Some notes from UK/Wisky 2014

I just finished watching the game from last year (sorry Billionth, was going to watch tonight but was bored at work) and I hav a few observations.

We are significantly better on both ends of the court.Dakari was way too much physically for Kaminsky.Brust hit some big shots early to keep the game close.The lob was open all night.Polson, Hawkins, and Lee played quite a few minutes in the first half.Koenig played over his head and hurt us in the first half.Wisky was hitting shots from the outside.The refs helped Wisky quite a bit in the second half.Poythress' dunk on Dekker was NASTY! He made some big plays down the stretch.Aaron's 3 to win the game was one of only 2 that we hit for the game. The first 3 was our first bucket of the game. It was also the only 3 Aaron attempted for the game.

after watching that game, I actually felt better about the challenge we'll face from Wisconsin.

Clearly they are better than last year but we did rely heavily on Dakari and Lee (Young did score 7 of our first 9 points though).

Yeah. The biggest comfort for me was seeing how much better of we are all around this year.

The thing that Wisconsin needs to do to be competitive in this game is what ND did very well against us: beat our guards off the dribble (or via pick and roll) and force our big men to help at the rim. This puts our bigs out of position and allows an easy dish or offensive rebound put-back.

Fortunately, Wisc doesn't have the off-the-bounce talent of ND. Only a few guys have that ability. I look for WCS to quiet Dekker. I think a big key will be how we defend other guys with the ability to penetrate and kick. Koenig and (surprisingly) Dukan come to mind.

If we can keep the dribble penetration in check, I think our length limits their ability to take good/open shots. And I think that leads to a win.

I also watched and I think the Cats can win again but it sure as hell won't be easy. Wisconsin was almost perfect at the free throw line and they hit 8 three pointers. Poythress also came up big in that game and as someone else said Dakari played one of his best games. I know both teams are different but this one might go down to the last minute too. GO CATS!!!!

I think we are much better this year and Wisconsin is a little better. I think Kaminsky will be a bigger factor this year as he will be more aggresive. I watched the game again the other day and Poythress came up very big in the last 6 minutes of the game.

Wisconsin can attempt whatever they want on offense, unless they are going nuts from all over the field they aren't winning this game. Kentucky is a better offensive team than Arizona and Zona shredded them to pieces. It took Wisconsin an otherworldly shooting performance just to wrap up that win over Arizona in the final minute. If they manage to do that again then hats off to them, hard to imagine that happening against Kentucky's defense though.

One thing that I've noticed watching some Wisconsin replays:

Kaminsky tends to tip the ball to the perimeter about as often as he attempts a put-back on the offensive glass. If our guards are watching for that they should be able to get some steals and fast breaks.
