I follow mostly C2 football, has anyone seen any surprising teams/performances, Other than Norfolk Catholic maybe the rest of field is wide open? Sutton might be better than people think, some traditional powers, like Hartington CC might be a bit down,

NC has righted the ship, they cruise the rest of the way even without the starting QB, too good of coaching to let them fall again. Some normal c2 powers seem to be down a bit but the season is just getting started so we will see what is in store the rest of the way.
Everyone seems to think it’ll be NC and Centennial, but I would not discount Sutton. I will be at the Sutton-Freeman game tonight, we should learn quite a bit about both teams tonight. Freeman seems to be an up and comer this year looking for a big win, and Sutton is looking to keep rolling. Should be a good one, but I still see Sutton wining by 10-14 at least.
Sutton absolutely dominated. 400 yards of offense vs 80 for Freeman. Sutton has everything - line, backs, receivers. 40-0
You are right special team is not good. When you are up and they can't move the ball does it really matter. Freeman is a good team and there kids played hard to the end. I work the chains and there kids are very respectful played hard they will win a lot of games.
HCC and Battle Creek down a little bit? Yeah. Surprised? No. Lets look at the 5 teams you mentioned in your post. According to Max preps, BC has about 50 kids out and only 6 seniors. Losses to two current top ten teams. HCC- Less than 30 kids out and only 4 seniors. Losses to 3 top 10 teams including an Aquinas squad that dropped down from C-!. Centennial 38 kids on the roster and about 19 seniors. Wins over two 0-3 teams, and a young Battle creek team. BRLD- 36 kids, 9 seniors. Wins over 3 teams with a total of 1 win between them. Norfolk Catholic? What can I add that hasn't already been said. Young teams are going to start slow, especially when playing upper tier teams. NSAA scheduling has as much to do with end of season records as team performance. That being said, you have to play the schedule that is in front of you. Norfolk Catholic and Centennial final? Way to go out on a limb.
100% agree. No brainer but large numbers and a large group of upper classman, especially seniors is so important. Often it will make an average team a playoff team. Depth is huge in football. Great example was Ponca last year. Hovered below .500 for the past 5 years then had over 25 upper classmen including a large senior class and went 9-0 in the regular season last year.
Norfolk Catholic has a strong program with some exceptional individuals over time but they also always have a very large roster.
If Battle Creek has nearly 50 kids out with only 6 seniors I'd gladly bet that they will make deep playoff runs the next few years. Playing a large number of 17 and even 18 year olds is a huge advantage in the physical game of football.
Ponca IS the perfect example from last year. And BRLD this year. Younger team that took some lumps from the perennial powers the last couple years, but is on the "payback tour" this year. And hopefully the success of some of the senior heavy teams this year, can uplift programs for years to come. If it makes more kids go out because they want to be a part of something, it is the difference between having a great season or having a great program. It makes for better football. Everyone likes a good Cinderella story, and hates on the Powerhouses. I can't help but admire them.
