I just got home from score keeping a boys 10 and under mite baseball game. I've been a youth baseball, youth girls softball and adult softball scorekeeper for many years for 1oo's of games but tonight a thought popped into my mind. These kids all showed great attitudes, never complained, did what their coaches ask of them and no doubt had a lot of fun and instead of criticizing a player who made a mistake they encouraged. Coaches from both teams would compliment opposing player when they made a good play. As I sat there I realized that 22 years ago on that same field I was helping coach my son on that same field when there was a play that I have never forgotten. We were batting with a runner on first when our batter hit a ground ball to their second baseman who fielded the ball and attempted to tag our runner going to second and clearly missed the tag. We appealed but before the umpires had a chance to discuss the play their 2nd baseman went to the umps and told them he missed the tag. What character and honesty was displayed by this young man. To this day I still remember that player and his name. What's the reason for this thread you may be thinking. What if we lived in a world that was like these young men and that 2nd baseman displayed 22 years ago. How wonderful of a society we would have. On a 2nd thought I also score keep adult softball. I leave it with this. There is no comparison between the attitude, integrity and sportsmanship between the two . OFC

Good stuff. An ounce of class outweighs a pound of bravado. True winners don’t need to bend the rules or show off. Just play hard and buy the other team a pitcher of beer win or lose (even if Roy turns it down).

The thing about it kids know how to live and treat other people until they have to deal with the world that has now been created changes them. We all have contributed to what we live in. I guess their innocence is why I enjoy kids so much. OFC

To be fair, there are still lots of adults who would be honest. And there are kids who would lie. Chances are the kid who was truthful grew into an adult that is truthful. One thing I’ve learned as a teacher? Your heart, your core, is what it is, no matter what age you are:) Our roles as adults, as role models, is really important to it all. We can never abdicate that.

I coached my daughters 1st grade basketball team this year- first time coaching for me and it was a learning experience...even with div 1 athletic experience not much prepares you for your first coaching gig.

We had a few basic rules:

1. Have fun
2. Play hard
3. Help your teammate / opponent up if you knock them down
4. Shake hands after and mean what you say

And pull for Duke, always :)

You are correct. The misbehaving adults are minimal but enough to mess it up for all. OFC
