So what if I came up with $20M?

Just saying, what if I can get someone to cut a check for $20M tomorrow, would they even use it for a practice facility or to upgrade the RAC? It sounds like they want to improve classrooms and fix the problems with UMDNJ with the money that they get before they do anything with the basketball facility.

You know you can direct your donation to whatever cause you like at RU and they have to use those funds towards that cause. If you wanted 20M to go to a basketball practice facility, just direct it there and that's exactly where it would go

If you say we are building a practice facility and here is $20mil I think their next question would be how do you want your name to appear on it? You can specify any donation and especially large ones. You may put them in a corner if that isn't enough money to do the whole project or they may delay building it for a short period of time to get the rest of the money, but money usually spurs more money. If somebody with $20mil for it thinks it's a good idea then people who would give in the thousands will get on board. That's how it works at NU 90% of the time. get the big check and people will join in.

you would specify its for the practice facility only and they will use it for that purpose...you always have a good shot at having naming rights

Thats good to know. Because I have an outside-of-the-box idea that I may pursue to get a big check.

Go for it Seels. And I'm sure Julie would take that check from you directly. As long as it don't bounce.

If you take a step back as a Rutgers student who doesnt care about basketball (29700 out of 300000). You are in Hardenberg (one of the river dorms?) taking a class with cock roaches passing under your feet and new money is going for the benefit of 12 people who have lost 13 straight in a program that hasn't accomplished much in 21 years.

I get that the practice facility is a very important ingredient towards long term success, but there shouldn't be outrage that nobody is doing anything about it. There are so many more important things to Rutgers University. As i said before, do all gyms at RU have AEDs and staff that no how to use them?

That is one of the good things of project specific giving. If you are giving $20 million for a practice facility, that is what it would be used on, full stop. No one else has a say.

Think back to the $5 million that was donated for the recruiting lounge. No way would that have been built with school money, but when the donors made a specific gift for it, it was getting done no ifs ands or butts. If you recall there was plenty of hemming and hawing on this board and even a few articles in the local press, but when a specific gift is donated it will get used as directed.
