of Pitino early to mid-90s was he adopted and perfected a new style and sold it and won with it. But that model changed. He left town before we saw the worm turn. The master of pulling out prematurely.

Cal came in after a dismal stretch and championed a new paradigm. Now that paradigm is changing and we’ll see if he can adapt. I’m of the opinion that he’s earned enough to get the chance but the tide is turning fast. He’s not the only one getting swept up in it.

And on a side note some of you are so eat up with politics that it is unhealthy. If every talk radio and cable news channel disappeared tomorrow you’d still have a good life that most on earth would envy. Being offended isn’t a badge of honor. If your cause is righteous you don’t need to argue 12 hours a day on the internet to prove it.

And yes I know “that’s what a message board is for”. Just makes it so tiresome.

See...I disagree with a part of this about Pitino. Pitino revolutionized college basketball by focusing on shooting the 3 and defending the opponents 3 point Shooting. That is still relevant today. See Alabama a d every other team who can light it up from 3 land. In addition Pitino was a master of game planning for the other team. He was notorious for having his assistants break down game film and find weaknesses of the other teams stars. I can remember Tim Duncan and Keith Van Horn to name a few that Pitino shut down In tournament games. Cal by his own admission does t even look at other teams. He always says I only worry about my team. Pitino would be a legend today if he had not lost his way stayed at UK. From a purely coaching perspective it’s a no Contest.

So you think you should post feed cousins when there's 2/3 people on him and 2 guys wide open at the 3 point line? Yea makes alot of sense.
You always take the open shot.

KAT dominated in 2015. If it hadn't been for him we get beat by N Dame.
Cal has always made his big man play to their strengths, which is being big. He puts them in the paint and every guy we've had that had offensive games have been a nightmare.
Most big men want to be guards, you can't let players play on the perimeter just because they believe they can. This is why he's had so much success with young talent and everyone else fails

People are conflating things. The reason we stunk this year is because we had bad players, not because of anything specific about philosophy of offense or defense.

Very true. Look at every one of Cal’s UK teams. Except for maybe 13 and 16, I’m not sure any of the guys this year would have been a top 4 player on any of Cal’s other teams.

Gonzaga is having their cake and eating it too. They keep their good players for 3 to 4 years, get guys drafted AND are now taking the best recruits.
Mark Few is doing it quietly too, he's not jabbering to everyone that will listen, about how great he is and how many draft picks he has. What a concept.

A guy like Few would be such a welcome change. He is letting his actions speak on the court right now. I’m so burned out on Cal’s jabbering.

Pitino was a better coach. Had he stayed I think he would have won at least 2, but probably 3-4 more titles at UK. We’ve had 2 since he left.
Don’t think he would have won in 98. That was a good team , but not the most talented, no star players. He could have won it with them, but there were better teams. But he could have matched the rate that Roy and K have won it over that span.
But I do think we UK fans make this job one that will burn out a coach faster than any other.

Lots of false statements here. Several of their players went from 3* kids to NBA draft picks and NOW they are grabbing top 10 hs recruits. That’s why I said "Few is having his cake and eating it too".

You misunderstood pretty much everything I said and you're wrong about Gonzaga's schedule. While Cal and his draft pick freshmen were losing to Richmond, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech, Gonzaga was beating Iowa, KU, Auburn. WVa and UVA. They were set to play Baylor, but it got cancelled.

This is not the year to poke holes in Gonzaga, they are in a much better place than UK basketball is right now and you will look silly if you try to argue that.

I said they didn't have many top recruits.. true. I understood everything you said. I was explaining why they have players that are juniors. None of them were highly rated out of highschool and knew they were staying when they committed.
I agree this year they are really good. They have played a good out of conf schedule but i was referring to their conference.
Until they win a title , they won't be looked at as serious. I'm not sure this year will do it for them either.

See, you can't have it both ways though. You can't excuse Cal for constantly coming up short with all the NBA talent he has had, then turn around and say that Gonzaga/Few has to win a title to prove themselves.

The simple fact that Few and Scott Drew are taking 3 star kids and are turning them into teams that are playing like well oiled machines, speaks volumes. A lot of these kids are truly benefitting by playing in those systems, they are now showing up on draft boards. Villanova can be tossed into that group. Those schools are perfect examples of a players first system and the program benefits at the same time. Those are the kids that needed the help.

Our coach takes kids that are getting drafted no matter what they do, then takes credit for getting them to the league. Then claims he's a players first coach. Weird.

Totally agree with you on this. I know the run and gun offense is the sexy thing now days and i also think it is exciting to watch and play in but if u have a really good scoring center, and a really good point guard that distribute the ball and score a little bit will take a team very far. Think if had a better point guard this year compared with our past years we would have won several more games. Yes i am old school. My age you could say really old school.

Nova looked really good last game, I’m rooting for LC all the way, Arkansas has a chance. Gonzaga has a fairly tough path left but they are playing amazing ball.

Alot of the reason they are getting these kids to buy in and play as well oiled machines is because they are unheralded recruits. Same with loyola chicago in the discussion last Sunday on here. Not every coach can coach top egos and kids that know they will make money in a few months. If gonzaga starts landing 4/5 top kids a year we will see how that goes. As of right now they have gotten 2top players and everyone acts as if they have 10.
From around 2009-2014 scott drew was getting several top kids. He couldn't get much accomplished. Much like villanova had a group of guys that were great and won 2 titles off of them, I believe Baylor to be in this same mold. Making sweet 16's doesn't get the job done.

Having a system in which you have a chance every season to win a title isn't for everyone. It takes balls. Sure you will have seasons here n there that aren't great but having 3 out of 4 in the discussion for a title and playing for final 4 birth is what a blueblood program should be. Not being consistently mediocre like nova and baylor and Gonzaga has been up till this point

Anyone still believe seeding is crucial and Nov losses determine how far you go in march? Every march we have these same high seeds advancing and people forget. The dif in a 3 seed or 6 seed is minut. The only real thing that matters is how good you are playing by end of Feb and first of march
