Stephen A boasted confidently the Heat might as well go home since they would lose tonight against Boston. The big blowhard was wrong again. What an idiot.
He's not paid for being right. He's paid for being a blowhard.

woke
VERB
  1. past of wake.

  1. alert to injustice and discrimination in society, especially racism:
It’s the most despicable degrading term used in the world today. The defense of that statement is quite beyond the scope of this board, but it is definitely insulting.

ESPN decided a long time ago to make their anchors, commentators, reporters, more important that the news they were reporting. Out side of a UK game or maybe a NFL game I can’t watch them anymore. I will say the 30 for 30 series is one of the best things ever made.

If the flaming Liberal has given up on ESPN you know it's bad people. I kid. In all seriousness, no one, liberal or conservative, turns a sports network to hear about anything other than sports. I think most of is can agree on that.

Disagree. Woke as it is used today is definitely an insult

I've read that the usage of "woke" as an insult began life as blacks making fun of whites who pretend to understand black outrage. Similarly "PC" began life as an inside joke by liberals about liberal one-upmanship. Someone who is more liberal than thou. Etc. The right-wing ran with both and diluted their original meanings to turn both into a generic term for liberal. As a liberal, I couldn't care less. It's a useful sonar: when someone uses it, it just tells me all I need to know about the person who uses it.

Are you saying that the truth is only allowed on certain channels, forums, or venues? Since the participants in sports are comprised of a cross section of the human race, I am not sure why you think certain things don't apply. Unfortunately, all people don't have the same access and means to control the various news outlets as others might have, so they use the platforms they are given to present their feelings and opinions. Our country has a history of wanting people to shut up and only do the things that "we want them to do". If you are an entertainer, that is all I want from you. If you are an athlete, that is all I want from you. These people might simply appear to you/us as only what we desire them to be, but they are more than what they do to entertain us. They have found their voices and a means to be heard. The fact that you/we don't want to hear them is our problems and not theirs.

Not appropriate for the board. The question is whether it is a degrading term. It is so disgusting, I wouldn’t even call you woke. It is the most degrading term I have seen perverted in the English language in over 60 years. It has no place in basketball.

What I think is none of your business and I see no evidence you would be capable of understanding it. Keep your racist bigoted thoughts out of my face.

Fwiw, the term has actually been around since as far back as the 1930s, when it was first coined to describe awareness of social inequality issues and racial injustice toward African-Americans. But it wasn’t used much in the ensuing decades until its popularity suddenly EXPLODED in the last 10 to 15 years (ie. the Woke Movement).

It’s true that many conservatives now see it as a perjorative and term of ridicule (as we see daily on this board), but that sure ain’t its origins.

Let’s not go over the top. It’s insulting, and I’m really tired of being insulted by conservatives but that’s a bit of a reach.

Thanks. It's still a useful bit of self-identification by the people who sneer it. One ping to rule them all, so to speak.

First, you assume too much. It’s laughable. Second, you didn’t grow up in the 60’s.

I was called "woke" and "cupcake" for defending an older black gentleman at a gas pump. He was taking a long time until I realized he had a disability so I got out to help help him. Got into a shouting match will a couple in a Pontiac Grand Am. I thought I heard them use a racist term and I snapped. Didn't have my hearing aids in but it enraged me. As a conservative I now realize how it sounds and makes people feel so I won't be using it. Although I did call those people "boomers", immature but it pissed them off.
