Strange events while watching a UK game

Here's mine ...

It was 2000 and my boyfriend (at the time) and I were going to watch our NCAA game against Syracuse at his apartment. When I got there, he informed me that he had invited his best friend and his friend's date to join us. Okay ... the more, the merrier, right?

So, we're watching the game and there's not a lot of conversation because the two guys and I are pretty much into what's on the screen. Towards the end of the game, the friend's date leans over to me and whispers in my ear, "Who are the guys in the black and white shirts? They never get to shoot the ball."

When friend and his date had left, I informed my boyfriend that I never wanted to "double" with anyone who knew as little about basketball as that girl. That led to a big argument and, since I was already pissed about the loss, I broke up with my boyfriend that same night.

True story!

Okay. This is a true story, which is usually the prelude to a lie. But not this time.

I'm watching the 1998 Duke-UK tournament game alone with my daughter who had turned one a few days earlier (she was born the night of the UK win over St. Joe's in the 1997 tournament. I watched the whole game in the hospital room while my wife was in labor.)

When Kentucky gets down 17 with a bit more than nine minutes to go I rip a UK hat from my head and hurl it across the room. My daughter toddles across the room and fetches it, then toddles over to me and hands it back with a big eight-tooth smile on her face. I look at her and I feel this enormous calm wash over me, and then a sense that the Cosmos is sending me a message.

I put that hat back on, and immediately the tide of the game turned. The rest is history. I don't believe in supernatural forces, but the feeling I got when she brought me back that hat still 'hives me chills.'

I have a pretty scary story.

*WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT*

I went to a party to watch UK in the final four a few years ago. I usually stay home to watch the games but since my friend knew these people, and they were cooking some good food, I went.

I arrive at the place with my friend, it was a nice house, the party was in the basement. I found a comfortable place to sit to watch the large TV. I was pumped! Suddenly in the middle of the game, the host (a female) and another person there ( a male) start loudly talking about the decor in the house, and even turned the game down. I couldn't leave, I didn't drive.:cry::cry:

This is the first time I've spoke openly about this night, and the last time I'll go to a party to watch a game.

As a UK fan, it's been my experience that the guys in the black and white shirts always tend to "play" for the other team.

I broke up with a girl that was a UL fan (I know, I know) after a UK/UL game for something similar...

Yeah, I missed the 1993 Final Four Michigan game in a similar fashion. My then live-in girlfriend had given a woman who was her boss and mentor a vague invitation to drop by sometime. So she does, with her 12-year-old daughter, just as that game is starting, making it clear that watching TV is not on the agenda. Missed the whole game, including OT. The memory from that night that still gives me PTSD -- the kid had gotten picked in school to be the lead in the play, Annie, and we had to listen to this talentless drone sing the entire score over and over while I knew the game was unspooling a room away. When I hear, "The sun will come up tomorrow..." my blood pressure spikes.

One odd thing I saw in Nashville one year was at the SEC tourney . An Alabama fan and his wife were dressed as a leprechauns . He introduced himself and had his wife turn around and she had no back in her skirt nice booty by the way .

My dad was a manager with an insurance company.

One Saturday, one of his agents randomly dropped by the house with his wife and kids.

It was a Saturday in 1984.

It was halftime of the Kentucky/Georgetown game.

The rest is history, of course. After this family showed up, UK shot 3/33 and I had to suffer through 9 more years without a Final Four.

I never saw that man again until 1997. Ran into him at the hospital where my dad was having surgery.

Dad died 7 days later.

And that's a true story.

P.S. - That last time I saw him was also the day Arizona beat us for the Title. But I blame him more for my dad's death than the ballgame.

I don't really have a specific story, but I think I get possessed by an evil force while watching some of the UK games. It only seems to happen when we lose though, which is kinda weird. When it happens there seems to be random objects that go flying through the air, not limited to but including remotes, desk chairs, food trays, etc. After it happens I get overcome by a sense of anger, that is followed by sadness, and then disappointment that tends to last until the start of the next game. It is a strange situation.

Nearly ruptured my larynx screaming at Keith Bogans for taking (and missing, of course) a terrible shot in the closing moments at Florida, and it sent our Boston Terrier scrambling for cover behind the couch. We wound up winning, but it took me 10 minutes of sweet talk and a jerky treat to get her from behind the couch.

