So who will be leaving?

There was a rumor that he was possibly going to hit the portal. I wouldn’t assume that someone who looked ok last year wouldn’t leave this year. Hope he stays but who knows.
Also hope Torres stays. Don’t know his ceiling but he’s young. Purdy and Smothers already have a ceiling that we have seen. Haarberg looked so so. I know he’s young too but a year older than Torres.
That would really suck with Ajay Allen. I’ll admit I didn’t watch the 8 plays he got or whatever last year, but after watching the spring game he looks like a Darren Sproles type back that knows how to read schemes and get North. 3-4 yards a carry in the B1G will setup our explosive players, if we have them.. I can see CT giving Malachi Coleman a lot of catches.

I know that will be the action followed but I still find it strange that in the era of all this NIL why the 85 scholarship limit still exists. You could just provide equal benefits (and more) to non-scholarship players with NIL. The roster limit could/would be just how many players the coaches want and can handle on a team.
The problem is that the rules don’t let you take a scholarship guy and convert him to walk on status.

The fact that NU is 13 over after a pre-culling of the scholarship roster before spring ball means there will be kids who leave that we would rather keep on the roster.

I feel like one or both Smothers or Purdy are fated to go. HH might stick around and either be the archetype developmental QB that only really ever spells the starter during his career, or across a position change while here since the coaches love his athleticism so much.

Probably at least one back will go as well as maybe a receiver or two. Don't see any linemen or tes leaving.

Hard to tell on defense... It seems we'll be playing lots of dudes at depth often, so why would any leave? Though it wouldn't surprise me to see an older guy or two leave who might feel passed over whether due to their performance in the past or injury (Henrich comes to mind).
Would Purdue be able to play immediately or would he have to sit since has transfered once and isn't eligible because he didn't transfer in thirty day period after coaching change?

Torres was recruiting in high school by our current OC when he was at SC

He may enter the portal, but most of the talk was because he was in a green jersey, then a yellow jersey. People were speculating that he was in those jerseys because he chose to be because he was entering the portal.
Benning this morning seemed to indicate that Ajay had some lingering effects in camp from his injury from last fall

maybe. A lot depends on their meetings this week. Rhule’s staff can be pretty convincing about their plan for a player. Satterfield I think has said he wants play 4 RBs. Is that enough to keep Ajay around? There’s going to have to be some attrition in the back end on defense. That’s a tough one because there’s a lot of talent there. The WR #s are too high too and more are on the way. The guys that are still here but leave after this spring I wish well because in many cases it won’t be because they didn’t want to be at NU.

Frost stupidly played his best RB and then Mickey stupidly did it again vs OU?
Yes now he thinks he's the best RB and he's sitting at 3rd or 4th string... And we wonder why he'd be looking at the portal... Again, you've got to be smarter with how you play freshmen, especially letting them start games. Their ego will blow up faster than their abilities.

In some ways I take all of this as a sign of hope. Yes, some non contributors will most likely leave. But as many have said, we are going to need to let go some guys who under normal conditions we would want to stay. But that means that the coaches think that the new guys they have coming in are better than the guys who will be leaving. And if many who are leaving are in fact good players then the coaches must think the new guys are even better. A good sign!

Remember when Bo couldn't even fill all his scholarships? Then there was Frost who would have multiple guys quit before they even had one practice.

We bitched about Bo and his unwillingness to more agressuvely manage the roster, but he at least didn’t have a problem winning 9-10 with his diminished numbers.

We should get an indicator of some names by next Monday I'd think (if not sooner) after the talks with the coaches. I'd think there would be an incentive for some of them to enter the portal early so they don't find themselves locked out by portal entries from other schools. It's cleaner to wait until after the semester ends but by then spots will be taken already.

One of the new players doesn't make grades

Brown was playing with the starters and Stenger showed out...I am skeptical on Gbayor too ... dont see Bretz, that burns bridges at Westside

I think Monday is when the portal closes, so we should see movement soon.

I'm sure you'll think it's hilarious once one of the better young running backs we've had hits the transfer portal. Once again, it was all preventable.

On a side note, the portal has been open 9 days and Colorado has had 28 players enter since April 15…. at last count… could be higher now

Yes, we can get talented players to stay longer by not playing them. You're a genius.
You're distorting the argument. Allen got playing time ahead of Ervin and Johnson last year, and now he's behind them. It's not common that a player, especially a talented young player, takes that news very well.

Allen was our best RB. Not playing your best player at a position is dumb.

Actually, it was hard to figure the depth chart out. The White offense was the ones (and 3s???) and the White defense was the twos (and 4s???). The Red offense was the twos (and 4s???) and the Red defense was the ones (and 3s???). In a couple cases a two was placed with the ones so they could see how he did with the first string (Grant and Haarburg). So the way I inferred the depth chart was Ervin and Grant were co #1s, Allen was #2 and Rahmir was #3. So I'm not sure Allen is behind Johnson, he might be in front of him. I inferred Haarburg entered the Spring Game as #2, but was on the white squad to get reps with them and Purdy was #3 and Torres #4.

Ahh. People forget we were on self-probation every year under Blo. If only he would have set up the recruiting department he was offered, after Eichorst tripled his recruiting budget after replacing Osborne.

He got playing time in part because the other two weren’t 100%.
