But for all you Ebay sellers, I've never understood why a seller would begin an auction at a price below his reserve? If you're not willing to sell the golf cart for less than $X,XXX dollars, then why begin the bids below $X,XXX ? What good does that do? I see bids where the bidding has started but the reserve has not yet been met, and I can't help but wonder about it.

I do agree with you, just start the bidding at the minimum price you are willing to accept, then move on.

One reason is the competitive nature of Ebay. Once somebody starts bidding on a "good deal" it is hard sometimes for them to stop even when the price starts getting close to retail. Also,many buyers are more reluctant to bid on items that have a reserve price.

So.. the more bidders you can involved, the better chance you have of starting a bidding war.
