Has gone radio silent on me this week. I turned my info into him in mid-March and we were communicating all the way through last weekend. He said he'd e-file the taxes and we could pay online. And now we can't get in touch with him.

Anyone know anything about penalties for paying late or submitting late? Would we have any recourse in this scenario? We worked with him last fall on re-doing our previous three years and he was just fine. Seems like we might be up **** creek this year though.

Sounds like it's time to get a new tax guy....After you get in touch with him and cuss him out of course.

Kicking this dude's *** would be job 1.
Check your refund/payment status online. And watch your credit reports.

There is a failure to file a tax return penalty. There is also a failure to pay penalty if you owe tax with the return. There is interest on any potential unpaid amount that accrues as long as it is unpaid. If he filed an extension on your behalf, which is possible without your signature or approval, you only have to worry about the other two if you owe tax upon filing. The filing of the extension doesn't extend the date you must pay by, which was 4/18/17, so that's why the failure to pay and interest amount are potential issues. If an extension is filed and a tax due is anticipated, an estimate should have been sent in by 4/18/17.

And that guy needs the 17 beat out of him. You don't jerk around with other people's taxes.

Tried to tell you that Nigerian Prince wasn't really a CPA.**

Seriously though that sucks and I hate it for you. You don't do people like that and you definitely don't mess with people's taxes. Hope y'all can get it sorted out quickly.

And then beat his ***.

OPH sums it up pretty well. I'm sure he filed an extension, so there shouldn't be any late filing penalty. Even if he didn't, you or your next CPA should be able to get you out of it. He definitely should have let you know if he wasn't going to get the return done in time (pretty inexcusable not to if you for your stuff to him by the end of March) & should have at least discussed whether you wanted to pay an estimate with your extension.

It is likely the guy got in the deadline crunch and did an extension, but you're right, it's not professional at all if he didn't discuss extending it or whether to pay an estimate.

Had no idea until this year that an extension doesn't mean you don't have to pay on 4/19.

there are penalties for both paying and submitting late. And if you didn't make estimates, there is a penalty for that too. Oh yea.. interest also.

What is is your situation? Are you a wage earner with withholding or do you file a schedule C? If you get a refund and are a few weeks or so late you are ok. Just file ASAP. But you did say you will owe. You can call the IRS to see if there is an extension filed. If not, file one. And an extension to file is not an extension to pay. If you think you will owe an amount, pay it now. You can do it on the IRS website. You will get it back if you don't owe it when you file.

BTW, your accountant was not in this office was he?

like you would have a better accountant than that.

This is my first time using him in the spring time. He was recommended to me last year by a friend and the guy got me a refund for 2013, 2014, and 2015 because I wasn't deducting everything I could have been. Last fall, he was great. This spring however, he already lost me a customer.

Another topic... if anyone has any experience doing their own taxes, I'd be interested in anything you've learned or resources you've used. I'm gonna try it next spring I thing.

Use turbo tax. It literally asks you yes or no questions. Full disclosure, I am an accountant, albeit in the private sector. I think this may come easier to me because of that, but I have forgotten/relearned a lot since college and taking the exam. My advice would be to make sure you have all of the right documents/forms that you will use to report. It may take a good bit of referring to prior years' returns, but once you have filed with turbo tax one year, for the next it will ask you things like "you did X last year, do you need to claim it for this year also?" Hell, it may even allow you to import your prior year's returns. Making a checklist for reference each year might not be a bad idea either.

I've got an accounting degree but haven't done public work in 10 years. But I use taxslayer.com. I like it's setup. I've used it for my own and several friends/family members for years and it keeps prior years so you can look back for comparisons and stuff. It'll guide you step by step if dealing with taxes are new to ya. Once you've done it a time of two you can skip the help and knock them out by yourself in no time.

I used TurboTax for several years, but it was clear that they didn't allow certain deductions that this guy did push through. The refunds he got me for each of the previous 3 years was over $1000 per year... so it was significant money. The tax bill this year is much smaller too... his customer service just sucks.

I may need to check out Tax Slayer and see if they allow for the things that I couldn't deduct on Turbo.

Agree! Been using turbo tax for 20 years. Of course I too am an accountant.

Anyway, you certainly can't trust anyone with your taxes.

however, for a quickie , file an extension but make sure you've paid the equivalent of what you paid in taxes last year. I do believe that would eliminate any potential penalty. Indeed just filing an extension does not extend the payment due date, but if you've paid enough, you're covered.

Sorry to tell you but if turbo tax didn't allow it, it just might not be an allowable deduction.

Its great software because it works, its thorough, and they back thier work. Updates are constant.

having said that, anyone can get creative, self included. But given this guys disappearance act, I'd have my doubts about his legitimacy rather than top level tax software. But that's just my opinion. Good luck with that.

Yep, I agree. Could be the reason Missouri can't get in touch with the guy is because he's in jail.

Agree. I'm a retired accountant from the corporate world and always filed via Turbo Tax or something similar. Turbo is the best at this point. But it's really nothing to it. I transfer all my income data electronically from my brokerage acct, answer all the questions concerning other income/deductions and you have it. As stated, getting all your info together beforehand is the key but you have to do that anyway when using a CPA. A friend of mine told me the other day that his CPA charged him $300 for preparing his return this year. He hasn't got anything going on that is out of the ordinary either. But.....some people simply do not want to fool with it.

I'm a CPA but haven't been in public practice for five years. My vote's on Turbo Tax too. It's thorough and covers all allowable deductions.

If this guy costs you penalties and interest, report him to the state board, and get that money from him. And with an extension, I'm nearly certain you have to pay an adequate estimate.

So I guess you just felt like this would make you sound like a big timer?

Yes. Precisely my goal. Wanted to make sure everyone here knew how big of a baller I am. I've recently reached out to Lavar Ball about signing a deal to represent his Big Baller Brand. This post was a key part of the application process.

Go eat a dick.

And maybe you don't understand how taxes work, but when you go back redo taxes from previous years, you can get money back (a refund). It's not going to be the full amount you paid or more, but any money back is worth it.

Interest is minimal. 1.5% I do believe.
I file an extension every year.
I can make up that penalty and interest by the time it's due in October.
