Southern went 21-15 last season and became the first SWAC team to win an NCAA tournament game (a 16-vs.-16 opening-round game over San Diego). The Jaguars were regular-season and tournament champions of the SWAC.

The top returning players for Southern are guards Jocelyn Tate, a 5-foot-11 sophomore, 5-7 senior D'Shantae Edwards and Taniya Lawson, a 5-8 senior. Tate was in the running for SWAC freshman of the year last season while Edwards is the team's top one-on-one defender. Lawson averaged 5.2 points and 1.9 rebounds.


Also returning is 6-4 senior Xyllize Harrison, who saw limited action last season while battling injuries. Harrison is expected to be part of an inside rotation that will give Southern a frontcourt presence.

Joining Harrison in the front court is 6-1 sophomore DeMya Porter, who worked her way into the rotation as a freshman last season. Porter had three rebounds and two points in 11 minutes of action in the NCAA Tournament game against UCLA.

Woof 7-6 five mins in. Not having a go-to guard is gonna be a challenge. Hopefully ERod develops into that.

It’s a bit disappointing that JJ hasn’t elevated the depth of talent. I think she’s trying on the recruiting trail and going after big fish, but not sure this team looks overly skilled nor possesses the athleticism of better teams. Then again, she’s integrating new and important pieces. So gonna take awhile to gel.

I remember how rough this team looked the first 8 or 9 games last season. Add to that we haven't identified who are perimeter scoring is going to be. I'll just say this, IF Kylie and McCabe are still starting by the B1G season, we'll be lucky to stay in the middle of the pack. Thats not a starting level guard combo at this level. Role players yes, but together when neither can score consistently when guarded, uh, no.
