This whole situation is 17ing stupid. Medical professionals can’t even agree on whether a mask helps or not and we have the city of Starkville trying to make up for lost revnue by instituting unconstitutional fines. I guess I’ll just keep buying groceries with Instacart and buy everything else online.

What argument could any of you argumentative folks possibly have against this? Good grief. It's just common sense. All of the well-run businesses have already been doing this.
And no, it doesn't help you all that much, but you wear the mask for everyone else.

Making us wear masks for a short period of time to help potentially mitigate a deadly virus? The nerve of them. Next thing you know they’re going to make us drive slower in construction zones.

The other thing that makes me laugh at the whiners... they’ve been bitching and moaning about “open it up” for weeks and now we’re trying to do that in a responsible manner and they’re still bitching and moaning.

And who among us knows how to properly wear and remove a mask? Have you not been paying attention? If we're required to wear masks, then we need TRAINING (and government supplied masks) on how to not end up contaminating ourselves. The results of us not wearing masks correctly could overwhelm hospitals. We all know how to drive slower.

Here’s the crux, and where I can see people taking exception to this.

“You give up just a little of your freedom and decision making because it is for the “greater good”.

Will these masks prevent the spread of this disease? We don’t know, but it is now mandated that you comply because you cannot be trusted to make the right decision. We “the government” know what is best for you.”

I've never understood how police could on their own decide which laws to enforce and which ones not to enforce. Their job is to enforce the laws, not decide which are good and which are not good.

Google 42 U.S. Code Annotated Section 1983 and you might understand !

I know I’m getting deep here, but You could also call this “stressed populace syndrome”.

Wait for strenuous times when most of the population is in disarray. Remove a little freedom/decision making at each interval because it makes people feel “safer” and well taken care of. It is a cumulative effect, but at some point there are very few freedoms left and the power resides in the government.

Are they planning on supplying the masks? It's not as easy to get them as I thought.

I’m sure they’ll do like other cities have and say anything covering the face is fine.

Billy Bob’s bandanna he wears in the hayfield and hasn’t washed in a year will be completely safe and sanitary though.

Good point. Notice you aren't hearing "Flatten the curve" every other sentence now? It's because the whole thing didn't come close to overwhelming the health care system as the "experts" predicted. Now it's we may have to wait for a vaccine. The goal posts keep moving and not for the better. At this rate, unless everyone stops having coughs and sore throats, we might as well move back into caves.

I’m not a conspiracy theory kind of guy, but this mask ordinance reeks of desperation to fill city coffers more than part of a well thought out, well-intentioned strategic plan to fight the spread of a virus that has infected a grand total of 34 people in Starkville. I work around 980 unmasked (unless we have to work within six feet of each other) people every single day and there has not been one case of COVID-19 contracted inside our facility. Keep your distance. Cover your cough. Stay home if you are sick. It’s simple.

It was in the reopening plan they laid out today. We all won’t have to where them but all employees at opening businesses are required to

I not a lawyer either, but I imagine a lawsuit against this would get about as far as one if I sued because I’m required to wear pants in public.

Fat finger hit the one instead of the three. It is 42 United States Code Annotated Section 1983.

Every person who, under color of any statute, ordinance, regulation, custom, or usage, of any State or Territory or the District of Columbia, subjects, or causes to be subjected, any citizen of the United States or other person within the jurisdiction thereof to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured by the Constitution and laws, shall be liable to the party injured in an action at law, suit in equity, or other proper proceeding for redress, except that in any action brought against a judicial officer for an act or omission taken in such officer’s judicial capacity, injunctive relief shall not be granted unless a declaratory decree was violated or declaratory relief was unavailable. For the purposes of this section, any Act of Congress applicable exclusively to the District of Columbia shall be considered to be a statute of the District of Columbia.

I don’t know. But if it’s still here when we get to May 10 and they tell me to wear a mask in public, I don’t have a problem wearing a mask in public. It's not some slippery slope to deprive us of anything. It’s a public health measure to try to keep people healthy and safe. It’s OK to be considerate of the health of others.

Some of you guys can just take the tin foil off your heads and refold it into a mask of some sorts.

Lol really? How about the very common practice of cops taking steroids and then arresting folks for drugs.

Why not stop the sale of tobacco?
If your OK with this government mandated “Health and safety” initiative, what about the government banning the sale of Cokes? Are you ok with the government mandating exercise? You know obesity is killing a lot more people than covid, it’s for your health, smile and run. I’m just curious what “healthy measures” people are OK with the government forcing them to abide by.

Let’s play a game where we replace the matter of “making people wear a mask” with “making people buy homeless people food” or even “give $10 to the beggar at the interstate exit”. Being FORCED to do something doesn’t sit well with some people.
But some people don’t have a problem being forced to wear seatbelts or motorcycle helmets so...

Vote was 5-2. Starkville has 7 wards, each represented by 1 alderman. Mayor only gets a vote if one alderman abstains and there is a tie vote among the other 6. I have a good idea why so many of you are attacking the Mayor, though.

If someone walks into a business without a mask on - is the business supposed to enforce the rule? I would think a business would not want to turn away a customer - especially now.

I understand Memphis is RECOMMENDING employers to require employees to wear mask. I can't find any news story that says customers must wear mask.

Some stores are requiring mask to enter the store but mask isn't a Memphis city requirement.

At this point, I'm starting to think of masks like motorcycle helmets. We shouldn't have to legislate wearing them. You'd think people would have the sense and be thoughtful enough of others to wear them. But after a walk around my neighborhood, I'm beginning to think otherwise. Plus, it not like masks only work one way. If worn correctly, they can be personally protective.

How so? They’ve banned salt in restaurants in NYC and are limiting the size of drinks you can order. How do you feel about that?

I know they do discretionary enforcement; the question is are they allowed to do it under the law. The laws are pretty cut and dried. Otherwise, why have the law?

Yeah, you'd think. Seriously. But they don't.

We went to Publix this morning and saw a woman going the wrong way on an aisle! **

I don't think it's that at all. It's one of those "this is 'something', and something needs to be done, so let's do this 'something'". I don't know if it's a good idea or not. I can see the value of having anything to limit how far any droplets spread. Not sure if it's something we want to try to enforce or not. Wouldn't be such a big deal if so many people "wearing" masks didn't have them under their nose or even around their necks.

I've never understood how police could on their own decide which laws to enforce and which ones not to enforce. Their job is to enforce the laws, not decide which are good and which are not good.

They are obligated to follow the constitution over federal or state law and law over regulation and regulation over SOP, etc. They are not supposed to just exercise "wholesale" discretion (e.g. stop enforcing marijuana laws) even if they have to exercise some "retail" discretion (e.g., not booking every kid they find with a joint or sixpack so they are available for more serious crimes).

Not sure if the masks thing is unconstitutional or not. I am guessing it's more about the impracticality of handing out fines to people that are wearing it wrong and stopping people form getting groceries because they left the mask at the house, etc. I'm guessing this is primarily them pushing back against their employer putting them in a no win, ****** situation and they are pushing back more so than it is about them disagreeing with the policy I'd guess, although I'm sure there is that too. They have enough problem with community relations without their local leaders turning them into soft gestapo.
