Stephen A. Smith is an idiot. He is also the highest paid on air personality at ESPN. It is his job to say outlandish things to get clicks. This time, the outlandish statement went over the line and stepped into racial insensitivity. But because Stephen A is a minority himself, he’ll get a free pass.
ESPN is a huge cluster17 and the sports that they cover (or maybe they shape them) are following right along behind them.
I keep dreaming that guys like Stephen A and Olberman get kicked off their platforms and I can read and listen to sports shows again. I get really tired of hearing them try to over "outlandish" or out "woke" everyone else.
Is The Sports Reporters Sunday morning show still on? Those were the shows you watched to get all the non sports Sporting World issues discussed in an adult manner... even the serious stuff like racism.

I don’t care for Stephen so let’s start there. But it is also absurd that you can’t answer the question of whether it’s good for baseball that he’s the No. 1 guy by pointing out he doesn’t speak the language of the country he plays in without it being labeled as racist.
To me he threw out a fact that wasn’t racially motivated. We’ve created a culture where we have created a standard that no one can live up to and we are watering down actually racist things but everyone trying to label everyone as a racist.
If I’m answering the question I don’t think it matters too much as he should be popular based on his exploits, not what language he speaks. Nomomani was a long time ago and it didn’t hurt him or MLB.

Nope, John Saunders sadly died suddenly and it was canceled several years ago. It was one espn show I never missed as it gave me a chance to listen to Mitch Albom.
Stephen A Smith barely speaks English himself. What an incredibly stupid and tone deaf thing to say. He deserves all the grief he is getting for that.

It's absolutely racist. Many of the "faces of the game" currently are Latinos who don't speak English and require interpreters. Why didn't he say that about one of them?
Woke journalists and activists love to brow beat everyone about diversity, inclusion, and systematic racism. Those are usually the racist ones. I actually have respect for Stephen A because he allowed himself a break from social justice to reveal to the world who he really is. And his apology is BS. He should have said it was stupid and he was sorry, period, but he couldn't stop there. Every single daytime sports talk show has sucked goat nuts for decades now. Local and national, radio and television. All of em are a waste of space and have been for years and years.

I guess decades have gone by since I had time to watch. I used to love watching ESPN SportsCenter when the actual sports themselves and participants were the discussion. Woke wasn't the only thing that killed the fun of watching. Like you said, it was losing ground the entire time.

The PC crowd can cringe all they want. SAS should've known what he'd get hit with over it too. But he's absolutely correct in saying people who love the American past time will not relate as well to a star that can't speak English. People won't hate Ohtani. They'll still think he's great (And he is), but he won't get the same love Mike Trout does. Just how it is.
Last night was one long Ohtani infomercial. People everywhere wearing his jersey. I'd say he's been accepted fine. The issue I have with the SAS comments is that he singled out Ohtani but not Latino players in similar circumstances.
It's more likely that Mike Trout love is due to the fact that he's a decent human being combined with being the best baseball player alive today. But Tatis, Guerrero, Acuna, etc, all get just as much love.

Baseball is our pastime but it's beloved in many other countries too. I doubt Ohtani feels like he owes anyone an apology....he made it just like Trout did....nothing is given to you at that level of baseball.
