...may be better than some of us expected. I'm sure some here have claimed he would be an immediate impact player. But of course, people make wild claims every season around here. Since the day Wheeler signed, I was thinking TyTy was his back-up and likely wouldn't make much of an impact. But if you saw his shooting in that 3pt contest, perhaps I have underestimated him. I'll be honest, even when I read recent comments from Kellan Grady when he specifically mentioned TyTy, and when I read comments from Calipari about him being better than expected, I brushed them off. Ah, that's just a guy being nice and a coach "coach-speaking." TyTy is supposed to be a pass first point guard whose shooting is developing. If he can be a consistent 3pt shooter, perhaps in the 37-40% range, that changes things.

Well, I am aware that he also won the 3pt contest at the Allen Iverson All-Star event back in the spring (could have been a meaningless fluke). No, it's not just this FanFest 3pt contest that has me thinking I could be wrong about him, it's the cumulative effect of several things I mentioned- the practice reports, the high praise from multiple players like Grady and Wheeler, the high praise from Calipari, and then watching him sink 21-25 in that contest last night (and great form, by the way) pushed me toward thinking a little bit differently about him. Bear in mind, I'm not saying he's a star or will even start a game. I'm just saying I'm having second thoughts about him not really making much of an impact this season.

A lot of people (everyone?) overlooked the very last thing Cal said about TyTy in his press conference, after all the good things he said about him.

"Decision making not quite there".

Another question is how he'll be playing on the big stage in front of thousands. Will he succumb to the pressure or thrive on it? Remember all those highlight videos you've seen him in? Did you notice the crowd sizes? Typically no more than a few hundred people. Here's a pic of the AZ Compass Prep gym. Seriously, even if fans are standing around the court filling the place, could it possibly hold more than 500 people?



I know a lot around here don't like the easy non-conf home schedule, but I'm glad about it. It will give the freshmen time to adjust to the college game and gain confidence before playing tougher opponents. I'd love to see both Collins and Hopkins get significant minutes during this stretch and then take it from there based on how they perform.

I'm confident that by the time the SEC schedule starts TyTy will be ready.

I've assumed that Cal would like to give the keys to the BBN car to Tyty, but won't hesitate to give them to Wheeler if need be. And for us to be a really good team, I think we need Tyty to be "that player", maybe not a Wall or Ulis (Soph), but at least close to a Knight, Fox, SGA type PG for us. A guy who can get a bucket when we need one (whether shooting or driving). If he is more like Teague, then we will be a good team, but not what we all hope.

This is certainly a question, but I think it goes beyond that. Basketball is a game of fundamentals. Rebounding, second chance points, stopping the other teams second chances, passing vs. turnovers, all hold as much or more meaning as simply shooting skills. Personally, and I have said it before, I believe this is a Final Four team if Cal uses the depth and a much more intense all out defense with that advantage as there may be better starting fives out there but not one team has this team's starting ten.

According to Maxpreps, TyTy shot 41% from 3 his senior year on 88 attempts.

A while back, someone had said that, as high as he got ranked, it could have even been higher, but they were being a little cautious since he came on so fast.

Yeah, I caught that about his decision making. I'm hoping some good coaching will help in that regard, and also playing against an all-SEC caliber pg in Wheeler every day in practice. If his shooting has become a strength, he might even play off the ball with Wheeler in the game. With the 4-out, 1-in offense, you could play multiple guards at once. Having Mintz could help with PG duties as well.

I didn't really have to read though I've seen him play..

Played against Banchero in High School and beat him. Played against Hickman and pretty much handled him. So much so Hickman backed out and we went for Tyty. Right there I knew Cal wasn't going to pull a Tubby and pack up when it got tough. He was all in. Got a statue and a arena floor named after him.

I’ve been comparing him to Brandon Knight. After looking at Knight’s stats at Kentucky, I actually think TyTy will be better than Knight. Washington or Grady will lead team in scoring. Starting lineup I think is Wheeler, Washington, Grady, Brooks, Tshiebwe. Toppin and Mintz first off the bench.

Jeez man, go back to post #18. This ain't hard. I responded to a post that said Quickly also won a 3pt shooting contest. My reply said that Brick-so also won a 3pt shooting contest, so 3 pt shooting contests aren’t a good way to measure how good a kid can shoot.

Then, here you are trying to disagree with me, by actually saying the same thing.

Just when I think Rupp Rafters has wrung out all the dudes that suffer massive reading comprehension issues, you step up with: "Hold my beer bro"

"Briscoe won a three point shooting contest too, so what that tells you is they are not a good way to measure how a player is going to shoot in legit game action."

I gave you the actual game action stats from his sr season year to give you a better measure and to negate the Briscoe comparison. Evidently that was bad.

Guess I need to repeat myself again, the topic WAS NOT about high scool shooting percentages. You responded to my post with "yeah, but did Briscoe shoot 41% in high school", but AGAIN, that has nothing to do with the discussion, which is how winning 3 point shooting contests translate to how kids will performin college game action.

You can't be this f*cked up, but maybe you are.

Yeah might be why I’m thinking (hoping) something like Maxey.

A guy who comes in with other talented guards around him. Will get you 25 on his best night, but it won’t kill your team on the nights he struggles.

The topic was about 3 pt shooting and good ways to measure them. It wasn't limited to 3pt contest, you just made up that requisite when you looked a bit ignorant. It wasn't about Briscoe either, but that didn't stop you from bringing him up.

The post I replied to was about the 3 pt shooting contest and nothing more, you tried to correct me with a stat that had nothing to do with the topic of the post I replied to and my reply.

Example:
Poster A: my Ford truck has a diesel that will pull 30,000lbs

Me: yes, but it’s not about pulling it, it's about stopping it

You: but if you take the engine out of the space shuttle bro, put dual turbo's on that **** and put a trash can sized exhaust pipe on, it'll pull 31,000 pounds bro (insert crazy Cooter's laugh here)

He was a number one ranked recruit in HS for a ton of time on some services. Consensus top 5 and number one PG.

Briscoe won a 3 point contest at the end of his Senior year of HS. That is why he mentioned Briscoe. Winning a 3 point contest proves nothing, if you consider how poorly Briscoe shot the ball while at UK.

Right, which is why I mentioned the senior year shooting % for TyTy, but we are evidently only allowed to mention things with which this poster approves of. He said the OP didn't mention HS shooting %, but he also didn't mention Briscoe. So I was inquiring why one and not the other is acceptable...
