OK, I'm bored waiting for the season opener against Virginia Tech. So I applied the skills I learned in my 43 years as a newspaper editor and sportswriter to do research.
Virginia Tech fans don’t even know how to spell their team’s nickname right.
In 1896, the $5 prize went to O.M. Stull, an 1896 VT graduate, for the spirit yell that began:
“Hoki, Hoki, Hoki, Hy.”
The “e” was added later.
At one time, the nickname was The Gobblers. A large turkey pulled the mascot in a cart. A year later, to stop mistreating the bird, the turkey walked with the mascot. Today’s mascot is called a “HokieBird.” It looks more like a cardinal with an oversized snoot.
VT has had many names.
Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College
Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute
Virginia Polytechnic Institute
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (since 1970).
By any name, the turkeys will be castrated on the scoreboard on September 3.
