are you in favor of removing the age limit on alcohol consumption? what about the 11 to 15 years olds? this is whats wrong nowadays, everyone wants to make their own rules, im glad im in my mid 70's and dont have to put up with this **** much longer

Yes, because it's ridiculous, eliminates personal responsibility, and encourages dangerous binge drinking once people get to college where alcohol is more widely available.

As an 11 to 15 year-old, my parents introduced me to alcohol and allowed me to drink with them and at family functions, showing me enjoyment in moderation and taking responsibility for its effects. I drank with friends socially in high school, and upon getting to Rutgers struggled to understand the concept of binge drinking. Even as a Russian, I drink in less excess than pretty much all of my friends.

That's all fine and dandy, but that only helps with maybe one-quarter of Rutgers students attending football games (possibly less, since some seniors have yet to turn 21 and underclassmen appear to show up to games in stronger numbers). The rest of the students aren't interested in showing up to games based on the "promise" of future fun tailgating, only once they turn 21. Given that such a fun student-intensive event was summarily shut down after only 2 games, I can't even consider it much of a promise.
Alright, then how about just showing up, because you are a student! A student who one day will be an Alumnus, with a Degree from one of the top educational institutions, if not the United States, the World.
And, years from now, as you sit in that lucrative job, enjoying all the hard earned results, because of that prestigious University, you can turn to the guy who graduated from another almost as prestigious University, and say, "so, where is your University ranked in the latest football polls, Rutgers is in the top 10!?"
Go the game, ........... yell loudly,
RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR UUUUUUUUUUUUUU!
Thank you for your contribution!
Because you deserve it!

Thing is it'll never go back to 18 or 19 or 20 for that matter. Political pressure will never let it happen. 21 is here to stay.
It doesn't make sense though. If a politician really wanted the younger vote they would lobby hard for a lower drinking age. I do understand it's highly unlikely though

Do young people vote in numbers? Didn't in '12. Politicians listen to people who donate to their campaigns. Doubt there's many younger people doing that. I could see a politician signing off on the end of his career by supporting lowering the age.

The fed's tied .08 to highway funds. The same lobbies who pushed that are never going to sit by and allow the age to be lowered.

Nope, don't see it happening.

I think this year will see a noticeable spike in the younger voters, but you're right and it comes down to the money and who is funding who.

While you may be right, a decade ago would anyone have said marijuana will be legal in several states by 2016? Times change, attitudes change...sometimes quicker than we anticipate. I think the rise of Uber and the eventual transition to driverless cars will negate the drunk driving concerns which is probably the single biggest argument against underage drinking in the US. It may take another 10 or 20 years but I think in my lifetime the drinking age will come down, as I firmly believe it should.

What's the age? In Colorado and Washington it's 21 just like booze. Once you bring high school kids who can be 18 at the time into it the immediate response will be no don't you think?

In 20 years I'll be 86. I doubt the drinking age will be a concern of mine. Probably won't even know what it means by then lol.

Agree it is a smaller population of students but the alternative seems to be nothing at this point. And like you said if fewer of those students actually attend games, maybe this is an incentive for that group. Not sure what other solution there is legally. Otherwise it becomes defunct and rests in peace next to Rutgersfest

Really? With Bernie out, what is going to motivate them to vote? Hillary? Trump? Stein? Johnson?

My kids, juniors at RU, have been to nearly every game since they were born. Both had great things to say about the alley but both have gone onto social media to say that school spirit is more important than a place to have a beer. Both will be at the game and are encouraging other students to attend too, as opposed to boycotting.

I can understand why some are upset that the students' space was eliminated because the AD screwed up.

I tried to read the petition to boycott but all I got was a blank page. I doubt it was removed or taken down, more likely I did something wrong.

Has there been any communication with RU about a new tailgating location for students? A boycott would be awful and would really hurt our team's shot at any type of home field edge on Saturday.[/QUOTE

Alcohol is handled much better in Europe because they are gradually introduced to it from a younger age. It should be 16 for beer/wine and 18 for hard stuff. The 21 limit is just another example of a law that has completely backfired.

Of the things that bother me on this board, grown men criticizing college students is right up there with telling others how to spend their money. I've seen RU students bashed for "leaving early" (when thousands of seats for adults are empty the entire game) and other fans bashed for not "supporting the program" by paying more money for a ticket they can find cheaper somewhere else. It's really embarrassing stuff.

this should be a "read this before your first SN post" sticky :sunglasses:[thumb2]

Gotta wonder how many of these sanctimonious rara (that's "a" rara, not THE rara : ) adults would be attending every RU game with bells on, if the admin decided to eliminate all tailgating.

It'd be an easy headcount.

I don't believe that's why the space was eliminated. I can't get from one to the other through any conceivable course of action -- unless you're thinking that the event was a shitshow, but no one knew about how big of a shitshow it was until they saw it through the periphery of a lens focused on the AD sipping a beer.

How many adults hold a tailgate with 1,999 of their closest friends? Don't tell me you can't see the difference.

Isn't that basically what tailgating is? A parking lot filled with thousands of your closest friends (for the day).

I've noticed we've agreed on many issues but I can't believe you are trying to compare the two. Other than both being called tailgates, there's no real comparison. If they were the same I dare say there'd be no issue being discussed.

I would hope we can agree that the quicker RU can resolve this to everyone's satisfaction or at least as close as possible, the better it'll be.

I'll give ya a like on the last point and on agreeing on multiple issues ... can be rare to find here :)

I haven't seen the student tailgate in person so was just having fun with the idea that a tailgate is basically a parking lot full of dudes and dames partying. I do think RU needs to get its act together - this problem has been festering too long.

I can definitely say from personal experience that the students boycotted every single Rutgers home game from 1996-2000.
Can you blame me? I wasn't a football fan going into RU. One of my first memories was a night game against the U... it wasn't pretty. We didn't score. That year we won 2 games and that may have been be the peak performance of RU football during my time on the Banks. I fully believe I witnessed the worst RU football of anyone on these boards.

I agree with the students to boycott the game. One of the stupidest laws in the US is the 21 drinking age. Every other country in the world has 18 as the age and in many countries you can get wine and beer at age 16. 18-21 years have the right to vote, drive a car, go to war and vote but can't have a few beers.
The taboo on alcohol instead of solid education is what contributes to binge drinking. Heck, I feel that you should be 21 to have full driving privileges before the 21 rule for alcohol.

How else can the students be heard? Boycotting a football game hurts no one,and gets their point across that they are adults not just students, and should be given full rights as such.

Enough with PC bullcrap. Lower the. Drinking age to 19 and let these students learn how to drink responsibly.

Don't agree with this. First of all, boycott because the drinking age is 21? They'll be boycotting forever. Rutgers can't do anything about the legal drinking age. One has nothing to do with the other. The problem was partly underage drinking but also huge crowds and safety concerns. I think they'll find a solution reasonable for both sides.

And how is this 21 year old drinking age PC? It's been around since before the term politically correct. I understand it's different elsewhere but it won't change, at least not in the near future.

No it was designed to slow down tailgating in all areas(except of course private suites).Attendance went down until they slowly backed off.Typical Liberal knee jerk reaction.

It's easy to blame the liberals for that, but it sounds more like capitalism at work -- you hint that they wanted people in the private suites... i.e. a money grab.
