Sounds like Sidney probably won't end up getting in.

Per the latest clarion ledger blog Don Jackson got an email saying the NCAA wanted the past 4 years of tax returns, bank statements and travel expense receipts or they would not grant him eligibility. Then Jackson goes on to pull the race card, which obviously does no good. Looks like unless they release the paperwork, it's all but over.

but can someone tell me why Sidney is being singled out? Are they doing this to every USC recruit or is it just b/c he is a high profile recruit?

but what right does a private organization have asking for that sort of information. I wouldn't give that much to my employer.

will be drawn out until 2016 by this time Sydney will be in the NBA and MSU will have to forfeit their wins for this year and get slapped on the wrist. And no one will care how we got the SEC banner for 2009-2010 hanging from the Hump.

I also hear the NAACP cranking up their engines. Give em hell Rev Jessie.

have they EVER required a player's family to release bank statements and/or tax returns to gain college eligibility? If not, how can they single out one case in the history of the NCAA and force that family to release such personal financial information to gain college eligibility. Looks like Sidney probably won't get in but there will almost certainly be another lawsuit headed the NCAA's way.

and the NCAA is terrible, but they are the only game in town, and if you don't play by their rules, then you don't play. There is no right to participate in intercollegiate athletics so the NCAA isn't unlawfully infringing upon any right.

The NCAA is being ridiculous with their requests, plus Donald Jackson is being a loud-mouth lawyer complaing about everything. I think I'd rather just hear about it when its over.

I think we can all agree that dude and his family have been paid - but you probably can't name anybody in the Top 50 player rankings that hasn't received vitually the same package.

Pretty much everyone knows they took money. Now proving that is a totally different story. But Don Jackson only cares about Don Jackson. I wouldn't be shocked if he's happy about this. If Sidney was actually let in he wouldn't be needed any more.

who haven't had to go through this to get cleared. He's definitely been singled out by the NCAA, much like Powe was singled out by them even though he's far from the first illiterate person to play college football. Eventually the NCAA had to back down on the Powe case. We won't have 3 years to let it play out with Sidney though.

Out of all the college players who get paid, why him? He probably flaunted it too much. They are just pissed that there's no evidence and so they're gonna delay this whole thing so long that he just can't play.

he is just doing his job. He represents Renardo and is doing what is in his best interest. If Renardo gets eligible then he gets other clients. In sum, if anyone can get Sidney cleared it will be him.

The real question is who gave and how much. But if I was given cash, it would not be on any tax return or bank statement. You get cash, then you spend cash. Problem is how do you justify the rent payments on the house in CA.

that pretty much seals the deal in my opinion. They're just going to ask and ask until the family says no and then say he cant play

they lived in a multi-million dollar home. They did so with a loan. They had no collateral. The ncaa probably wants to know how that came to be. If an agent or agent's rep (or shoe rep) loaned money or co-signed then that's that.

And just like Powe and hundreds of other college football players should have never been admitted to college.

...1) The USC/Tim Floyd connection. The Mayo situation embarrassed the NCAA, and they are now in crackdown mode. Sydney is seen as connected to the same program/coach.
2) The dirtiness of basketball recruiting has been high profile lately. Mayo, Rose, Dozier, numerous articles written about AAU teams and how everything works. The NCAA had a blind eye turned to all this stuff, but not anymore. They need to make an example of somebody.
3) We are MSU, not UNC, UCLA, etc. They view this as a great opportunity to make an example out of a high profile kid not going to play for a high profile program. Stans has a shady reputation, and they know that dealing with this at MSU is totally different than dealing with this at UK, UNC, etc. in terms of outcry. What does it matter if it makes us mad?

That said, I had pretty much resigned myself to this when they started asking for bank statements. He's not going to play for us. We should still be good enough for a Sweet 16 next year. And I still say that even if he were eligible, he might not have been good for team chemistry, there might have been daddy issues, etc. I figured that from the moment we signed there would be around a 10% chance that Sydney would become eligible AND help the team get past the second round.

The only real difference is the reason why their eligibility is in question.

In both cases, it is/was widely publicized as an example of why the system is a joke. In Powe's case, he was widely publicized as the poster child for athletes not being true students. In Sidney's case, he's the poster child of the high school kid getting paid illegally.

In both cases, the NCAA has drug its feet to try to delay until the player eventually gave up. In Powe's case, they were hoping he'd just give up and go to a Juco. In Sidney's case, they are hoping he'll just give up and go overseas for a year.

If you can't see the similarities, you are just being a blind homer. The NCAA sucks. I'll agree with that, but they are singling out Sidney because they know it will be bad PR for them if he is able to play NCAA sports, in the same way they singled out Powe because of the PR that it would create for them to allow him to get in. There have been plenty of players to do what Sidney did, and there have been plenty of players as weak academically as Powe that have all played college sports. The difference is the high level of public scrutiny on both cases, which is the ultimate reason the NCAA singled both out.

They get a notion you did something wrong and it's your job to prove you didn't. The burden of proof is yours, not theirs... which is completely backwards, of course. And if they REALLY think you're guilty but have nothing to prove it, they'll just sit on your case, inflicting a de facto punishment.

if the parents made the deal it has nothing to do with sydney and would not affect his elgibility(of course the ncaa can do whatever they want)...also, of course lebron was never going to college but his mom did get a loan to get him that hummer based on "potential" income....

based on his potential income. in theory, lebron should have been declared ineligible for ohio high school basketball when his mom got the loan for the hummer if the loan was based solely on his future earning potential. at that point, he is no longer an amateur. similarly, if the sydneys got a loan based on the future earning potential of renardo, then he loses his amateur status. it doesn't matter if the player directly receives the benefit - just that there is a form of compensation for his playing (or future ability to earn).

ennis proctor would've declared lebron ineligible. didn't lebron have some issue with accepting free retro nba jerseys during his senior year? i think it was in exchange for an appearance or something.

the way around this, obviously, is to have some other reasoning for the loan other than the player's future earning potential. i think that's what you're saying - that if the parents could get the deal without mention of the son, then his amatuer status should not be affected in any way. maybe they can claim the loan was part of a stimulus package - that shouldn't be too hard to prove.

if Jr knew what was going on behind closed doors? I think it has been established that Sr. took money from Vacarro or whatever his name was for his AAU team. That was obviously above the table. You know all these leeches in AAU are crooked, so there's no telling what happened under the table.

But I could envision Sr. doing all of this and keeping jr. in the dark; for a couple of reasons. One, so if anything like this came up, he'd honestly not know that anything happened and would deal with the NCAA in that respect and two; I could see the dad being greedy enough to catch him some cash while he can and think to himself that jr. will get his payday when he hits the NBA.

that John Calipari has pictures of Myles Brand having relations with a farm animal. He has completely mastered how to completely ignore all NCAA rules, almost brazenly, and suffer no repercussions.
