Miss friends. Exactly what does someone do with this degree when they graduate? We had a family friend shown around last week by the recruiters up there and they found it to be a very popular degree, I'm serious.

Probably become a writer for the Jackson Free Press and live the rest of your days feeling white guilt. Basically turn into Donna Ladd.

Become a history professor. Grow a really nice beard. Learn to smoke a pipe.

Wear tweed jackets all the time, even in August.

Pick up photography as a hobby and publish a book featuring photos of dilapidated shotgun houses, juke joints, and cotton gins in the Delta.

Nailed it.

Pick up photography as a hobby and publish a book featuring photos of dilapidated shotgun houses, juke joints, and cotton gins in the Delta.

Class synopsis:

Indians around for about 500 years. Western Europeans show up. Don't know what happened to the Indians. Black folks arrive on boats. White folks buy black folks. Farming. Big war. Black folks freed. White folks angry. Food. Music. Whites still angry. Desegregation. Football.

Does that about sum it up?

Southern Studies seeks to document the American South in all of its complexity. Southern Studies students investigate challenging topics, such as the historical meaning of being a southerner, what it means to be a southerner in the twenty-first century, the relationship of the South to America's national identity and the role of the South in an increasingly global world.
Students who major in Southern Studies are intrigued by the culture and people of the American South. Southern Studies majors gain a broad understanding of the region as well as skills in critical reading, analysis, analytical writing, research, and oral presentation.

You've got to be an arrogant, ignorant SOB to get that degree.

"I'm majoring in 'how not to do things in hindsight' because there's nothing better than spending 4 years and thousands of dollars on mastering the mindset of the worst politicians in the history of the free world."

ETA: Take Dr. Wiseman's Mississippi Government & Politics class if you ever get a chance. You'd be surprised (maybe not) how many people running for governor got in fist fights at debates just in the past 100 years. Dr. Wiseman said "Mississippi didn't just become last in every catagory, we tried real hard" and "There has never been a governor from Mississippi State University, so to be clear it's Ole Miss's fault for how we are so far behind everyone else."

You think Northern schools offer Northern Studies degrees?...

...it's a regional nostalgia course. The kind you'll never find at a Northern university, because they actually won the war.

Did the rule about race-related posts expired on signing day?

Just want to make sure I know what the boundaries are.

there were a lot of work study positions open during recruiting weekends...

So this is similar to the course of study that was being used at North Carolina for hepping their athletes?

My first thought was that you could teach U.S. Southern Studies at a Community College in Europe. Then I Googled Community Colleges in Europe and apparently they don't exist; it's an American invention.

My next thought is, "Yeah, I was a Southern Studies major at Ole Miss. You want fries with your burger?"

Never heard of it, but it's probably about as useful as feminine studies and all the other targeted things like that ... in other words, useless. I can't fathom anyone spending college education money on something like that. Get a degree in something that's useful. I'm pretty opinionated on this type thing though ... not sure I agree that something like kinesiology, a popular degree for athletes, is worth a plug nickel. Or liberal arts ... what the heck does THAT train a person to do?

Think there's such a thing as "Northern Studies"? I don't.

Ha. I had the same thought but you beat me to it. And I had the same thought for the same reason. Too many folks in the south are still fighting the darn war, and think that "yankee" is a dirty word. Get over it. It's embarrassing.

Second the recommendation.

I've never had the glass, but I got to know Marty Wiseman. He is awesome.
