What I learned most from Rhule's pc was I finally got a good explanation why Haarberg is missing wide open receivers. Per Rhule, HH is throwing to a spot where he thinks they are rather than "intentionally" throwing it directly to the receivers. Hey! HH, stop over thinking it and just throw the ball to your receiver.
Doesn't help that his footwork is horrible.

Rhule better be bringing in a QB coach.

Why is Purdy always hurt.

No excuse for that last interception, run the ball motherpucker and get bowl eligible.

Tell me or show me I’m wrong? I’ll wait.
Hey, friend, just trying to make it easier on you. Change your name and you never have to think of some snarky comment again. It'll all be captured in the name. Isn’t that enticing?

Honest question… who on the defensive side of the ball were Rhule’s friends? In general, which hires were friend hires? Satterfield, obviously, but who else? I honestly don’t know, and maybe the answer is 6 coaches… but just curious here.
I think everyone on the defensive staff had coached under him at some point other than White, who a player when he coached at UCLA. Not sure if they are actually friends.

O line and D did their job. Remember when people wanted Raiola gone earlier this season?

Still do. Raiola isn't great and it's taken injuries to remove poor performers from their starting positions. That's happenstance, not coaching.

God for bid we can’t roll Sims out there can we?😩
I actually had the thought today that they could put Sims in there just for one series and only run the ball. No passing. No matter what. Then I remembered that he turns the wrong way on 25% of our running plays....

D has been solid all season. O line has been held together with spit and glue and has improved. RB's have improved. EJ has at least. Young WR's have played well. Been blocking great and running wide open. All our QB's have regressed. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see why we are losing these close games. QB's. Period.
I think our receivers are not doing our QB's any favors out there. Not going to name names, but a few of those Ints were preventable had our guys come back to the ball or run sharper routes. I think our young guys should get better with time. Fidone still has chance to be OK as well.

5 of the top 8 offenses in the country are being led by 1st year OCs

to answer Coach Rhule's question of "when has that worked?" re: firing & "starting over"
Are you saying that those teams have comparable offensive talent to Nebraska?

Gee. And here I thought his flying right elbow was causing the ball to fly high and wide. I’ll give Rhule one thing. He doesn’t throw his players under the bus.

No. Obviously.

I’m saying firing ineffective people and hiring effective ones happens all over the world, including in college football, every single day/year and that Rhule’s comment was idiotic

“start over with new language?” Um, yea, Coach.

I'll give the young WRs a pass. They are true freshman. Our QBs have been in CFB for 2 to 3 years. They are making rookie mistakes every week.

5 of those teams have heisman level QBs and were likely top 20 last year.

firing Mickey was a massive mistake. Trey Palmer was the most dynamic player since Ameer.
Joseph choked his wife, Palmer wasn’t staying in Lincoln and his play with the Bucs is a cut above the favorable draft analysis he saw before he called an agent.

So I just got through reading the written version of what Rhule said at the press conference.

I will probably watch it as well, as more is communicated via video than the words, but I didn't want to inflect more bias than I already have. So, I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt.

As I'm reading this, Matt is sort of all over the place, defending this, and that, and he's picking out a play here and there. I get he doesn't want to lay this on the players and make their confidence worse.. at least that is what I am thinking his reasoning is.

As I'm about half way through, I'm thinking geez, this is a pro style offense.. you have to know if the D is in man, or zone, or faking man or faking zone.. and based on that decision matrix, know who to throw the ball to.

It's way too complicated, especially for a 3rd string guy who wasn't even running the plays the week before.

Then I read this thread, and this comment stands out to me.
I really dislike this quote from HCMR:
"If we keep it simple, we're not going to be a competitive team at the highest level"

You know what will help you become competitive at the highest level? Not missing out on 15 extra practices and a game at the end of the year!!! Run the dang ball 3 times on 1st and G at the 5, either score a TD or kick a FG, and make Maryland try to drive the field with 2+ mins left with 80K+ fans screaming. You have to get to a bowl game, period!! If your OC isn't smart enough to make the simple (CORRECT) calls when needed, you need to move on to a better OC who has common sense. There will always be second guessing of coaches, but you can't teach someone common sense.

I have to say, it is too complicated. and he is right, it is on him. But this baloney quoted above is kind of garbage.

We aren't there yet.. we are just trying to get bowl eligible, not perfecting ourselves for the playoffs.

It's like teaching a kid the guitar.. you have to make progress with what they CAN do.. not demand they run some complex chord progression that isn't in their ability yet. So, you HURT the team, and players by running something more complicated than it needs to be.

I get that the OC and other staff want their reps, (at playcalling etc) but I think what I read, tells me that the coaching staff is not on the same page with the players.

I do think Matt Rhule cares and is trying, but to use my guitar teacher example, he's asking Timmy to move from an A minor 7 to a D major sus 2, when Timmy can really only play Smoke on the Water, and Smoke on the Water is GOOD ENOUGH to get through the music recital (i.e. the football game)

If it were me, I'd dumb down the offense, and re-dedicate myself to the running game, like he told everyone we were going to do.

