Starting Lineup Conundrum

The Platoon was brilliant. It was a brilliant coaching move, and it produced brilliant results. I want it every year! But, I think you probably have to have a pretty unique and hard-to-come-by roster for it to really work well. I wouldn't be ready to put a label like that on UK's roster next season - yet, anyway.

I agree. It worked great until the Poythress injury removed our depth.

For it to work you need 10 good players. But more than that you also need the talent gap between the 2nd 5 and the first 5 to be narrow.

PG Carr or Alvarado (l believe we get one of the 2, I would be happy with either).

2. Grady.
3. Allen.
4. Collins. I think he has a Jackson like impact next year. But there could be a surprise here like Bagley or Gurrier. If that’s the case I could see Ware’s minutes fade as the year goes on.
5. Oscar.

Rotation
CJ
Toppin
Ware
Tyty

This is contingent on Mintz and Brooks leaving but the way our luck has been with retention I don’t think anyone can fault me for leaving them out.
I just don't see Allen in the starting lineup next season. I think his game will expand and he'll certainly contribute but I think Cal will go with Grady, TyTy, and Fredrick/Carr/Bagley.

Grady- Senior/Grad Transfer
Fredrick- Junior

Brooks- Junior
Oscar- Junior

6th Man
Toppin- Junior

Ware- Soph
Collins- Freshman
Hopkins- Freshman

I can remember way back to the OAD era at Kentucky.
All I can see right now is a college veteran movement.
It's going to be hard to keep both Allen and Toppin out of the starting lineup at this point.
Is this the upperclassman dream scenario in the transfer portal era so far??
You really think Allen will get significant playing time? I dont see that happening.

It isn't a dream scenario because they've never played together. Let's go back to the Bahamas.

I think if we get Washington and Mintz comes back, Cal goes with his usual 3 guard (perimeter skilled guys) with those two and Grady at the 3.

I am not sure about the 4 spot.

I figure Cal will play two bigs with Collins and Tshiebwe, because they are the most talented forwards we have (at least on paper).

The problem there is that lineup doesn’t fit well in a 4 out system like Cal has said (according to Tshiebwe) he wants to play this season.

But really, unless Brooks or Toppin improve their perimeter skills greatly in the offseason, we don’t have a stretch 4 that would make the 4 out system work.

If we get Washington and Alvarado, Allen will not be starting. I really doubt he will be starting even we if we not get those guys. Unless he has improved in a big way he will not play any more than he did last year. Frederick can do more than Allen and he is a better shooter. Grady, even more so. jmo

Wishful thinking!! There is no way that Cal isn't going to start some freshmen. There is a reason why we are known as the NBA Express and it isn't because the freshmen ride the pine.

Cal's oldest team combined with the most returning players in years is creating this conundrum. One the BBN has been dying to see.

I think the players who give us the best chance of winning each game should play . Freshman earn their spot ok. Don’t earn it sit until they do earn it. Anything else hurts team chemistry which I suspect was one of the problems this tear . The other problem being we just weren’t very good .

I think Toppin has that PJ sophomore jump and starts. If not right away before the year is out

I also agree the Platoon could work this year. I would of course tamper the minutes cause some guys need to be on the court. But at the base of it. With the depth it can happen!

Cal will never go back to the Platoon system. Opposing coaches are using it against him on the recruiting trail.

He’ll rebrand the platoon and do it in incremental substitutions rather than five for five. We get the pieces in place and we’re gonna beast out

If Allen starts, we will struggle. He’s an off-the-bench guy and will definitely get his minutes.

I don't think the coaching staff is in desperation about a point guard but I do think the fan base is
Do you think they are secure in PG and a backup? Tyty starting and Mintz as the backup or Alvarado in the mix?

I think we will be fine with Washington and Mintz. Washington seems to be better than I expected, based on recent hype. Mintz is a capable backup PG and a solid SG. Add those two to Fredrick, Grady, and Allen and we should be pretty decent at the 1-3 spots.

Who’s gonna start?
I don’t even know who will be on our roster for certain.
is there a deadline in the transfer portal?
If not, there could be surprises yet to come.

How in the hell did we just have the worst season in school history to you guys talking about platooning and being stacked. Did y’all not just see what happened and learned from it?

I hope he platoons early. I also hope he pulls out a Tubby strategy of having more than one ball handler bring the ball up the court to share the load. Re-access during Camp Cal in preparation for league play.
