The team has been a disappointment since the Battle of Atlantis in the beginning of the year. A few good games and a lot of bad losses where they looked dysfunctional against better teams. Although the coaching staff shares a large part of the blame, the team has had myriad problems including:
(1) Rebounding- it's been below average, and UConn has been last in the AAC in offensive rebounding most of the year. As a result, transition offense has been very sporadic and UConn has been forced to play a halfcourt game by most competent foes on the schedule.
(2) The UConn big men, outside of Shonn Miller (and Steve Enoch in occasional flashes when he plays), have been completely ineffective on offense. Brimah and Phil Nolan and Facey are not even modest offensive threats, except Brimah when he is lobbed to, and good teams shut that down and dare Brimah to post up. Once Miller started getting double teamed the team didn't react well, and Miller's 0.5 assist per game average indicates he is not likely to beat people passing out of double teams.
(3) Point guard has been a problem all year. Gibbs cannot run a halfcourt offense. Jalen Adams can, but he has been extremely inconsistent, and the last couple games he was playing hurt. As a result, Cassell has even been pressed into action lately, and like Gibbs, his strength mainly seems to be shooting 3s and not much else.
(4) The guards as a group are very poor finishers. The team has had extraordinary problems making layups and bunnies, and other than Jalen Adams, nobody on the team can competently take the ball to the hole and either get fouled or get off what looks like a decent shot.
(5) In close games, where crisp execution on offense and defensive stops were needed, UConn had not had very much of either. The offense has looked comically bad in late game pressure situations.
(6) Basketball IQ and shot selection and ballhandling have been problems for 2 years running.
