Well, he has one one the biggest NIL budgets and a blue blood program. In today’s basketball every new coach starts with a blank canvas. Not to mention, Cal had very little when he came here and had an amazing season in 2010.
Name another coach that started a new job and had 0 players, or coaches… .. in April.
Not only that, but he played a top 3 SOS and in arguably the toughest conference ever.
Cal had to get rid of players when he came on. Not only that, but 2009 was a different time.
That same coach was at UK in 2020/21 when we saw the worst season in our history with 4 NBA talents on the roster. He also has our worst two NCAAT losses ever and he did it in consecutive years, with a bunch of NBA level talent at his disposal.
So, Cal wasn’t even able to come close to 2009 Cal, how can we expect Pope to be better, even though he has been?

Are you seriously comparing whatever conferences Wagner and Rhode Island play in, to the SEC?
Sorry, 3-13 and 5-11 is pretty awful. I'm not sure what point you were trying to make, but it fell flat.
Ohh, I'm sorry, did Pope start coaching in the SEC to begin his career?

Wait, let me get this straight, 15 quad 1 wins snd a sweet 16 in year 1 with zero players to start and 3 starters out/injured isn’t good enough, but Todd Golden getting San Francisco to the NCAAT is supposed to be awesome? Hilarious.
Yea. First time they went in 20 years. Where did we finish in our own conference again?

Wow.. a sw 16 at UK! Holy ****! It's not like we haven't done that half the time since the sw16 came into existence.

#3 SOS with injuries. That matters. We were a 3 seed for a reason.
In year 1 with no players to start… in April and 3 starters out/injured, is a problem. Hurley and/or Golden wouldn't win snot in that scenario either.
Wow, a hard SOS, well this changes everything and obviously means we didn't finish 6th in our own conference! Lulz

You mean Pope was barred from brining his own players like every other coach? He wasn't allowed the instant transfer portal like every other coach? He wasn't allowed to get players to return that were already here? He wasn't allowed to re-recruit HS players thats had already committed here or elsewhere? He wasn't allowed to keep former assistant coaches that were strong recruiters and had relationships with former players ans recruits and that expressed strong interest in staying?

Oh, for sure. Pope's resume definitely proves that. 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Exactly. All these guys do is focus on the disastrous 25/26 season, it certainly was a disaster, but the 24/25 team, with a healthy Butler, Carr snd Robinson, gets to at least the Elite 8. Saying Pope is trash, is ridiculous and shows immaturity. There aren't too many coaches that can do what Pope did in year 1 with 0 players to start with and massive injuries. We were a 3 seed with some massive wins.
I know of none that would do what Pope did year 1. I’ve never seen any team by any coach just quit like that.

The hell with the injuries. That’s no excuse for quitting. Maybe you won’t win. But you can’t just quit. Pitino’s first team was undermanned every game. They lost 14 games. But they never quit. And UK fans loved them.

I was in MSG for the Ohio St game. I saw them quit. I was in Bridgestone for the Ok and Alabama games. We tried to give away the Ok game. Then just forfeited the Alabama game without officially calling it a forfeit.

All the signs for year 2 were evident year 1.

Year 1 just had a bunch of guys that had been coached elsewhere and had some foundation to fall back on.

There are no excuses for Pope. The dude is 20-16 in the SEC. The worst 2 year SEC record by any UK coach ever.

And his teams quit!! That can’t be said enough.

I’ll type slow so you can follow along. You are are too stupid to have basketball conversations with. If you think the year 1 team quit just because your little beetch arse was at a bad game, you’re pathetic.

No excuses for year 2. All on Pope. Year 1, sometimes things aren’t excuses but reasons. Anyone that’s not a whine tit can see that. Conflating years one and two is just a sign of ignorance.

and there’s not a doubt in my mind you weren’t in MSG.

2 seasons, 2 games.
One's tall. One's short.
One wears a hat. One doesn't.
One's a Mormon. One is presumably Catholic.
Is there a point to this rhetoric?
I'm off the Pope bandwagon, but I didn't come to that conclusion in just 2 games.
Because that would be frighteningly stupid.

This isn't even close. Stein was probably the best oc in major college football for the last few years at one of the most prestigious football programs in the US. He is a young, major up and comer.

No matter his ties to UK, we would've been thrilled to get him.

Pope was a hc for over 10 years. Never coached at a high level school. Never won an ncaa tournament game. Was about halfway through his career when hired.

But for his ties to UK, he would've never been even remotely considered for this job.
