Just when you thought we were done with MVC teams from Illinois...

SIU was picked to finish 3rd in the Valley this year with 4 returning starters from a 20-13 team. And things went mostly according to plan early in the year. They had a lead into the second half at Kentucky, but couldn't hold on. They played #22 Buffalo close. And they blew out cupcakes UAPB and Howard.

But Barry Hinson is gonna Barry Hinson and they got rolled by a mediocre UMass team in a game they trailed by as many as 35 points to send them to this consolation match.

SIU has been extremely turnover-prone, which I'm not sure we'll be able to exploit, and really bad at rebounding, which mostly washes out. They shoot well from outside, but it's mostly #3 Bartley who's 14/24 (and 3/6 from 2). It's wishful thinking that we'll force him to drive.

At 100%, I'm confident we win this game, but without Taplin, I'm not so sure. Now is the time for other guards to step up. It's not the biggest game of the season, but it's a game we need to win if we have postseason aspirations.

Bonus video: Barry Hinson hawking crappy barbecue sauce with his name on it.

It’s a must win in bad situation.
We get it, it shows depth and toughness.
We don’t and my hopes from tonight are diminished some.

I saw the UMass-SIU game on TV. Unless the SIU players were out playing craps past midnight, they were awful. Unable to penetrate a zone or hit an outside shot. They were down 20 after 5 minutes. They will probably be better tonight.

Dannysheridan.com has not posted lines on any of the Orleans arena games. It does not show the game as "off."

One note, Nevada is ranked #6 but playing in their own State I estimated they had at best 1,500 fans at the game. While I know the competition for entertainment in Vegas is tough, I thought this was an embarrassing turnout.

Oh I fully expect siu to play better, but randomly saying we should be 6 point dogs? I don’t see it. This team is starting to gel and is getting it together. Also, Nevada fans probably assumed they didn’t need to show up and watched from home. That little gym looks really crappy too.

Games like SIU are almost “must” games for bubble teams. Usually one team is not mentally ready in these consolation games.

Vegas has SIU by 1 or 1.5
I'm surprised. I wonder if that factors in doubt about Taplin.
Still, a must win if this team is to realize its hopes for OOC.
Nevada favored by 14.5 over UMass, the same line as the TU game.

I just wanted to make sure I was looking at the right stat line cause I see SIU as a 1.5 favorite. I wonder what kind of drugs these guys are smoking. We should win this game.

Agreed. Especially seeing how they got crushed yesterday against UMASS. If we play with intensity and focus we will win.

We should still win without Taplin in this one. Igbanu is turning into a beast and I feel confident with joiner in a small sample size starting at pg (if tap is out).

UNR is located in Reno and even though the game is in the same state it’s not like driving to OKC from Tulsa and then having a late Thanksgiving dinner. It’s almost 500 miles away which is like driving from Tulsa to Houston but on mostly 2 lane road. I never expected a big turnout even though they draw 10000+ at home.

Their football team is 7-4. Fans may be saving up for a bowl game.

You’d figure they’d have alumni in Vegas. I think it was a pretty weak showing. Our board would be in meltdown mode if we were ranked number 6 and had a turnout like that.

Holiday’s are rough for road games. We used to occasionally play in the All-College tournament in OKC around New Years. Even with ranked teams, I don’t recall ever taking over 2 or 3 hundred fans.

I went to one of those when we were ranked. I remember it differently. We were never invited back for a reason. And we were never ranked in the top 10.

You’re right. I don’t believe we played in that tournament the year we climbed as high as #6 in the polls. We had our own tourney back then.

Vegas line is fluctuating from 1.5 across the Board to 1 except Wynn has it as a pick. Is there info about Taplin getting out that we don't know about?

Wouldn't be surprised if one of the bookies went to the team hotel or the UNLV practice facility to see if he was in a boot.

We used to get calls every once in a while from Vegas asking if XYZ player was going to be in the lineup tonight while I was doing media relations.
