The first step to an 8 team national playoff should be either the elimination or penalty to schools who schedule Division I Sub Division teams. No more Mercer’s, Arkansas States, etc. . . on schedules.
First round playoffs should occur the 3rd weekend in December. The game is played at the school who is highest ranked. 1 versus 8; 2 versus 7; 3 versus 6; and 4 versus 5. All conference championship games would be the first weekend of December.
The semi and final games would occur just like now.
Each conference champion, that has a conference championship game, is automatic. There would be 3 at large teams chosen by the committee.
A team who loses, their season ends. No bowl game.