You have to have an identity and be in sync with that as a staff..

you can't give lip service to the press and fans (and players see this) then behind the scenes try to be something else.

Gonna watch the press conference now, (if I can make it through it) as I don't want to say Rhule sounded panicked from the text without hearing it first.

Sorry so long.

All 3 of our QBs are very intelligent guys. They can learn the offense but I agree that 3rd and goal pass play was asking too much.

Matt spent a bunch of time explaining the play.. everybody runs this play, it's a standard play.. just execution, etc etc.

so he's diverting from the question of WHY that play when you're needing to get at least 3 points. All he offers is that Satt wanted to run a pick play, (with all receivers going to the same area? my eyes roll).

I'm sure our guys are smart enough, it's just going to take a few years in the system to get to where we can operate like that.

So he's focused on building, not the bowl game. that is the bottom line.

He then talks about how he just wants guys to just play and not think.. now I'm like laughing, it's like he is talking out both sides..

Matt means well, but he's doing a lot of salesmanship type of talking here.

I was always concerned about Matt being able to handle the pressure here.. he'll be fine this year, but as this continues to move forward (in my eyes, without a cohesive identity plan) I think his ability to sell this out both sides of his mouth will get harder and harder.

There are lots of examples where he contradicts himself.. and when that happens, he's covering for people, selling a narrative, or trying to explain away a critique.

I'm 50/50 on whether I believe the silver tongue or not.. because of the contradictions already, but I assume most are still all in on it.

At least he’s willing to take the time to explain the play. No doubt he wishes they had called a different play. It’s easy to second guess a play call when it’s not executed. That wasn’t a complicated play. I just think they might have been over confident in our WRs and QB’s ability to execute it. Something quick over the middle seems a higher percentage play for a college QB.

agree, but why not take the question head on?? why go around it to try to baffle your audience? see, to me, that is part of the salesmanship going on. He doesn't want to answer the actual question.. but prefaces his opening remarks saying he's 'always straight with you guys' (to that effect towards the media).

that is a contradiction right there.

One point he says Chubba is hurt.

Later he says Chubba is healthy.

What he really didn't want to do was comment or commit to Chubba playing.. so saying Chubba was hurt because he hasn't played much (huh?) doesn't make a lot of sense.. then later he says, you have to play to be better at QB.

So for each part of his answers, you have to search for the context he is trying to explain, because on their own, he contradicts himself non-stop on this pc.

He’s far more willing to take questions and accept responsibility than any coach we’ve had. It’s kind of hard to criticize his answers too much.

As far as Purdy goes, I think his statement is fairly accurate. IF my interpretation of his situation is correct he has a problem that will require off season surgery but it doesn’t affect his play. I’m guessing he has an inguinal hernia (why they say groin). Non athletes live with those often for years without opting for surgery. I’ve had surgery for that. It didn’t cause me any discomfort presurgery unless I picked up something over 90 lbs.

Every coach who blabbers about ' taking responsibility' should submit their contracts to being incentive based. But they and their agents never seriously do.
So you make bad calls that prevent a bowl game and want to really take responsibility?
Then give up what you cost the university.

So then don't use that statistic.

I don't care to defend Rhule and that staff with much vigor coming off the last game. But it comes down to philosophy and it is sound. In a developmental program, you stay the course. It's worked for him in the past and he believes it is more than likely going to work again. He'll make a change if and when he needs to.

I take responsibility or it's on me are meaningless word salads. Typical coach speak.
Now, someone ask the head coach how he takes responsibility, you'll not get a satisfactory answer.

Agreed. But I'm probably going to become a HH apologist at some point. I look at him as a first year QB. He's had two years worth of lame duck QB coaches who didn't give two sh*ts about developing a long term prospect. Whipple wouldn't even work with him and even kept him out of QB meetings. Even this year, he was playing some WR.

So basically, HH is just two years older, but still a very raw prospect out of a C-2 school. I think there's still hope for the kid.

Seriously? Whenever things don’t work out for you in your job, should your contract be incentive based? Or do you never get it wrong?

I get that they make tons of money and it feels like they are taking candy from a baby, but if they are sincerely making an effort and coming up short, should they be penalized? Would you accept that kind of punitive approach in your place of work?

Good luck keeping ANY coaches, let alone finding a top notch coach to want to come into that environment.

Rather than posting emotionally, think it through before hitting send.

Oh no, I take FULL RESPONSIBILITY!!

The normal market already takes care of this. There are guys where I work who I am sure make quite a bit more than me and you know what? They deserve to. They have talent and expertise that I don't possess.
College football salaries are a runaway train. The Jimbo Fisher situation bears that out.

And he's banged up. If he was healthy, we probably win the last two.

Now on the flip side, if you are going to run the QB, they are going to get banged up and you need to develop some depth.

Your last point I fully agree with. The money is insane and I wish it were curtailed. But the market is what it is. And if we want to be competitive, we have to pay top dollar. If we start producing incentive laden contracts, the next guy will be worse than Rhule, guaranteed. And I like Rhule and think he will be fine. But if he isn’t the guy, and we have incentive laden contracts, who will come here?
