Respect...

I'll respect that over #NBA #DraftNight #Klutchmebytheballs #NoBennies
Any day.

Wasn't my first choice - so win win for me - just wish Mitch would learn how to handle business without looking a fool...

I applaud Scott Drew for being man enough to put out that statement. Just mentioning the fact that you follow Jesus Christ will subject you to all kinds of ridicule in today's America. Look no further than Rupp Rafters for proof of that fact.

I would love for our new coach to share those values, as well as commit to building the best and most successful basketball program possible. The two are not, contrary to what many seem to believe, mutually exclusive.

Coaching is about building people as much as it is about the Xs and Os of the sport. This process ultimately helps to build a winning culture and a winning program. Look at the recent ascent of the Kentucky baseball program. I hope Coach Ming can keep it going.

Mitch Barnhart wasn't recruiting Scott Drew so that he could have a "church buddy". Those who choose to go down that road are showing their immaturity.

That said, I didn't think Drew would be a fit here, at least not right now. But that is because of what this fanbase will demand from the next coach - not because of a lack of coaching ability on his part.

Drew would have been a GREAT fit at UK. I’m amazed at the arrogance of some UK fans (certainly not all) who think a man would not leave everything to coach at UK. Thus, It must be “low T or his faith.”

I’ll support whoever the next coach is. But, Drew was just a younger version of Jay Wright. If you wanted Wright then Drew is just a younger version.

At the end of the search, UK will be okay. However, I do think this hire comes from the 2nd tier of coaches.

Why are you so bitter? Drew is a very good coach. And he happens to be Christian.
Nothing wrong with that, but Mitch obviously covets that , and if they are such good buddies , how does he know this wouldn't be the result? Just like he wasn't aware of Billy Clyde's issues. He doesn't have a grasp. I had no problem with Drew being at Kentucky.

Seems like a great guy and decent coach. But let's be real, it takes a real ******* and a good coach to coach here! Pitino and Cal are two of the biggest aholes around and they succeeded. Tubby was too nice of a guy to last long, Billy G. just couldn't coach, Joe B. was a good coach but also too nice of a guy to last for a long period. This job chews you up and spits you out, so Drew would not have lasted long no matter how he coached and God must have told him that! I think Billy Donovan is too nice of a guy; the biggest aholes in the room are Pitino and Pearl

UK fans trashing Drew for this response are sad and disillusioned folks. After fourteen years of Cal, so many UK fans think that all coaches are like Cal, chasing the money and big-time. That is especially true for all the new "Cal built UK" fans who don't remember UK was fine before him and will be back after him.

I warned before that a coach like Cal has no loyalty. He left Memphis bereft of talent and was among the first to drag his entire recruiting class away when he left the Tigers.

But there are other men though who understand and appreciate it when a school takes a chance on them and helps them up the ladder. They also realize that family and home are more important than getting a huge raise that the government will mostly take anyway. They understand that enough is enough, and their $4, 5 or 6M is plenty. Scott Drew is apparently one of those men who live that way and believe that way. So cut the Branch Davidian crap. It just makes the UK fanbase look childish and petty.

UK welcomed a man like Cal and all of his recruits from Memphis, and cheered when he could deliver immediate success. Even if it showed his disloyalty to his prior employer. And now that decision is coming home to roost as Cal robs the Cats of every player he wants to drag to Hog Heaven.

Just remember, every other coach is not like Cal. Drew is one of those who are different. And I suspect Hurley may be as well.

Gotta disagree with you. I do agree being our basketball coach requires confidence, and enough emotional maturity to ignore the crazy stuff. (The craziest people are also usually the loudest critics.)

However, this does not require people to be a$&holes. I know many good leaders who are also good people. They’re in different kinds fishbowls (most of their organizations are not on television every week.) But, they have lots of pressure and plenty of critics while treating people with respect.

No offense, but just weirds me out to see that he puts Jesus first “in the program.”
Exactly, and for all the people whining in the Christianity thread, this is what we meant. Presumably all of our coaches have been Christians. Certainly they have all progressed to be at some point. No one cared. Person Scott Drew can also be whatever he wants and prioritize whatever he wants. COACH Scott Drew needs to put winning basketball games above all else, and he doesn’t, and he doesn’t want to. All of that is still fine, and I’m glad he himself realized it made him a bad fit at a non religious university.

Best for all he did not come here. Was not going to fit.

He would have done well here. I have zero doubts about that, but 22 years is a lot to walk away from. He’s now basically Baylor’s version of Mark Few or Coach K, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Loyalty should be rewarded.

Lol you don't know nearly enough about the man to say this. You're just giving him the benefit of the doubt because he is outwardly Christian.
You don’t either. So let his statement stand. I’m a believer in Jesus. Definitely not perfect.

Have been a UK fan and general basketball fan for 55 years. Wish we could win a National Championship every year. Happy when we win, sad when we lose. However, foremost in my life, I am a Christian who is not perfect but forgiven. I applaud Coach Drew for recognizing that God comes first, then family, and somewhere down the list, basketball. I was thinking he might come here to coach and be successful but he has more pressing priorities. At my job, I tried to give my best but my Saviour and family were always much more important. He could have been successful here and still been a fine moral example to students and fans. These two are not mutually exclusive. I will pray for his continued success both on and off the court. A class act
Best for all he did not come here. Was not going to fit.

Wow you like many on this board and social media in general just can't wait to be offended. I said nothing about him being a Christian. Stop thinking you know the thoughts of others.

I don't think he would fit in because he and his family seem to be uncomfortable with the insanely bright 24/7 spotlight that is the head coach job at UK. It was just not going to work. There is nothing wrong with him staying where he feels comfortable and is loved. Good for him and good for us.
Sorry, misunderstood your post. My apologies as I did not mean to stir up anyone. I will delete my post.

A statement like that tells you it was probably not a good fit at UK, or Louisville (duh!), or just about anywhere else. He'll retire there, a la Few at Gonzaga. Some matches are just perfect.