On December 28, 2002 I was watching the Cats play the hated Cards. Midway through the second half I felt something in my throat and went to the bathroom. My throat was bleeding. I finished watching the game but went to the ER immediately afterwards still bleeding. An ENT called in to look was going to remove my tonsils but woke me up with the news hat I had cancer of the tonsil. After further test I learned that my cancer was Stage IV with the left tonsil, tongue, and lymph nodes involved. After chemo, radiation, and surgery I am still alive after almost 14 years. And we lost to the Cards that day.

Here's another one...sort of.

1993, was watching Western play in the Sweet Sixteen. This was the game against FSU, immediately preceding our game with Wake.

I was watching with my Mom. Mom, a WKU grad, got excited about some play and flipped over backwards in her rocking chair.

She lay there in pain, saying she hurt her back and she thought she needed to go to the hospital.

"Now?!?!?"

That was my response. Needless to say, we didn't go anywhere.

I was supposed to go to my sister's fiancee's bachelor party.

It was in Jersey. I was in Boston. The drive was maybe 5 hours.

It was that day in December '14 when our undefeated freight-train of a team was supposed to go to YUM and punish the red guys.

Fiancee's brother sends out an email the week before, asking that we all gather at 2 at his place to "get ready" - game starts at noon.

In other words, either I'm on the road while the game is happening, or I get up at 6 am on a Saturday so that I can make it to his house at noon (and I don't know the guy) and awkwardly ask to watch the game two hours before anybody else is there.

Or, you can do what I did, and explain that I just won't be able to make it until 6 (leaving at 2 from Boston with some illegal driving) for undisclosed reasons.

...right up until my mother (mother of the bride) gleefully informs the mother of the groom that I have to watch a big game on Saturday, and aren't boys so silly with their sports, and...

...so I was prepared for some kind of stern rebuke. I'd have watched the game regardless, but they end up inviting me to watch the game at 12 anyways, and the mother of the groom prepares chips and dip. The whole groom's party, comprised of mostly sports guys, is there watching it, having a generally fine time. The groom's brother, who organized the whole thing, is decidedly not a sports guy, and says half a dozen words to me the entire night.

If I had any sense of shame, it would've arisen at least a bit that day.

Alas, I do not. I enjoyed every minute.

That may be the freakin funniest breakup story I've ever heard.
About 4 years ago I had open heart surgery. My wife, son & daughter in law were in the recovery room waiting for me to come around. The Cats had played earlier in the evening while I was in surgery so obviously I missed the game. I don't remember this but my wife said when I came to & they removed the ventilator from my throat, I whispered to her in a low shaky whisper "did the Cats win".

Wow! It's so awesome! I've found others who are just as crazy as I am!

I CANNOT watch a game (doesn't matter which sport) that I am interested in with anyone who is not as dedicated as I am to watching the game.

My mother (who is a UK fan) is one who likes to talk through the games and ask silly questions and make silly statements and the whole time she is expecting me to answer her.... So Now my wife and I do not allow her to watch the games with us. My wife is not a big sports fan but she does respect the sanctity of the game enough to only bring up emergencies during the game.

The Superbowl is the only exception to the rule. We are big party people. We love to throw a huge Superbowl bash every year for all of our friends. And you always get the fringe attenders who know nothing about the sport and they only come for the food/party and they want to yap the whole time. We have made a whole room in our house that is dedicated to "those" type of attenders. The only problem is that they are not content talking with each other, they have to seemingly talk with everyone... like it would be rude of them if they left me out of their conversation... So I have learned to strategically move my living room around to where I can put my seat in front of the TV and limit any extra distractions and those rouge conversationalists.

You should send the therapy bills to your friend, he/she is at least partially responsible.

Alas, I don't have any cool stories - except maybe the 92 dook game
I was delivering pizzas at the time, listening to game on the radio. Got to the last house, was at the door when Wood's shot dropped - everyone was cheering. Was invited in to watch the last play of the game
You all know what happened - everyone cried, literally - was kind of good to not have to sit in my car alone, and cry. Was part of a group of UK fans instead
I did walk away from that one with a 25 dollar tip - would've rather had the win, though
