What's the point of running the weave out front before starting the offense? I've seen Cal go crazy for them not doing this. Seems like he wants at least one trip to each side of the floor before they set up offense. What does this do? Is it similar to putting a man in motion in football? See what the D is doing? I've tried since Cals been here to figure it out but I'm still stumped.

Confuses the defense, and makes them work. You don't want D to be able to sit back.

I can't remember which game it was but it was one of the first ones and Cal went nuts because Monk took off on a drive after he got the ball from Fox. The next timeout he was still screaming "go to one side then back then go!" Like Monk made one of the worst mistakes of all time. Just wondering why he wants that movement to start the offense. Thanks for the help and clarification.

It's easier to get a good shot when you make the defense move, especially side to side. This opens a lot more options on offense. Cal's yelling at Monk because when you shoot on the first pass(not fast break) you are not making the defense move which is easier for the defense.

Coach is making defense switch and the players can get a favorable matchup that they can take advantage of

That's what I was lookin for at first but a lot of the times the D doesn't even switch they play 10 feet off the players and kinda wait till they get done weaving lol. I've even seen the D not move at all till the weave was done. It's just strange to me and I can't see the purpose but they do it every single possession that they don't get out on a break.

Good way to check for man to man or zone, plus in man to man how/if they may switch.

This is exactly what I was thinking but didn't know if it made sense in basketball. I know in football the QB will put a slot or TE in motion if he's having trouble reading the D presnap. It makes the most sense just didn't think it would be necessary every possession but I guess it is. Thanks for the reply.

And that's what Cal wants. If the defense doesn't move with the weave, we end up with a mismatch that we can use.
It's the same premise as a high screen, they are trying to make a big man come out and defend a guard on a switch.

Makes sense. Thanks for all the help guys. I'm not really a basketball dummy but I definitely don't know a lot about the more technical stuff.

The question you asked is a very good question, you shouldn't knock yourself for asking it.
There are so many things going on out there on the floor that most people don't see.
Lots of coaches use the weave, Michigan State used to use it on every possession and run the clock all the way down in the process. That's one of many reasons why their games used to end in the 50's and 60's. But they were very good at creating good matchups with it.

Im glad we do it. For the first half of the season (ala pre-camp cal) our entire offense was predicated on fast breaks or Monk getting open and popping a 3. I spent 1/4 of the game screaming at my television when the offense would sputter "Run offense!" Now they do and my blood pressure thanks Cal.

Running the weave creates passing lanes and driving lanes. Notice how Bam has seemed like a Man-child since the break? Notice how Bricoe and Fox can get anywhere they want? Both of those are in large part because we run offense (the weave is just a basic offensive stratagy that puts your team into favorable sets).

We have some very smart fans on this board.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not but there are some very knowledgeable guys on here. I never played basketball past my sophomore year in HS. There's a lot about the game I don't know. A lot of guys on here can break it down and even put it in idiots terms where even I can understand it lol. I just read the thread about tourney favorites offense/defense ranking and learned a whole lot and got schooled on some things I'd never really thought much about before. So yeah there are some very smart basketball folks on here. There's also a bunch that think they're Wooden (and very well could be) but like to put guys down because they ask what they consider a simple question lol. A little of each on this board lol.

Bingo. You see other teams doing the same to us as well. They run the weave until they get a good scorer being guarded by Gabriel and then they attack. There is also the component of making the defense work. If they don't there might be bad switches or no switching and you end up with an open look.

Maybe Calipari is channeling Adolph Rupp. I don't know whether Rupp explicitly directed his teams to begin every half-court offensive set with the three-man weave out front . . . but it sure did happen a lot with Rupp's teams.

Wait, what?
Cal may be able to coach?
Have the right people heard about this?

What was the stat they quoted yesterday? Cal is like 312-2 when his team leads at any point in a game? Something crazy. I don't think a coach can do that by accident.

Was not being sarcastic at all. I have learned a lot from some of the posters on this board.
