I guess Gov. Ivey is part of that Democratic plot to overthrow Trump. Definite deep state stuff***

She said ICUs are at 87% capacity statewide. Alabama had the highest single day case total yesterday on top of that.

You’re basically seeing the same story play out all across the South.

Is there a good explanation to why Reeves only mandated 13 counties and not the entire state?

Alabama wants their college football! Even if it requires masks. May be rioting in the streets over here if college football gets cancelled.

I would not be surprised to see Tate Reeves do something similar when considering his recent comments and tweets.

She basically said the other option was to shut down the economy, so she chose the mask mandate. Will be interesting to see what happens with the numbers.

But didn't I read where the average ICU occupancy PRE-COVID is about 70% (80% at Univ Texas Austin Med Center). So if the average unit has 10-12 beds, we're talking about an extra 2 people? I'm not arguing that we're approaching capacity but if an extra "2 or "3" puts you at capacity then is it COVID causing the problem or was the other various diseases that filled up the other 8 beds? Also, it's that damn media narrative again of ICU's being "flooded" with COVID patients. They're flooded alright, but I wouldn't say its from COVID.

It’s not a media narrative. It came from the governor’s own lips. I swear some people will grasp at any straws they can find to explain away Covid. And I really don’t know why. If people will stop being willfully ignorant, maybe the numbers will go down. The numbers aren’t fake. Republican governors in Texas, Florida and Alabama aren’t inflating numbers to scare people into wearing masks to exert government control over them.

addressing the worst hit/minimizing pissing off the entire voting base
So the plan is to just keep adding counties to the mandate as things get “bad”, instead of trying to keep them from getting that way in the first place..genius.
I don’t even live in MS and I can’t stand that guy.

The order says it includes outdoor public spaces when more than 10 people are present. But it also says it’s only required when within six feet of another person not from the same family. So if you’re just chilling on the beach with your family and not within six feet of another family, no mask required.

It’s a mix. Lots of surgeries that were put off in the spring are being done now, putting more people in ICU. I’ve got at least two accounts that are cutting back on elective surgeries again...lack of beds.

I don't doubt the numbers. I did have a UMMC nurse friend tell me that they were back to "normal" with regards to occupancy. They described normal as being full (needing 20% more beds than they have). They said specifically, "The narrative will be that we are full because of COVID, but really we are always full during normal times." I had another friend at UMMC tell me that there were COVID patients in available rooms in the children's floors, something they had never seen before. That right there tells me that even front line workers in the same space don't agree, so it's easy to see how the general population could be confused and lean toward whatever their natural slant is.

I just got back from Destin on Monday. It is not hard to social distance on the beach. There were 10 of us together. Never had an issue with people encroaching on our space. It was beautiful btw. Calmest clearest water I have ever seen.

I'm going to disagree. He picked the five largest counties to be part of the 13? Those five counties are 1/3 of the population of the state. I don't think it was politically. He is just trying to get the virus slowed down.

Glad to see it.

Wish she'd made the call last week so we'd be that much closer to seeing how much of a difference it made.

Now, that aside, Alabama is nearing a COVID hospitalization count roughly equivalent to 50% of pre-COVID spare beds. That was one of my original suggested metrics for initiating a shutdown. Unfortunately that's no longer on the table due to how early we shutdown the first time and how long we stayed shut down. The double economic hit would permanently kill hundreds of businesses and tens of thousands of jobs in the state on top of those already lost.

That’s been my issue the whole time. If he really believes that masks will minimize the spread, then do it for the whole 17ing state and save lives. Goddamned ****

I can only speak for my hospital, but these past few weeks have been bad. A good deal of it is Covid. We have way more COVID patients than we did during the first wave

Gulf Shores just canceled Shrimp Fest for 2020. That is a big deal down here. If you are headed to GS/OB, plenty of room on beach to social distance. I live in GS and always wear mask in Walmart or Publix. Most don’t wear masks. Glad to see that being required now. I want college football.

I really haven’t seen that many people not wearing mask in the stores... I am getting close to double digits on people I know that have tested positive in the last few weeks.. only 1 was sick with Flu like symptoms, 2 others had runny nose/sore throat... the remainder had no symptoms.

Out of people I personally know, 1 had flu like symptoms, 1 with loss of smell, 1 with loss of smell and upset stomach, 1 with cold-like symptoms an 1 with no symptoms. I'm not sure how many people I know that have had it b/c of other people I've heard about it, they have apparently not wanted people to know. Like it's a shame thing. Not sure if they're worried about people blaming them if they get it or what.

ETA: Personally know is probably the wrong term. People I would consider more than just acquaintances and/or would be likely to see in person other than by chance.

Governor Me-Maw coming in hot at the "but freedom" crowd.

My thought would be, is there really any good argument for not wearing a mask? I know there are those that will say but, but, but, freedom which is dumb. If there is even a 1% chance that masks can help, why not just put the damn thing on?

Covids don't necessarily HAVE to go into ICU do they ? Can't they go into CCU or even regular rooms if the symptoms aren't to bad ?

That's where I am. I'm all for freedom and rights, but c'mon it's just a mask. No, it doesn't erase the virus, but if it helps at all let's do it. Especially if it helps us have football, dang it.
