El Salvador and Mexico start in about twenty minutes

The USMNT will be at worst in second place before their next match against Mexico in Cincinnati in November. The match after that for the USMNT is at Jamaica.

Looking ahead to next month’s matches—

Mexico will face #2 USA & #3 Canada both away.
Canada’s other match is at home versus Costa Rica while the US is away at Jamaica.
#4 Panama has the opportunity for 6 points against #7 El Salvador and #8 Honduras.
The remaining matches in November are El Salvador hosting Jamaica and Costa Rica hosting Honduras.

Canada is finally good. Some pretty good players and some decent players who play well together. They are confident and they remind me of the US teams when we had Donovan and Dempsey. Unless something changes, we'll scrape by and end up third, I suspect. That gets us to the WC where hopefully we can quit experimenting with lineups and have a group of guys who are used to playing with each other. We also have a bunch of young guys with little experience and maturity. Managers and experienced players in Europe don't put up with half-*** effort during matches. We don't have anyone yet keeping these youngsters constantly focused. I suppose that's GB's job but he doesn't impress me. Maybe Tyler Adams can become that guy. He's good, he always plays with effort and players respect him. Donovan and Deuce would chew out guys once in a while. They earned the right to do so.

Last night was 3 critical points that we had to have, but yet again, we're a mess in the defensive third. Gave up a cheap easy goal in the first minute and should have had a penalty called against us in the 2nd half (for once, poor CONCACAF refereeing worked for us instead of against us). Berhalter is a do-nothing figurehead coach who only got the job because his brother was an executive at US Soccer when he was hired. But you're right, the players under-perform too. We need someone like Donovan, Dempsey or Howard to chew some asses out. Those guys would have kicked Weston McKennie's *** a long time ago.

I feel like we end up qualifying for the World Cup, but not sure I love our chances of getting out of the group stage if/when we get there. That's over a year away so probably not much point in speculating, but I don't see the qualities in our current talent pool that made our best WC runs (2002, 2010, 2014) successful.

The World Cup team for the next one will be pretty solid. A lot of the best player right now are very young.

The key will be who do we hire to coach them after the 2022 World Cup. Barring a complete disaster, we'll qualify. But with the inexperience, lack of solid team leadership (Pulisic could kind of fill that role, but he's always injured), and a joke of a coach, it would take a miracle to get out of the group stage. But with a good coach and 4 more years experience for everyone, we should be a contender to go very deep in the knockout stage at home in 2026.

After this cycle they need to go out and get a homerun hire for coach. That would go a long long way because the talent will be there.

Technically, it's an own goal. The GK saved it onto the post, it bounced off the post and then off the GK into the goal. Many own goals are similar to this. Technically an own goal, but really the result of a good play by the offense and not a mistake by the defense.

Pep won't. He will go somewhere where they can win it with any competent coach. That's always been his MO. Klopp might, but I doubt it.

I just can’t see Klopp leaving Liverpool to come coach the USMNT.

Both Pep and Klopp have said they're leaving after their current contract is done. It's the highest of high pressure sports jobs and they've both been in their jobs much longer than the vast majority of managers last in one job. Both have said they'd like to move to a national team job after their current job, which makes sense because you don't have to deal with the day to day and week by week pressure, but still have some big goals you can achieve. The whole soccer world realizes what a huge market the USA is that is just beginning to be tapped. Yes, hiring one of them is a stretch goal, but it's not nearly as big a stretch as a couple of you think. Taking the USA to the semifinals (or even quarterfinals) of the biggest World Cup in history in the USA in 2026 would be huge for any manager. There will be good managers very interested in the USA job after this next World Cup.
