Hugh Kellenburger tweets that Kelly is going to Haiti with freezus during spring break for a mission trip (the same one Bryant went on).

There were about 20 of you MFers (including me) who said months ago this exact thing would play out. Freezus is rescuing his poor soul.** #WinThePressConference.

The real joke is Freeze saying that he doubts the QB battle will be settled in the spring. It's already settled.

I guess I fail to see why this is a bad thing.

First, obviously Freeze only cares about Kelly because he can play quarterback, such is life, there is a price for everything. Second, while I have my own thoughts about whether rich people going out of country to help people is actually helpful, who am I to tell someone how they spend their money and time. Third, I do not think it will hurt Chad Kelly to see real poverty in action.

There are a lot worse things they could be doing.

Semi OT ...

But since 'when' have the OM baseball team referred to themselves as the "Diamondbears?" ... as in this from Red Cup Rebellion ...

The Diamondbear bats look to get heated up on Wednesday as Ole Miss travels to Hattiesburg to take on the Mustard Buzzards of Southern Mississippi at 6 p.m. CT.

I would put nothing past the entity known as Ole Miss baseball. They spare no expense when it comes to challenging the established lines of douchebaggery.

If Red Cup Rebellion did it - they are probably just doing it as a joke. I doubt Ole Miss baseball officially goes by that.

Yeah, Im gonna refrain from criticizing people taking time to help those less fortunate, regardless of where they may be helping.

I have no issue with doing hard work for those who need it. I'd prefer it to be done in the US, like say in our own damn state, but whatever. Plenty of places in-state that could use the help.

My nitpicking point here though is that there is zero chance Kelly soul be on this trip if he hadn't gotten in trouble. It's all about the PR.

In a vacuum, it's not bad. It's great. We should all do good deeds. The problem is it comes across as sanctimonious bull-ish when you announce it to the media during a press conference. As if you are doing it so people will notice you instead of doing it out of the goodness of your heart. Like the guy who gives to a charity and then proclaims how much he gives to charity. Annoying and self righteous.

I'm not criticizing the fact they want to help, I'm criticizing the fact that freeze had to make an announcement in a press conference for the sole purpose of PR (redemption, second chances, etc.). You can expect a huge story in the CL tomorrow about it and you can bet that every media source this fall will yell from the mountaintops that Freezus is heppin' and giving second chances to "troubled kids" (that happen to be high profile football players). Kelly is absolutely the starting QB, so this is nothing more than the setup for the PR machine this summer/fall.

And not only that, MULTIPLE people on the board said this very thing would play out months ago. And here it is... Like clockwork.

Correct.

It's a great thing to do. But do it anonymously. Don't bring attention to yourself. As the reverend freeze should know, this sanctimonious approach has its price. From the book of Matthew, chapter six, verses one through four, Jesus Christ himself says:

"Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father, who is in heaven. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you."

I'm far from perfect, and I'm not preaching at anyone. But when someone like Freeze continuously wears his religion on his sleeve and uses it in a less-than-ethical way, he should be held accountable to all of the word, not just the bits and pieces he likes to quote on twitter.

Good for you. I do work with the less fortunate and have no qualms about doing it in my hometown. I also get tired of asking to donate to trips to help the less fortunate and then see the pics from their 'vacation'. Far too many trips to Africa to help include the pics from the savannah and Victoria Falls. I see no problem at all calling it as it is. Sure, you get to put a feather in your hat when you 'help others' but remember that the time and money you aren't spending on helping them isn't helping them.

Just my $.02 that a lot of helping others seems very misplaced on what the true goal of the trip should be. And in this case, the trip is to help get a QB eligible.

That's because all we care about is the press conference. It's really amazing we ever win any actual games, since all we focus on is the press conference.

I can't imagine how good we could be if we'd actually focus on winning games at some point. I think I'm going to go tweet to Bjork about it and see if we can get our athletic department mission changed.

I used to hold similar views until I actually started going on some of these trips. In my experience, any sight-seeing/vacationing only occurs either before or after the work is done. Most missions have a specific job for you to do while you're there. Once it's done, they're ready for you to go home. If the group wants to spend an extra day seeing Victoria Falls, that won't be a problem as, more than likely, the mission already has another group coming in that will need your beds. My approach is this: if I'm going to Zambia on a mission trip, I'm going to want the opportunity to see one of the 7 wonders as I know I'm not going to Zambia otherwise to see it at another time. That being said, under no circumstances am I going to use money I raised for the mission trip to pay my way to the falls. A few years ago, I went with a group to Peru. I had an opportunity, at the end of the week, to go do Machu Picchu, but since I didn't have the personal money to fund the excursion, I didn't go. At the end of the day, what does it matter if people enjoy a day of of personal time after a week of immersing yourself in abject poverty trying to love on others?

Little slow on the up- take ...

[B said:

Correct. It's making fun of ED.

So .. how exactly is RedCup making fun of ED .. by calling them the DiamondBears and BasketBears?

And, is ED really 'living in their collective head' that much?

Not your best work.
Eh...I knew it lacked a little pizzazz, but I went with it anyway. This whole "win the press conference" mantra is funny.

On topic though, do people honestly believe this is ONLY about PR?

I understand having that thought, but if you have this yearly Spring Break mission trip as part of your program, wouldn't you want a guy that's coming in with a somewhat troubled and spoiled past to be one of the first guys you sign up to take?

OK, so there is a PR benefit too, but clearly the bigger benefit in Freeze strongly encouraging this trip for Kelly is to try to try to get his mind right, possibly humble him some, so that he stays out of trouble and contributes at a high level for his team. I think that's pretty clear to see.

Regardless if it's PR or not - some good is coming out of it.

But you don't have to announce every good deed you do. "Ole Miss friend at work" showed me a tweet today about a Ole Miss website showing Freeze preaching at a Baptist church this week. He knows it gets under my skin.

I seriously doubt any place in Mississippi needs help more than where they are going in Haiti. Now I'm not sure if they're really providing much help, but it's not like they are spending a bunch of money to go on a mission trip to appalachia, in which case they could help similarly situated people while staying closer to home.

Nothing about going to Haiti is a stunt. You can say going to read Dr. Seuss at elementary schools is a stunt. That's not the same thing.

I'd call it more of a punishment, reverend. Haiti sucks in so many ways. So you can call it a stunt, but the poor bastard is going to earn it. And probably lose 20 lbs from dysentery.

The good people that do it out of the kindness of their hearts should be praised. No one thinks Kelly is going there out of the kindness of his heart. But that doesn't make it a "stunt."
