Hudspeth is an option guy like Mullen is...surprised he is going to coordinate the passing game...sounds to me like Mullen may be focusing on the running part of the gameplan with Hud calling plays on Saturday...then Mullen stepping in as needed

so, it will either go two ways:

A) Mullen does the run-game gameplanning, Hud does passing game....Hud calls plays and Mullen injects his wishes from time to time

OR

B) Mullen hires somebody else to do the run game game and then either he or Hud calls plays

I doubt we will actually have anybody called the actual OC...just run game and passing game coordinators

any kind of problem with Hudspeth moving from a HC position to one with less responsibility? And possibly being under an OC who may have overall less experience? If Hudspeth is a team guy, it may not be a problem. Also, in Mullen's scheme, maybe the "passing coordinator" at State is one of the more important coaching positions. God knows, we haven't had much coordination in that phase of the game in one helluva long time.

Passing game coordinator means he will be implementing the passing game each week in the gameplan...thats a pretty damn important position in any offense...also, I like it being done that way because that means all he will do is look at ways of attacking the opposing defense through the passing game, while the other guy does the running game...you get two people focusing on offense rather than one, and more time will be able to be spent breaking down film, looking for weaknesses, and tendencies. The down side of that is if the two arent on the same page about how they want to attack a D</p>

If he does a good job with it, and it is critical in the scheme, then he should be ready to move up, and things won't get screwed up organizationally.

Hudspeth knows, unlike some of you posters who were touting him for OC or even head coach, that going from Div. II head coach to WR coach/passing game coordinator at an SEC school is a HUGE promotion. He's going to work his *** off and learn all he can from Mullen and be fine.

Im guessing that with the hands on approach that Mullen has already said he wants to have, he will be the man in charge, and when he has to do his head coaching duties that take him away from doing his offensive stuff, Hudspeth will take over the play calling. Hudspeth will concentrate on the passing and receiving aspect while Mullen worries with the whole body of work. I see Mullen being the man with the plan on offense, and Hudspeth kinda learning the reigns until Mullen feels he has taught Hudspeth how he wants the offense run. Give it a couple of years and Mullen will be more hands off and Hudspeth will be the guy calling the plays. I kinda like Mullen calling the plays. He is an offensive genius. Not too worried about him and his in game head coaching duties if our coordinators and coaches do their jobs better then the ones did under Croom.

Exactly. This is a smooth move by Byrne and Mullen. Basically Byrne was able to hire 2 of his HC candidates (Hudspeth of course being the "Oh **** no one wants this job" candidate). Mullen is the HC, and now we get to see how Hudspeth performs in the SEC. If Mullen is successful, then he will most likely be moving on and Hudspeth will be there to fill the void. Furthermore if it turns out Hudspeth is a **** *** coach at this level, then State can move on and just hire another coach in Hudspeth's place. I think this was a hire done with some seriously long-term planning in mind. I like it and my faith in Byrne grows even more.
