The +/- statistics basically demonstrate what I was seeing out there, stratifying our players in terms of effort and importance. There are basically three groups:
The Sulkers:
Baker -24
Mathis -17
Harper -10
The Hustle Guys:
McConnell +5
Mulcahy +2
The “Can’t Win Without Them” Guys:
Young -2
Myles +6
While Geo’s performance may still be hampered by injury, it’s really disappointing to see our senior leader and team captain out there with his head down, looking defeated and at times uninterested. On one possession towards the end of the game, he was in the corner by the Rutgers bench, not moving and just frustratedly gesturing towards the point guard.
Harper repeatedly failed to box out and gave up easy boards and putbacks. He started trying again in the last two minutes when it was too late.
Mathis’ performance was less effort-induced and more of a failure to play smart. He must have put his head down and driven straight into the trees, while somehow failing to protect the ball, four times.
It was encouraging to see McConnell knock down some shots. Mulcahy continues to do the little things, but needs to become more of a scoring threat.
Without Young and Johnson, this team loses by an additional ~15 pts.
I thought that the MSU game would be a wake up call, but apparently not. They need to get back to defense and rebounding ASAP instead of pouting because they aren’t maintaining the unsustainable early season 48% 3-point rate.
