Unfortunately for our young assistants we will have to make the tournament before they get head jobs.
I'm OK with that because it means the program continues to improve and we are dancing again. Hopeful by then the program is a regular for the dance and up & coming coaches fight one another for the opportunity to coach at a successful power 5 school

Feel bad for coach young, but selfishly glad he sticks with us and continues to develop our guys (hopefully).

Amazing news! I pretty much thought he would be gone and that would be a big loss for us. We might lose him next year after we make the tournament though

Don't go to sleep thinking Jay Young will be back with us next year......I think there's a good chance he gets looked at quite seriously by Fairfield as their current AD wanted to hire him at Central Conn State as HC

Are we sure he even wanted the job. With the success Pike had at SB, he probably had chances to leave then and didn't. Maybe he just likes being Pike's assistant.

I wouldn't bet on that at all. Hobbs and young have been finalists for jobs before and Rutgers has continued it's upward climb..smaller schools take notice of that. If anything, their stock has risen.

Does seem a little strange. When Pike leaves for a higher level job you pass on his long time assistant. Boal's leaves for a less prestigious job after only being there 3 years and you promote his assistant? I understand he has HC experience but does seem like a change in approach. I can't see how Jay Young was less of a candidate this time around if interested.

Boals is an Ohio guy who is an alum of Ohio University. He wanted that job when he left Ohio State, but Ohio hired someone else. Now that he had a few years of experience as a head coach, his alma mater called and he wasn't going to say "no."

Less prestigious job? I'd rather be coaching in the Mac than the American East. That East Division of the MAC is no joke. Buffalo is humming along, Bowling Green keeps improving and Kent State is usually competitive.

That's what I think as well. Tough sell to your fans that you are hiring a Rutgers assistant when you have been as bad as we've been for years. And yes I fully believe in Pike but the average fan of another school (esp non B1G) has no idea what the hell is going on at Rutgers other than we're bad.

nothing to do with rutgers or not rutgers. Jay young basically got screwed.

Pikiell got hired by Jim Fiore. Fiore was the AD up until 2013 when he got into some trouble and was forced to leave. i believe, Fiore and young, had an unwritten understanding that when pikiell leaves young takes the reins. Well when fiore was forced to leave that all went up in smoke.

So SBU had a choice hire a women within or hire a flashy new ad. So they of course hired the flashy new AD. the new AD comes in and three years later pikeill and company get to NCAA tournament and pikiell takes rutgers. Now the new AD has a decision to make, promote Young or make a flashy hire to up SBU's profile and his as well. Pikiell's tenure bought the program 1 or 2 years before the need to go back to NCAA tournament. so they make the flashy hire in jeff boals. Well boals back fires. not only does he not get back to ncaa tournament but he leaves. This puts new AD in flux. does he promote within giving them the best opportunity to win right now by keeping the current roster in ford or make a flashy hire risking losing players and wait another 3 or 4 years. Well they need to win right now so they hire within. It also didnt help that new AD was quoted in Newsday saying his expectations were getting at large bids. You cant go from "we expect at large bids" to "we havent been to the NCAA tournament in 6 years." SBU hasnt even played in an AE championship game since pikiell left. Pikiell went to the championship 5 out of his last 6 years. This new AD needs to win now.

Ultimately, I believe that the new AD wanted what boals did and get the hell out of dodge ASAP. Unfortunately, by hiring boals he hurt himself. Young should have been hired the same day pikiell put in his notice.

self preservation at its best.

the beauty of being at a asmall school is that everyone knows everyone. Majority of SBU fans know and wanted Young back in 2016. Selling Young would not be an issue.

However people were open to hiring a big name. They are a little baffled by the ford hire.

You are dead on!! So funny! Pikes leaves SB after 11 years of building a program that had nothing & the AD doesn’t hire Young who was responsible for helping recruit some of the best played in SB history. Not to mention year in and year out ranked top defense in the league. Why you ask, because the AD wanted to make it about him. Hires a search firm that ironically got him the AD job at SB.

Young was never going back to SB with the same AD in place! Jay is confident in his ability & he Loves Rutgers and is loyal to Pikiell. I’m not saying he won’t leave for a head job, but he wasn’t leaving Rutgers to go back to SB!

Someone needs to tell the AD that the American East does not get at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament. It is a one bid league.

Perhaps I was not clear. Pike is there for 10+ years and leaves for the Rutgers job and Boals is there for 3 and leaves for Ohio. The comparison was between Rutgers and Ohio not Ohio and SB. Presumably Pike and staff had accomplished much more than Boals and his staff. Yet when Pike leaves a member of his staff is passed over while when Boals leaves his assistant gets the HC job.

When you wrote "Boal's leaves for a less prestigious job" you were not talking about Ohio?
