I’ve been having the same conversation with some friends. This doesn’t make sense based on how it’s currently being explained.

Possible explanation:
The current rules are that kids can get need/merit-based scholarships and not count, BUT if they receive ANY athletic scholarship, ALL of their other financial aid from the school counts towards the 11.7.

Your hypothesis nailed it. We’ve been awesome at spending the whole 11.7 on our worst students and aligning a crap ton of other stuff for guys that were good in the classroom. When Cohen quit making Polk’s excuses and spent a decade rounding up solutions. But this will help us even more imo...

Wow. I never knew that. I thought we could give someone 25% baseball and 75% acadmic and only count 25% against the 11.7. Cant imagine this helps us anymore than others

That's got to be the answer. And you're right about Polk. I honestly think he was subconsciously sabotaging us since the early 90s because he was more concerned about "fighting the NCAA injustice" than in winning games and championships.

Agree. I actually think it’s going to help the Vandys of the world the most. There’s a guy in Kendall’s thread that explains it well. When he said that Vandys current advantage was with elite poor players, I knew that he was knowledgeable.

At the end of the day this doesnt hurt Vandy. It helps them. But it may help schools like us with lower tuition get to a full ride easier now to match the Vandys of the world.

That's always been our advantage. Cheap school, so partial scholarships help us more than Vandy.

Vandy's scholarships will now go farther, and they'll be able to give out full rides. Hard to turn down.

Yeah but it was full needs based ride to vandy vs paying out of pocket anything to go to State. This allows more schools like us to get to full rides

Those needs-based rides only can go to poor kids though, which has always been their REAL advantage. Now, they will have the advantage so many people thought they had before (but so will we).

Sure but they already full their roster with tons of talent from kids who couldn't get full rides elsewhere. If we can now offer the same we are in better shape. Like is said it helps them but i think it helps the schools who previously had to find really smart kids to offer a full ride. Once you eliminate out of pocket costs to families things like facilities and atmosphere become important. There is a reason vandy sucks in basketball and football.
